INSTALLER'S TAKE

The 10TW3-D4 has been the reference shallow-mount 10" for years. Two numbers explain why: 3.25" mounting depth and 15.2mm one-way Xmax. Most shallow subs sacrifice one for the other — either they're truly shallow but don't move much air, or they move air but need more depth than a proper "shallow" driver should. The 10TW3-D4 hits both marks, thanks to JL's concentric tube cone architecture that packs the motor structure forward inside the cone itself. If you spend any time reading truck audio forums, this is the driver that keeps coming up in crew cab and extended cab F-150, Silverado, RAM, and Tacoma builds. It just works.

Power-wise, 400 watts RMS continuous. Same 400W spec as the 12TW3-D4, which tells you how efficiently JL uses cone excursion versus cone area in this series — the 10 keeps up with the 12 on power handling because the shallow architecture is essentially the same platform scaled down.

Volume math on this box is direct. 0.52 cu ft gross, driver displacement subtracts to land at 0.50 cu ft net. JL's published sealed spec is exactly 0.50 cu ft. Direct hit. In that alignment the 10TW3-D4 delivers a Qtc around 0.96 with F3 just above 40 Hz — a slightly warm, punchy character that fills the cabin without needing crazy volume to feel it. That's exactly what you want in a shallow-mount daily driver install: a driver that sounds warm and musical at reasonable listening levels, not one that needs to be dimed to sound good.

Wedge geometry is the standard PO trunk-load pattern scaled down for the 10. 23" wide, 13" tall, 4.5" deep at top, 9.25" deep at bottom. That 4.5" top depth is unusual — it's what lets this cabinet slide under low parcel shelves and under-seat clearances that a full-depth wedge couldn't fit. Combined with the TW3's 3.25" mounting depth, the whole system stays vehicle-friendly.

Sizing considerations: this box is compact. 23" wide fits between wheelwells in most trunks with room to spare. 13" tall clears parcel shelf heights in nearly all sedans and coupes. 9.25" bottom depth still requires some trunk floor space, but far less than a conventional 10" wedge. Best fits: compact sedan trunks where a 12" won't work, coupe trunks (BRZ/GR86, Camaro, Mustang, Challenger), Wrangler cargo bins, Miata behind-seat, Corvette rear cargo well, and any pickup where you want a trunk-load acoustic pattern rather than an under-seat direct-firing setup.

The 10TW3 has TWO impedance variants — D4 (dual 4-ohm) and D8 (dual 8-ohm). Unlike the 12TW3 which only comes in D4. For a single-driver install, the D4 is nearly always the right choice — parallel wire the coils for a 2-ohm load, feed it with a 300-400 watt class D monoblock, done. The D8 exists mainly for dual-driver installs where paralleling two 4-ohm loads (from two D8 drivers wired series-per-coil-then-parallel-across-drivers) gets you to a comfortable 2-ohm total. If you're building a dual 10 setup, ask us about the D8 — otherwise the D4 is the standard.

Tab-ear mounting on the TW3: same as the 12. Three plastic tabs stick out from the driver frame instead of a continuous flange. #8 or #10 pan-head screws only. No countersunk (tapered) screws — they wedge the plastic tabs outward under vibration and eventually crack them. The Proline X wedge ships with pan-head stainless screws and threaded inserts already positioned for the TW3 tab pattern.

One more thing worth mentioning: the 10TW3-D4 needs only 0.25" of clearance behind the motor to breathe — that no-pole-vent motor design is what makes true shallow-mount work. The cabinet gives it well more than that at the driver's mounting position (5+ inches at center). No thermal or breathing concerns whatsoever.

Same JL warning as always: no passive crossover coils in series with this driver. Use your amp's active low-pass filter. 80-100 Hz LP is the standard range.

If you need a real 10" in a trunk-load wedge but you don't have depth for a conventional 10, this is the JL-spec box for the TW3.

Performance Optimized Wedge | JL Audio 10TW3

Single 10" Shallow-Mount Sealed Wedge | Rear-Firing Trunk-Load for JL's Thin-Line 10TW3-D4

0.52 ft³ Gross 0.50 ft³ Net (JL Spec) Ultra-Shallow Wedge 23" × 13" × 4.5/9.25" V-Groove / Dado Built in Tennessee

The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 in JL's Spec-Perfect Sealed Volume

The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 is JL's shallow-mount 10" thin-line subwoofer — 10 inches of cone area with just 3.25" of mounting depth, and 15.2mm of one-way linear excursion (more than the standard W3v3 despite the shallow packaging). JL's patented concentric tube cone architecture places the motor structure forward inside the injection-molded cone body, letting this driver deliver full-size 10" bass in enclosures that a conventional 10" driver couldn't fit. 400 watts RMS continuous with a mica-injected polypropylene cone, rubber surround, cast alloy basket, and JL's tab-ear mounting design.

The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 10 for JL Audio TW3 is engineered to hit JL's exact published sealed specification. 0.52 cubic feet gross internal volume minus the 10TW3-D4's driver displacement lands at 0.50 cubic feet net — exact match to JL's published 0.50 cubic foot sealed spec, delivering the Qtc 0.96 warm/impactful alignment JL's engineers targeted for the TW3 series.

0.52 cubic feet gross = 0.50 cubic feet net after the 10TW3-D4's driver displacement. Exact match to JL Audio's published optimum sealed volume for the 10TW3-D4 (Qtc 0.96, F3 just above 40 Hz). The ultra-shallow wedge geometry — 4.5" deep at the top rising to 9.25" at the bottom — is engineered around the TW3's 3.25" mounting depth, mounting the driver on the vertical trunk-lid-side face and firing rearward into the trunk cavity.

