A down-firing box points the cone at the floor. That is the whole idea, and it is also where most of the argument starts. One camp says the floor loads the driver and gives you free output. The other says the carpet chokes it and the box rattles around the trunk. Neither is right.

What does a down-firing subwoofer actually do?
It puts the vehicle floor 1.75 inches in front of the cone. At that distance the floor behaves as a boundary rather than a distant reflector, and bass arrives off the whole floor pan instead of one corner of the cargo area.
That is a change in direction and distribution. It is not a change in output. The floor does not add power, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something. What it does is spread the same energy the driver already produces across a much larger radiating surface before it reaches your seat.
The second thing it does is mechanical. The cone faces down, where cargo, boots, and dog crates cannot reach it. On a build that lives in an SUV cargo bay, that alone is often the reason to do it.
If the complaint about your current system is that you can point at the box with your eyes shut, orientation is the variable worth changing. A rear-firing sub in a hatchback announces its own location. A down-firing one usually does not.
How do rear, side, and up-firing compare?
Three of the four orientations aim the cone at a surface that changes with the vehicle. Only down-firing aims at one that does not. Every car has a floor, and it is always in the same place relative to the cargo area.
Rear-firing aims the cone at the trunk or the hatch. The back wave loads against a closed trunk, and the sound arrives at your seat as a fairly directional source. In a sedan with a sealed trunk this is still the default for good reason.
Side-firing aims into a wheel well or a quarter panel. We will be honest about this one: it mostly exists because it fits where nothing else will. It is a packaging solution first and an acoustic choice second.
Up-firing comes up often enough that it is worth addressing. In home audio it has a purpose. In a car it is rare, and when it happens it is usually because the cargo floor left no other option. The headliner is further away and less consistent than the floor pan.
Down-firing takes the one surface that is always there, always close, and always the same distance away. That consistency is the argument for it, not raw output.
Can I just flip my current box upside down?
No. Four things have to change for a cabinet to work down-firing, and flipping a front-firing box addresses none of them.
The baffle has to sit on the bottom face. The terminal cup has to move to a side wall. The internal wiring has to route to match. And the cabinet needs feet to hold the cone clear of the floor.
Flip a standard box and you get the opposite of all four. The terminal cup ends up face down against the carpet with your speaker wire crushed underneath it. The cone sits flat on the floor with zero clearance, which means zero air path. The box will play, badly, until something gives.
This is the part most of the internet skips. Orientation is not a mounting decision you make in the driveway. It is a design decision that gets made on the router.
You can see it on the baffle itself. The cutout is a solid mounting flange with the internal wiring already run to it, landed where a down-firing cabinet needs it rather than where a front-firing one would.
What does down-firing ask of your install?
Two objections get raised about down-firing and both are fair. The first is mechanical. A driver at full excursion pushes back on the cabinet with the same force it uses to move air, and a down-firing cabinet routes that reaction into the floor through four feet instead of into a trunk wall.
On a bare plastic cargo floor, an unsecured box will buzz and it will walk. Strap it to the cargo tie-downs. If the floor pan itself is what resonates, that is a floor pan problem and no enclosure fixes it.
The second objection is carpet, and it comes from home audio. There, a cabinet sits on short spikes and deep household pile genuinely chokes the gap. Automotive carpet and trunk liner are a fraction of that depth. At 1.75 inches, factory carpet does not restrict it.
What does restrict it is a spare tire, a toolbox, or a folded moving blanket pressed up against the opening. Keep the gap clear and make sure all four feet land on something solid and level. Half on a folded seat back and half on the floor is the real failure case, and it turns the cabinet into a lever.

When should you pick each orientation?

The open-cabin case deserves a note. In a Jeep or a Bronco there is no closed trunk to load the back wave, so a rear-firing box is firing into an open volume that keeps going. Down-firing gives it a surface to work against.
Stealth is the other quiet reason people land here. From above, a down-firing cabinet reads as a flat bench. No visible cone, no visible baffle, nothing that says there is a subwoofer in the vehicle.
Orientation is not the same decision as sealed or ported
Which way the cone points and how the box is loaded are two independent choices. Sealed down-fire builds use isolated chambers, one per driver, with the quoted volume given per chamber rather than as a total, and every one ships with polyfill sized to the cabinet.
That is a decision about alignment, not about orientation. You can build a ported box that fires down and a sealed box that fires rearward. Settle the alignment first. Then settle the orientation. Doing it in that order stops you from talking yourself into a box shape that fights the response you actually wanted.
Which one should you build?
If cargo stacks on your box, or your cargo area opens into the cabin, down-firing is worth the change. If you have a closed sedan trunk and nothing lands on top of the enclosure, a rear-firing sealed box is doing its job and there is nothing to fix.
