INSTALLER'S TAKE

The SCX122 is the better of the two SCX drivers acoustically, and by a clear margin. Free-air resonance is 32.1 Hz against the 10's 38.8, and Vas is 43 liters against 23. That combination puts this cabinet's F3 at 37.1 Hz where the 10 lands at 46.4. Nearly ten hertz for one and three eighths inches of additional cabinet height.

Unlike the 10, this cabinet is governed by volume rather than by driver clearance. The SCX122 mounts in 5.57 inches, but 1.20 net requires 6 inches of internal height, so there is over an inch of headroom above the motor without needing the magnet relief. Fitment is not the constraint here.

On volume: Morel recommends 1.3 net and we build 1.20. The difference is deliberate. 1.3 would push the cabinet half an inch taller for roughly half a hertz of extension, which is not a trade worth making on a down fire box. Qtc moves from about 1.02 at their figure to 1.049 at ours, a difference you will not hear.

Qts is 0.7, so Qtc cannot fall below 0.7 in any sealed box regardless of size. At 1.049 you are just above unity with a modest lift near the corner. That is the driver's character and Morel designed their recommendation around it.

The 130mm voice coil is the same one Morel uses across the Ultimo range, and on a 12 it is a serious piece of hardware. 500 watts RMS continuous with 1500 watts of transient headroom. Multi-layer paper and carbon fiber cone on a Hexatech aluminium former, double ferrite vented motor.

Morel's published numbers reconcile with their own T/S data within about a hertz, which is better than most manuals in this category manage.

Built Around the Morel SCX122

Nothing about this cabinet is generic. The baffle is bored to the SCX122's 264mm cutout, and the internal height is set by the driver's 5.57 inch mounting depth plus the airspace the alignment calls for. The finished cabinet stands 8.25 inches on the same 30 by 15 inch footprint used across the Down Fire line.

The SCX122 is a dual voice coil driver rated 500 watts RMS with 1500 watts maximum transient handling. Multi-layer paper and carbon fiber cone on a Hexatech aluminium former, double ferrite vented motor, and 430 cm² of cone area. The 130mm, or 5.1 inch, voice coil is the same diameter Morel uses across the Ultimo range, and on a 12 it is serious hardware. It is the reason the driver carries 500 watts continuously with that much transient headroom.

What gives this enclosure its reach is the driver's 32.1 Hz free air resonance paired with a 43 liter Vas. At 1.20 cubic feet net the system lands at Qtc 1.049 with a predicted F3 of 37.1 Hz, computed from Morel's published Thiele-Small parameters. With a free air Qts of 0.7, system Qtc cannot fall below 0.7 in any sealed enclosure regardless of volume, so this alignment sits just above unity with a modest lift near the corner frequency. That is the SCX122's character, not a limitation of the cabinet, and Morel's own recommendation places it in the same territory.

Net Volume, Not Gross

Gross internal volume is 1.29 cubic feet. We publish 1.20 cubic feet net, the figure that remains after panel thickness, perimeter bracing and the driver's own intrusion into the airspace are accounted for.

True net, not marketing net. Internal volume is calculated from the machined cavity dimensions and the driver's published displacement, not estimated from external dimensions minus wall thickness.

Morel recommends 1.3 net and publishes an F3 of 38 Hz there. Running their own Qts of 0.7 and Vas of 43 liters through standard sealed box math at that volume lands within about a hertz of their figure, so their enclosure table and their Thiele-Small data agree with each other. That is not universal in this category.

We build at 1.20 rather than 1.30 on purpose. The last tenth of a cubic foot costs half an inch of cabinet height and buys roughly half a hertz of extension, moving Qtc from about 1.02 to 1.049. On a down fire enclosure where the whole point is keeping the cabinet low, that is not a trade worth making.

Volume Sets This Cabinet, Not Clearance

Unlike the 10 inch SCX cabinet, this one is governed by airspace rather than by driver fitment. The SCX122 mounts in 5.57 inches while 1.20 net requires 6 inches of internal height, so there is over an inch of headroom above the motor and no magnet relief is needed. The double baffle still does its work: the outer 3/4 inch layer is machined as a flush recess and the driver bolts to the inner layer, which matters with a 10.4 inch cutout in a cabinet this size.

Down Fire Construction

Cut with V-groove and dado joinery on our ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF, a dense 48.5 lb/ft³ board with a 200 psi internal bond and 410,000 psi MOE. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square on Down Fire cabinets.

The driver fires down into the floor. The sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain below 60 Hz, so in car response extends well below the anechoic figure.

Double Baffle, Flush Recess

The front baffle is 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That recovers 3/4 inch of internal clearance.

Side-Mounted Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite cup with stainless hardware and copper ring terminals, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Side mounted so it stays accessible with the baffle facing the floor.

Perimeter Cross-Brace

A perimeter cross-brace ties the long walls of the 30 inch span together, and polyfill is pre-installed. The driver lands on 8/32 threaded inserts with stainless machine screws included.

Power and Warranty

Morel rates the SCX122 at 500 watts RMS and 1500 watts maximum transient. We recommend 300 to 600 watts RMS into this enclosure, which is Morel's own rated range. The driver is dual voice coil, so you set final impedance at the driver per Morel's wiring diagrams. The enclosure carries one side mounted terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC.

The enclosure carries a 1 year limited warranty. Bring your own Morel Ultimo SCX122; the driver is purchased separately.

Cut for the Driver, Not the Catalog

Every Performance Optimized cabinet is machined for one driver, from that driver's published cutout, mounting depth and Thiele-Small parameters, and built one at a time in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements — and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
