JL Audio Models and the Volumes We Cut

Every sealed JL wedge here is built to the sealed volume JL publishes for its driver. The deeper drivers need a taller down-fire cabinet, so their sealed down-fire versions can run larger than JL's figure, and those listings say why. Ported cabinets are solved from JL's published parameters and state their tuning.

The W7AE drivers go in Professional Series ported cabinets: 1.70 cubic feet at 33 Hz for the 10, 2.25 for the 12 and 2.50 for the 13. Duals, sealed down-fire and Micro Series versions are on their own listings. Shared across every cabinet: Langboard Elite MDF cut on ShopSabre routers in Tullahoma, Tennessee, and a Proline X ABS and carbon fibre composite terminal cup pre-wired in 12-gauge OFC.

The Widest Range, Because the Drivers Demand It

Some brands we cut for make one kind of subwoofer. JL Audio does not. A shallow-mount driver built to fit under a seat and a large-format driver built to move air have almost nothing in common except the badge, and putting either in the other cabinet wastes it.

So the range is wide on purpose. Shallow builds go into Micro Series cabinets cut around the depth budget. Standard-depth drivers get Performance Optimized cabinets cut to their published alignment. The flagship gets Professional Series construction, and some of it is ported because those drivers are built for it.

How to Choose

Start from the model number

Not the size. This is the range where that matters most, because JL builds more than one kind of driver at the same diameter.

Sealed or ported

Both, for most models. The sealed wedges are built to the sealed volume JL publishes for each driver, and the ported cabinets are solved from JL's published parameters with the tuning on the listing. Sealed is the smaller, more forgiving box; ported gives more output around its tuning from a larger one. The sealed and ported pages set the two side by side.

Pick the orientation for the space

Standard, wedge and down-fire are all offered. The decision is mostly fitment, since each is cut to the same published data.

Loaded or bare

Several cabinets ship with the JL driver already mounted and wired; the loaded enclosures page gathers them. We stock the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 shallow driver separately as well.

Model, Depth, Then Space

The model does most of the work

A ten inch shallow-mount and a ten inch standard-depth JL want measurably different cabinets. The product page names the exact model each was cut for, and that is the match to work from rather than the diameter.

Then check the depth you have

If the space under a seat or in a shallow well will not take a standard cabinet, you are in Micro Series territory and the choice narrows quickly. Depth is the constraint that eliminates options fastest.

Then the shape and the alignment

A wedge sits flush against a seat back. A down-fire cabinet aims the cone at the floor and needs its feet clearance counted into total height. A ported cabinet needs more airspace than a sealed one for the same driver.

One Badge, Several Very Different Drivers

A shallow-mount JL and a large-format JL of the same stated diameter have almost nothing in common but the badge. Their parameters, their mounting depths and the cabinets they need all differ. Work from the model number on your driver rather than from the size, because here it matters more than on any other brand page.

Buy the Box, and Sometimes the Driver

We stock a shallow-mount JL driver alongside these enclosures and several cabinets ship loaded with the driver already fitted. We do not carry the wider JL line, so for most models you source the subwoofer elsewhere and buy the cabinet here. Either way we build to the same published figures.

Both Alignments, Three Orientations

The range splits close to evenly between sealed and ported. The ported cabinets cover the W0v3, W1v3, W3v3, W6v3, TW1 and TW3 lines in wedge and down-fire, the 13TW5v2, and the W7AE, in Professional Series cabinets at 10, 12 and 13 inch and a down-fire 8. Standard front-firing, wedge and down-fire are all represented, so the orientation can follow the space rather than limiting it.

Performance Optimized is the bulk, with Vehicle Specific direct-fit cabinets, Professional Series builds and shallow Micro Series cabinets alongside. Several ship loaded with the JL driver already fitted.

Which JL Audio subwoofers do these boxes fit?

The W0v3, W1v3, W3v3, W6v3 and W7AE lines and the TW1, TW3 and TW5v2 shallow drivers, from 8 through 13 inch. Each product page names the exact model its cabinet was cut for, and that is the match to work from rather than the nominal size.

Are these built to JL Audio's recommended box volume?

The sealed wedges are, to the figure JL publishes: 0.625 cubic feet for the 10W3v3, 0.55 for the 10W6v3, 0.50 for the 10TW3, 0.80 for the 12TW3 and the 13TW5v2, 1.0 for the 12W6v3, 1.25 for the 12W3v3 and 1.75 for the 13W3v3. Sealed down-fire versions of the deeper drivers run larger because the driver's depth sets the cabinet height, and those listings say so. Ported cabinets are solved from JL's published parameters and state their tuning.

Why is this range bigger than your other brand pages?

Because JL builds more distinct kinds of subwoofer than most makers. A shallow TW3 and a W7AE have almost nothing in common but the badge, so the range spans both alignments, three orientations and four build standards.

Do you sell JL Audio subwoofers?

We stock the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 shallow driver, and several cabinets ship loaded with a JL driver fitted. We do not carry the wider JL line, so for most models you source the driver elsewhere and buy the cabinet here.

Are these sealed or ported?

Both, split close to evenly. Every sealed cabinet ships with polyfill already installed; the ported cabinets ship dry and state their tuning on the listing. A ported box needs more airspace than a sealed one for the same driver.

What is the difference between Micro and Performance Optimized?

Micro Series cabinets are the shallow-space builds, cut around a depth budget for openings a standard cabinet will not fit. Performance Optimized cabinets are cut to one driver on a 1.5 inch double baffle where there is more room. Both work from the same published driver data.

Do you make direct-fit JL boxes for vehicles?

Yes. The F-150 and Super Duty behind-seat boxes ship loaded with the JL Audio 10TW3, and a Toyota Tacoma box is cut for it as well. Each is cut to a named vehicle and year range rather than to a generic opening.
