Angled Rear, Vertical Baffle

A wedge enclosure is cut so the back of the cabinet slopes away at 20 degrees while the front stays upright. It tucks against a seat back or a rear wall and recovers the triangle of space a square box wastes, without asking the driver to fire at an angle. The line runs sealed and ported side by side, and the enclosure type filter splits them.

Every cabinet here is CNC-cut in Tullahoma, Tennessee from Langboard Elite MDF on our own ShopSabre routers, to the published parameters of the driver it is built for. We run the machines.

Wedge Series Comparison

A wedge is a cabinet shape, so the same taper appears at two build standards and in both alignments. Baffle thickness and joinery differ because the cabinets are made differently, not because one is a better version of another.

The Baffle Is Vertical. The Taper Is on the Back.

This is the part most wedge boxes get wrong, and it is the whole reason to buy ours. On a Proline X wedge the front baffle stands upright and square to the listener. The angle is cut into the rear panel, where it does the fitment work without touching the acoustics.

An angled-baffle box does the opposite. It tips the driver back so the cone aims at the headliner, which changes where the output goes and how the cabinet couples to the cabin. That may be what you want, but it is a different product and it should be a decision rather than a side effect of the shape.

Keeping the baffle vertical also keeps the mounting geometry honest. The cutout, the depth behind it and the clearance the driver needs are all measured square, the way the driver manufacturer published them.

How to Choose a Wedge Enclosure

Start from the driver

Every cabinet here is cut to one driver's published parameters. Pick the driver first and the enclosure follows. The brand filter shows every driver line we cut this shape for.

Sealed or ported

Sealed is the smaller cabinet for the same driver and the more damped low end. Ported gives more output around its tuning frequency from a deeper box. If the space behind the seat is tight, the sealed wedge usually wins on fit alone. If the cabinet has room for the extra depth and output per watt matters more than the last word in accuracy, look at the ported build for your driver. The comparison further down sets the two against each other.

Decide what the taper is for

A wedge earns its keep when it is going against something angled: a seat back, a rear wall, a hatch. Against a flat bulkhead a square box gives you the same volume in less depth, and the taper buys you nothing.

Match the series to the build

Performance Optimized for a double-baffle cabinet cut to one driver, sealed or ported, which is most of the line. Performance for a single-baffle sealed cabinet at the lowest entry point.

Count the drivers before the inches

Most of these are singles, with duals through the middle of the range and a triple at the top, and the multi-driver builds are sealed. A dual wedge is not two single wedges: the chambers share the taper, so each one is cut to a volume the single version does not use.

Do not shop on volume alone

A published net volume only means something against the driver the cabinet was cut for. The same driver gets a different volume as a single than it does as a dual, and a ported build gets a different volume again. That is deliberate.

Measuring for a Wedge

A wedge is bought on three numbers, and the taper means two of them are not what people expect.

Both depths, not one

A wedge has a deep edge and a shallow edge. The deep edge is what has to clear whatever sits behind the cabinet; the shallow edge is what determines how far the box intrudes at the top. A single depth figure tells you nothing about a tapered cabinet, so measure the space at both heights.

The seat angle you actually have

Seat backs are not all raked the same, and a folding seat changes angle through its travel. Measure with the seat in the position it will live in, not upright, and remember that a seat which reclines will close the gap you just measured.

Width at the widest point

Wheel wells narrow a trunk as you move back. A wedge that fits at the opening can foul at the rear, so take the width where the cabinet will finally sit rather than where it goes in.

Two Series, Two Alignments, One Shape

A wedge is a cabinet shape rather than a series, so the taper turns up at more than one build standard. Performance Optimized is the bulk of the line, each cabinet cut to a single driver on a double 1.5 inch front baffle, and it is where every ported wedge lives. Performance is the smaller group, on a single 3/4 inch baffle with V-groove and dado joinery, and it is where the line starts.

Sealed and ported sit side by side. Every sealed cabinet ships with polyfill already installed. The ported wedges carry a slot port in the bottom rear corner, tuned to the driver, and are single-driver builds; the duals and the triple are sealed. Sizes run from 8 inch through 18.

Wedge Subwoofer Box Questions

What is a wedge subwoofer box?

A wedge subwoofer box is an enclosure cut so the rear panel slopes while the front baffle stays upright. The taper lets the cabinet sit flush against a seat back or a rear wall and recovers space a square box would waste, while the driver continues to fire straight ahead rather than at an angle.

Does a wedge box angle the subwoofer?

Not on these. The front baffle is vertical and square to the listener; the angle is cut into the back of the cabinet. A box that tips the baffle back is an angled-baffle enclosure, which aims the cone toward the headliner. That is a different product with different behaviour, and it should be chosen deliberately rather than inherited from the shape.

Does the wedge shape hurt sound quality?

No. The internal volume is cut to the driver's published alignment the same way a square cabinet would be, and non-parallel walls arguably help by breaking up internal standing waves. What matters acoustically is the net volume, the bracing and the seal, and the taper changes none of them.

How do I measure for a wedge enclosure?

Take both depths, not one. A wedge has a deep edge and a shallow edge, and a single depth figure tells you nothing about a tapered cabinet. Measure the seat at the angle it will actually sit at, and take the width where the box will finally rest rather than at the trunk opening, because wheel wells narrow the space toward the back.

Are these sealed or ported?

On a ported wedge the slot port sits in the bottom rear corner, where the floor meets the raked back panel; it runs the full width of the cabinet, exits through the side, and is sized to the driver with the air speed held under 17 meters per second so it does not chuff at full excursion. Ported wedges are single-driver builds; the duals and the triple are sealed.

Do you sell the subwoofers too?

For some brands, not all. Several of the driver brands on this page are ones we are not a dealer for; we cut the cabinet to the published parameters and you source the driver yourself. Where we do stock the driver you will find it linked from the product page.
