Image Dynamics ID Series Subwoofers
The top of the ID Series. Maximum cone area, 497.60 cm2, in the same hand-built construction platform: Parabolic Santoprene surround, Poly/Mica cone, BASV former, 250 watts RMS continuous. The D2 variant produces one of the flattest sealed alignments in the ID family.
The Image Dynamics ID12 V.4 brings the full ID Series construction to a 12 inch cone with 497.60 cm2 of piston area. More air movement at the same excursion, deeper extension in a properly sized box, and the capacity to fill larger vehicle cabins where a 10 inch driver runs out of displacement before it runs out of power. The ID12 handles 250 watts RMS continuous, the same as the ID10, but with the added advantage of a larger cone doing the work.
The 2.0 inch BASV former and 127 ounce Extended Y-35 motor are the same specification as the ID10, scaled to drive a heavier 12 inch assembly. The Mms runs higher at 207.8 grams (D2), which shifts the Fs up to 45 Hz. This is the key difference from the ID8 and ID10: the ID12's higher Fs produces a distinctly different sealed alignment character, particularly in the D2 variant.
The ID8 and ID10 run high Qtc in sealed enclosures, producing the punchy, midbass-forward character that makes them impactful in daily use systems. The ID12 D2 behaves differently. With a Qts of 0.628 and Fs of 45 Hz, the D2 at 1.25 cubic feet produces a Qtc of 0.797, near-Butterworth, which means a flatter, more controlled response with better transient accuracy. This is a genuinely different tuning philosophy from the rest of the ID Series, and it makes the ID12 D2 the most accurate sealed alignment in the lineup.
The D4 variant runs closer to the ID10 character, with Qtc from 0.99 to 1.14 across the sealed range, producing more midbass presence and punch. The choice between D2 and D4 here is also a choice between two meaningfully different sounds, not just two impedance options.
Image Dynamics recommends sealed for optimal sound quality, but the ID12 ported specifications are where the driver's low Fs advantage disappears and the large cone area takes over. The Audiophile 2.0 cubic foot ported alignment tuned to 30 Hz produces F3 at 26 Hz. That is exceptional for a 12 inch driver in a box that fits in most trunk builds, and it is the reason the ID Series has been competitive in sound quality events where low bass extension is scored.
Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 5.67 inches, cutout 11.0 inches, outside diameter 12.25 inches, driver displacement 0.122 cubic feet. Sealed volumes are net internal per Image Dynamics specifications. Ported enclosure volumes include port volume per the manual.
The ID12 D2 (Qts 0.628) and D4 (Qts 0.787) produce noticeably different sealed alignments at the same box volume. The D2 is the accurate, controlled option that approaches Butterworth in the Universal and Audiophile volumes. The D4 is the punchier, fuller-sounding option with more midbass presence. Match the impedance to your amplifier, but understand you are also choosing a sonic character.

Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff for each sealed volume. Volumes are net internal (including driver displacement), per the ID Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.
The ID12 has a higher Fs (45 Hz) than the ID8 and ID10 (31-32 Hz), which shifts the sealed alignment upward. The D2 lands near Butterworth across the full sealed range (Qtc 0.77 to 0.88), producing a controlled, accurate bass response with minimal midbass lift. The D4 runs higher (Qtc 0.99 to 1.14), closer to the punchy character of the ID10. This makes the D2 the better choice for sound quality applications and the D4 for listeners who prefer more midbass impact.

Power handling and ported options: Sealed enclosure power handling decreases as volume increases: 450W at 0.80 cu ft, 350W at 1.25 cu ft, 250W at 1.50 cu ft. For ported applications, the ID12 reaches F3 as low as 26 Hz in the Audiophile 2.0 cu ft alignment tuned to 30 Hz. Ported port dimensions are in the ID Series V.4 manual.
