How much clearance does a down-firing box need?
1.75 inches on our cabinets, and you can check the arithmetic yourself. The P12-S DF measures 6.75 inches tall on its own and 8.5 inches with the feet installed. The difference between those two numbers is the clearance.
The feet are included and they are not optional. A down-firing cabinet sitting flat on the floor has no air path at all, which means the cone is trying to compress air against a solid surface an eighth of an inch away.
If you are measuring a box from somewhere else, do the same subtraction. Overall height minus cabinet height gives you the gap. Anything under about an inch and a half is worth questioning.
Can a down-firing subwoofer sit on carpet?
Yes, on automotive carpet. The objection is real, but it was imported from a different room of the house.
In home audio a subwoofer cabinet sits on short spikes, often less than half an inch, and household pile can genuinely be an inch deep. There the carpet really does choke the gap, and the advice to avoid it is sound.
Automotive carpet and trunk liner are a fraction of that depth. Against 1.75 inches of clearance, factory carpet does not restrict the air path in any way you will hear. The advice got carried across from a situation where it applied to one where it does not.
What actually blocks the gap?
Not carpet. The things that cause real problems are the things you put there afterwards.

- A folded moving blanket, which is the one that catches people out
- Groceries and cargo that shift into the gap in transit
Any of those pressed against the opening does what deep household pile would do. Keep the gap clear and the orientation works exactly as intended.
Why does a down-fire box buzz or walk?
Because it is not secured. A driver at full excursion pushes back on the cabinet with the same force it uses to move air, and that reaction has to go somewhere. In a rear-firing box it goes into a trunk wall. In a down-firing box it goes into the floor through four feet.

A cabinet with two feet on a folded seat back and two on the cargo floor is not sitting on four feet. It is sitting on three, or on two and a pivot, and the cone's reaction force turns it into a lever. It will rock, it will buzz along the seat back, and it will sound like the box is defective.
All four feet on one continuous surface. If your cargo floor steps or your seat back sits proud, build the box a flat platform or move it back until it clears. Do not split the difference.
When it is not the box
Sometimes the buzz is not the enclosure at all. If the floor pan itself resonates, no enclosure fixes that, and swapping boxes will not change anything.
The test is simple. Play the frequency that causes it and put a hand on the panel you suspect. If the panel is moving, the panel is the problem. Trim, seat rails, spare tire covers and license plates are all common culprits and none of them are the subwoofer's fault.

Can I run it forward-firing instead?
On our universal boxes, yes, and that is deliberate. The four feet ship without predrilled mounting holes specifically so the enclosure is not locked into one orientation.
Mount them where your floor wants them for down-fire use, or leave them off entirely and run the cabinet forward firing. That flexibility is the reason we ship the feet loose rather than fitted, and it means a box bought for one install can move to a different vehicle later without becoming the wrong shape.
