Most people start this decision at the wrong end. They pick a driver size, then go looking for a box. The constraint that actually decides it is the gap between your floor and your seat, and the mounting depth of the driver you want to put in there.
Get those two right and the rest follows. Get them wrong and you end up with a box that will not close, or a driver that bottoms against the baffle. Here is how the four live configurations differ, and how to read the volume figures without getting caught out.

What actually limits which down-fire box fits?
Mounting depth, then cabinet height. In that order. Our universal P12-S DF takes a driver up to 6 inches deep, which covers a good number of 12s and rules out a lot of high-excursion ones. Check your driver's published mounting depth before anything else.
Cabinet height is the second gate, and down-fire builds are unusual here because the cabinet has to clear the seat above it and hold the cone off the floor below it. The P12-S DF is 6.75 inches tall on its own and 8.5 inches with the feet installed. That 1.75 inch difference is the clearance the cone needs.
So the arithmetic is simple. Measure floor to seat, subtract 8.5 inches, and see what you have left. If the answer is negative, you are looking at a 10 rather than a 12, or a shallow driver, or both.
Is the quoted volume per driver or the total?
Per chamber. Sealed builds use isolated chambers, one per driver, separated by a full 3/4 inch MDF divider. When we list a dual at 0.75 cubic feet, each driver gets 0.75 and the cabinet holds 1.50 total.
This is the single most common misreading in the category, and it goes both ways. Some competitor listings quote the total and let you assume it is per driver, which makes the box look bigger than it performs. Others quote per driver without saying so, which makes it look smaller.
The ResoNix GUS-12 dual is a clean worked example. Two fully separate chambers at 0.75 cubic feet each, 1.50 total, one shared terminal cup mounted on the side wall, 30 inches wide by 15 deep by 9.875 tall measured in the down-fire position.
Two 10s or one 12?
Think in displacement per inch of cabinet height, not in driver diameter. A 12 needs a bigger cutout and usually more mounting depth than a 10, and in a down-fire build both of those come straight out of the height you do not have.
Two 10s spread the same displacement across a wider, shorter cabinet. A dual 10 at 0.50 per chamber holds 1.00 cubic foot of air in a box that can sit lower than a single 12 wanting 1.25 on its own. If your floor-to-seat gap is the binding constraint, that is usually the answer.
The other direction holds too. If you have the height and the width is tight, one 12 in a compact footprint beats trying to fit two 10s side by side. Measure the space you actually have before deciding which problem you are solving.
What does the second driver actually buy you?
Displacement and thermal headroom, paid for in footprint, weight, current draw and wiring complexity. Our universal single 12 weighs 27 pounds empty. The ResoNix GUS-12 dual is 36 pounds before either driver goes in.
Wiring is where people get caught. Two dual 2 ohm drivers wired in parallel present 1 ohm. Two dual 4 ohm drivers in parallel present 2 ohms. Two dual 2 ohm drivers in series present 4 ohms. Work out what your amplifier is stable at before you order the drivers, not after.
Current draw scales with the load. Dropping from 2 ohms to 1 ohm roughly doubles what the amplifier pulls from the electrical system, and a stock alternator and battery may not have it to give. Our guide to choosing an amplifier for a subwoofer covers matching power to the load properly.
Universal cutout or driver-matched?
Driver-matched if your subwoofer is on the list, universal if it is not. The difference is real and it shows up in the baffle.
A driver-matched build is cut to one subwoofer's published parameters. The volume is set to its sealed alignment, the cutout is machined for its frame, and the baffle is a 1.5 inch double layer. These are Performance Optimized Series builds.
A universal box is cut to a standard cutout and volume range instead. The P10-S DF is 0.60 cubic feet and the P12-S DF is 1.00, with a 3/4 inch single baffle that ships as a solid mounting flange. There are no threaded inserts, because we do not know which subwoofer is going in and cannot machine a bolt pattern for a driver we have never seen. You drill your own.
