Ported, With the Port Designed In

Port length and cross-sectional area together set the tuning frequency, and that frequency is chosen for one specific driver. Around it the port radiates alongside the cone and the cabinet produces more output than a sealed box of the same size. Below it the port unloads the cone and output falls away.

The cost is volume. A ported cabinet needs more airspace than a sealed one for the same driver, because the port lives inside it and the alignment needs the room. If your space will not take that, a sealed cabinet in the same spot will do better than a ported one squeezed to fit.

How to Choose

Confirm the space takes a ported cabinet

Ported needs more airspace than sealed for the same driver. That is the first thing to establish.

Read the variant, not just the title

A listing here offers more than one driver size and configuration under a single product. The variant you pick determines the cabinet you get.

Check the tuning frequency

Two cabinets of the same net volume tuned a few hertz apart are different products. The stated tuning tells you where the cabinet does its best work.

Airspace, Tuning and the Model

Airspace decides whether ported is possible

The cabinet has to hold the net volume the alignment needs plus the port itself. Measure the opening before anything else, because this is the constraint that rules the alignment in or out.

Then the tuning frequency

Lower tuning extends deeper and gives up midbass impact; higher tuning does the reverse. It is fixed by the port rather than adjustable afterwards, and each listing states what its cabinet is tuned to.

The Port Is Tuned, Not Just Cut

Are these sealed or ported?

Both are ported, with the port cut and tuned as part of the design. Around the tuning frequency a ported cabinet produces more output than a sealed box of the same size; below it, output falls away steeply.

Why does a ported box need more space?

Because the port has to fit inside the cabinet and the alignment itself needs more net volume to work. If your space will not take the larger cabinet, a sealed enclosure in that space will outperform a ported one that was shrunk to fit.

What is the difference between the two builds?

One is a Performance Optimized cabinet on a 1.5 inch double baffle. The other is Professional Series, with heavier baffle and internal bracing work. Both are cut to the published parameters of the driver they name.

Can I modify the port to change the tuning?

We do not recommend it. Port length and area are cut to produce a specific tuning for a specific driver, and altering either leaves you with an alignment nobody designed.
