Down fire subwoofer boxes mount the driver on the bottom baffle so it fires into the vehicle floor rather than rearward into the cabin. That downfire subwoofer box layout uses the floor to load the cone for broader bass in the cabin while protecting the driver from cargo and foot traffic, which is why it fits so many truck, SUV, hatchback and cargo-area installs.

Why Down-Firing

Down-firing does two things a rearward-firing box cannot. It puts the vehicle floor directly in front of the cone, which loads the driver and spreads bass more evenly through the cabin instead of arriving from one point in the trunk. And it puts the cone face down, where cargo, boots and dog crates cannot reach it.

The tradeoff is that the orientation has to be designed in. The baffle sits on the bottom face, the terminal cup moves to a side wall, the internal wiring routes to match, and the cabinet needs feet to hold the cone clear of the floor. A front-firing box turned upside down is not a down-firing box.

Down fire vs rear fire vs side fire

Rear-firing aims the cone at the trunk. Side-firing aims into a wheel well, and mostly exists because it fits where nothing else will. Down-firing aims at the floor, the one surface every vehicle has in the same place. What changes at the seat is direction, not output. The floor redistributes what the driver already produces. What the orientation asks of the install

Two objections get raised about down-firing and both are fair. The first is mechanical. A driver at full excursion pushes back on the cabinet with the same force it uses to move air, and a down-firing cabinet routes that reaction into the floor through four feet instead of into a trunk wall. On a bare plastic cargo floor an unsecured box will buzz, and it will walk. Strap it to the cargo tie-downs. If the floor pan itself is what resonates, that is a floor pan problem and no enclosure fixes it.

The second is carpet. That concern comes from home audio, where a cabinet sits on short spikes and deep household pile genuinely chokes the gap. Automotive carpet and trunk liner are a fraction of that depth, and the ABS feet here set 1.75 inches, so factory carpet does not restrict it. What matters is that all four feet land on something solid and level. Half on a folded seat back and half on the floor is the real failure case.

When Down-Firing Is the Right Choice

Cargo-bay installs

SUV and hatchback builds where the box lives in the cargo area and things get stacked on top of it. This is the case down-firing exists for.

Under-seat installs

Trucks and SUVs with usable under-seat space. The driver fires through the gap between the cabinet base and the floor, with the seat structure clearing the top.

Open cabins

Jeeps, Broncos and older SUVs where the cargo area opens straight into the passenger compartment and there is no closed trunk to load the back wave.

Stealth builds

From above a down-firing cabinet reads as a flat bench. No visible cone, no visible baffle.

The Lineup at a Glance

Universal cutout, $169 to $180. Two boxes, single 10 and single 12, cut to a standard cutout and volume range rather than one driver. Pick these when the driver is undecided or already in hand and not on the matched list.

Driver-matched singles, $220 to $260. The bulk of the range. Internal volume and cutout cut to one driver's published parameters, across Alpine, Arc Audio, Diamond Audio, Focal, Hertz, JL Audio, Kicker, Morel, Prodigy, ResoNix, Rockford Fosgate and Wavtech. These are Performance Optimized Series builds. Micro Series cabinets sit alongside them, cut shallower for tight floor-to-seat clearance, and every Micro ships with feet so it runs down fire or forward fire.

Driver-matched duals, $270 to $300. Same construction, two drivers, isolated chambers. Sealed alignment means one individual chamber per driver, and the quoted volume is per chamber, not the total.

Larger and vehicle-specific, $330 to $500. A triple 10 for Wavtech thinPRO10, 15 inch builds in both Micro and Performance Optimized including a dual 15, a Performance Optimized cabinet for the ResoNix GUS-15 and and the direct-fit Bronco Edition dual 12. The Bronco cabinet runs isolated chambers, one per driver, the same as every other sealed build here.

How These Are Built

Every cabinet is cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 48.5 lb/ft³ density and 200 psi internal bond, on ShopSabre routers in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Joinery follows the series. Performance and Performance Optimized builds use V-groove and dado joints that mechanically interlock at each panel intersection before bonding. The Professional Series 15 inch build adds a double-layer baffle and threaded inserts matched to the driver's bolt pattern. The Vehicle Specific Bronco enclosure is stack-fab with dowel reinforcement, which is how every Vehicle Specific cabinet is built.

Sealed builds ship with polyfill sized to the cabinet volume. Wiring is 12 gauge OFC, pre-run and landed at the Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite terminal cup with copper ring terminals. ABS feet are included and are not optional: they hold the cabinet 1.75 inches off the floor, and that gap is the clearance the cone needs to move without contacting the surface below.

Finishes are grey trunkliner or black plush carpet.

Frequently Asked Down Fire Questions

What's the advantage of a down-firing enclosure?

Two things. The vehicle floor acts as a boundary that loads the driver and spreads bass more evenly through the cabin, so the output is less directional than a box firing into a trunk. And the cone faces down, protected from cargo, foot traffic and impact. For a cargo area that gets used daily, down-firing is usually the more practical orientation.

Can I just flip a regular subwoofer enclosure upside down?

No. The cabinet needs feet to hold the cone clear of the floor, 1.75 inches of it here, the terminal cup has to sit on a side wall instead of the back, and the wiring has to route to match. A front-firing box inverted puts the cone on the carpet and the terminals against the floor. These cabinets are built for the orientation from the first cut.

Will a down-firing enclosure work in any vehicle?

It needs a reasonably flat surface to sit on. SUVs, hatchbacks, and trucks with cargo bays or behind-seat floor space are the typical applications, and carpeted sedan trunks work fine. It is the wrong choice for irregular surfaces, deep wheel-well intrusions, or anywhere the enclosure has to mount to a vertical wall.

How much clearance do I need below the enclosure?

The included ABS feet set it at 1.75 inches and you do not need to add anything further. The driver fires through that gap. Factory carpet and trunk liner do not restrict it, because automotive pile is far shallower than the deep household carpet that causes clearance trouble for home theater subwoofers sitting on short spikes. What does matter is that all four feet land on a solid, level surface.

What's the difference between down-firing and a regular sealed enclosure?

Both are sealed alignments and the cabinet construction is the same. What changes is orientation. A rear-firing sealed box creates a directional source pointed at the cabin. A down-firing sealed box uses the floor to redistribute that output, which reads as less directional from the listening position.

What size amplifier do I need?

The driver sets it, not the orientation. Match the amplifier's RMS output at your final wired impedance to the driver's RMS rating, and check the impedance math before you buy: two 2-ohm drivers in parallel present 1 ohm, two 4-ohm drivers in parallel present 2 ohms, and two 2-ohm drivers in series present 4 ohms. A monoblock rated at the driver's RMS at that impedance is the standard approach.

The two universal-cutout boxes fit a standard cutout and volume range if your driver is not on the matched list. Enclosures are sold empty unless the listing says loaded.
