INSTALLER'S TAKE

16.8mm of Xmax on a shallow 10. That number stops me every time I read it. Most shallow 10s in this program run 8 to 13mm. Hertz got nearly 17 out of a driver that mounts in 3.25 inches, and paired it with 500 watts RMS. That is a lot of displacement capability from a thin package.

At 0.51 net, which is Hertz's own recommendation, the S2 lands at Qtc 0.673 and the S4 at 0.754. Both are clean, controlled alignments. This driver is not fighting you the way the high-Qts shallows do.

Here is the thing to get right on coil choice, because it is backwards from what you would guess. On the MPS 250 the S2 is the better damped driver at Qts 0.41, against the S4 at 0.48. On the 12 inch MPS 300 that flips completely - there the S4 is tighter at 0.42 against the S2 at 0.51. Same series, opposite pattern. Do not assume it carries across sizes.

Worth saying after a run of manuals that did not check out: Hertz's numbers reconcile. Run their published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math at their recommended volume and you land within 0.03 of the Qtc they print. Rockford, Arc and Diamond all needed a correction note on their pages. Hertz did not. That earns some trust in the rest of their data.

At 4.9375 inches this is the second shortest cabinet we build, behind only the Alpine RS-W 10. If your under-seat measurement is tight, this and the Alpine are the two to look at.

Single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by which model you buy. No wiring decision at the driver. Target 400 to 500 watts RMS.

Performance, Performance Optimized, and Micro

Proline X builds three tiers of Down Fire enclosure. The difference is not finish or materials, it is whether the cabinet was designed for a category or for a driver, and how much of the fitting work is already done for you.

Feet ship with every tier, uninstalled on purpose. Mount them where your floor wants them for a down fire install, or leave them off and run the cabinet front firing or up firing. The orientation is yours to choose.

This page is a Performance Optimized enclosure. The airspace, the cutout and the cabinet height all come from the Hertz Mille Pro MPS 250's own published numbers. A Performance box fits your subwoofer. A Performance Optimized box was built for it.

Built Around the MPS 250

Nothing about this cabinet is generic. The baffle is bored to the Hertz 232mm cutout, which is 9.13 inches, and the internal height is set by the driver's 3.25 inch mounting depth. The finished cabinet stands 4.9375 inches tall on a 30 by 15 inch footprint, measured in the down fire position. That is one of the shortest cabinets in the Proline X Down Fire line, and it fits under seats where almost nothing else will go.

The headline number on this driver is 16.8mm of Xmax, which is exceptional for a shallow mount 10. It comes from a polypropylene cone on a 38mm voice coil with a high density flux ferrite motor, rated 500 watts RMS and 1000 watts peak. Hertz includes a mesh grille in the box that can be rotated 90 degrees or removed entirely.

Both coil options are single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by the model you buy: 2 ohms on the MPS 250 S2, 4 ohms on the MPS 250 S4. There is no wiring decision at the driver. Hertz publishes its Thiele-Small measured with coils in parallel and states that Fs, Vas and Qts are unchanged in series wiring, with only Re, Le and BL moving, so one cabinet is correct either way.

Net Volume, Not Gross

We build this cabinet at 0.51 cubic feet net out of 0.58 cubic feet gross, which matches Hertz's own sealed recommendation of 14.2 liters. There is no argument with the manufacturer to have here: the volume they ask for is the volume the cabinet holds after panel thickness, bracing and driver displacement are accounted for.

True net, not marketing net. Internal volume is calculated from the machined cavity dimensions and the driver's published displacement, not estimated from external dimensions minus wall thickness.

Note which coil is which here, because it is counterintuitive. On the MPS 250 the S2 is the better damped driver, with a free-air Qts of 0.41 against the S4's 0.48. In this volume the S2 lands at Qtc 0.673 with F3 at 48.4 Hz and the S4 at Qtc 0.754 with F3 at 42.9 Hz. So the S2 is the tighter alignment and the S4 reaches lower and carries more motor force, 17.3 T·m against 14.7. That pattern reverses on the 12 inch MPS 300, where the S4 is the tighter of the pair, so do not assume it carries across sizes.

Worth saying plainly: Hertz's published enclosure data reconciles with its own T/S parameters. Running their Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math at their recommended volume lands within 0.03 of the Qtc they print. That is not true of every manufacturer in this category, and it means the numbers on this page and the numbers in the Hertz manual are the same numbers.

Down Fire Construction

Cut with V-groove and dado joinery on our ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF, a dense 48.5 lb/ft³ board with a 200 psi internal bond and 410,000 psi MOE. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square on Down Fire cabinets.

Double Baffle, Flush Recess

The front baffle is 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That recovers 3/4 inch of internal clearance, which matters on a cabinet under five inches tall.

Side-Mounted Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite cup with stainless hardware and copper ring terminals, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Side mounted so it stays accessible with the baffle facing the floor.

Perimeter Cross-Bracing

Perimeter cross-bracing ties the long spans together on a wide, shallow cabinet where panel area is the main resonance risk. Polyfill is pre-installed and the driver mounts into 8/32 threaded inserts with stainless machine screws included.

Down Firing Into the Floor

The driver fires downward into the floor and the cabinet couples to the surface it sits on. No standoffs are required; the cabinet sits flat. The sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain below 60 Hz, so in-car response extends well below the anechoic figures quoted above.

For sealed applications Hertz suggests a 15 Hz subsonic filter at 24 dB per octave and a 70 to 80 Hz low pass, also at 24 dB per octave. Those are the manufacturer's own recommended settings for this driver.

Power and Warranty

The MPS 250 is rated 500 watts RMS and 1000 watts peak on a 38mm voice coil. Since both models are single voice coil, the load your amplifier sees is decided when you choose the S2 or the S4. Check what your amplifier is stable into before you order the driver.

The enclosure carries a 1 year limited warranty. Bring your own MPS 250 S2 or MPS 250 S4; the driver is purchased separately.

Cut for the Driver, Not the Catalog

Hertz asked for 14.2 liters, so that is what this cabinet holds, in the shortest package that will take the driver. Machined, assembled and inspected one at a time in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

This enclosure holds 0.51 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 runs a system Qtc of 0.75 with half power at 42.9 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.8 mm travel limit at 738 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 949 W — +211 W, or 29 percent more power for the same 16.8 mm of travel.

At 55.8 the Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.8 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 738 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 949 W before hitting the same 16.8 mm. That is 29 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.