Why the TW3 Exists (and Why This Wedge Fits Where Others Can't)

The JL 10TW3-D4 was engineered for one specific mission: full-size 10" bass in vehicles and configurations where a standard 10" enclosure won't fit. Extended-cab and crew-cab pickup trucks (where the driver commonly mounts under a rear seat that lifts up). Sports cars with shallow parcel-shelf areas. Sedans with low decklid clearance. SUVs where cargo floor height is critical. The 10TW3-D4 has been the reference under-seat subwoofer for years because of two specific numbers: 3.25" mounting depth and 15.2mm one-way Xmax. Most shallow 10s give you one or the other. JL delivers both.

The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 10 for JL Audio TW3 solves the same space problem in trunk-load wedge form. The vertical trunk-lid-side face is only 4.5" deep at the top, tapering to 9.25" at the bottom — meaning the top of the cabinet slides under low parcel shelves and rear seat backs that a full-depth wedge could never clear. Combined with the TW3's own shallow mounting depth, this is one of the most vehicle-friendly full-size 10" trunk-load enclosures available.

Seat-Side Face Matches Seat Lean

Most factory rear seat backs lean roughly 20 degrees back from vertical. The angled face of this wedge (4.5" at top, 9.25" at bottom) matches that lean, tucking against the seat back with no wasted gap. The ultra-shallow top face slides under decklids and parcel shelves that block deeper cabinets.

Trunk-Lid-Side Face Fires the Woofer

The vertical face on the opposite side of the wedge (23" wide × 13" tall) is where the 10TW3-D4 mounts. The driver fires rearward toward the trunk lid, using the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber — the classic SQ trunk-load install pattern, now available in shallow-mount format.

Trunk Cavity Loading

Firing the woofer into the trunk cavity rather than directly into the cabin uses the trunk itself as an extension of the acoustic system. Low frequencies transmit into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and cabin boundaries — smoother than direct-firing setups.

Compact, Shallow Footprint

23" wide by 13" tall by 4.5-9.25" deep. Smaller cabinet than the 12" TW3 wedge for tighter trunk installs, low-clearance SUV cargo floors, and coupe trunks where a 12" simply won't fit. Same shallow top-face design principle — the 4.5" top depth threads under obstructions that block conventional wedges.

Engineered to JL Audio's Published Sealed Specification

JL Audio publishes 0.50 cubic feet net internal as the recommended sealed enclosure for the 10TW3-D4. This is JL's own engineered target — the volume where the TW3's motor, suspension, and cone assembly deliver the sealed response their engineers designed the driver for. The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 10 delivers 0.52 cubic feet gross internal, which after subtracting the 10TW3-D4's driver displacement lands right at the 0.50 cubic foot JL spec.

What the JL Spec Delivers

The 10TW3-D4 in its JL-spec 0.50 cu ft sealed alignment delivers a Qtc of approximately 0.96 with F3 just above 40 Hz — a slightly warm alignment with good upper-bass presence, ideal for daily-driven vehicles where cabin gain smooths out the low end. This is a musical, punchy character rather than a strictly flat one, which suits the typical use case for a shallow-mount driver in a truck, sports car, or compact vehicle. If you have room for a slightly larger enclosure (0.75 cu ft), the alignment flattens out to Qtc 0.86 — but that's not this cabinet. This cabinet delivers exactly what JL specifies as optimum.

Mounting Geometry and Driver Fitment

The vertical trunk-lid-side baffle is cut to the 10TW3-D4's exact 9.625" cutout specification. The 10TW3-D4's 3.25" mounting depth fits inside the cabinet with clearance — internal depth from the vertical baffle to the interior of the angled seat-side face ranges from approximately 3.75" at the top edge to 8.5" at the bottom (after 3/4" MDF panel thickness), with the driver's mounting position at cabinet center providing well over 5" of clearance behind the motor. JL's no-pole-vent motor design permits mounting close to the rear wall of an enclosure — the driver requires only 0.25" of rear clearance to breathe.

Tab-Ear Mounting

The TW3 uses JL's tab-ear mounting design — plastic mounting ears extending outward from the driver frame, rather than a continuous perimeter flange. This maximizes cone area within the mounting footprint but requires specific mounting hardware: use #8 or #10 pan-head screws (NOT tapered/countersunk), since countersunk screws can wedge the plastic ears outward under vibration and crack them over time. The Proline X wedge baffle is pre-drilled and threaded-insert equipped for the TW3's tab pattern with pan-head hardware included.

Performance Series Construction, Driver-Specific Tuning

Langboard Elite MDF

Premium 3/4" MDF panels milled to documented spec — denser and more dimensionally stable than commodity MDF. Especially important in a shallow cabinet where panel-to-air ratio is high — panel resonance would color the sound more than in a deeper box, and Langboard's density minimizes that risk.

V-Groove and Dado Joinery

CNC-cut V-grooves at every panel intersection let the wedge cabinet fold into its angled shape with maximum glue surface. Dado joints lock the vertical woofer baffle and the ultra-shallow angled seat-side panel into the side walls — no fasteners visible from outside, no exposed end grain at joints.

TW3-Specific Baffle Machining

The 9.625" cutout is CNC-machined with the tab-ear mounting positions pre-drilled and 8/32 threaded inserts pressed into the baffle backside. #8 pan-head stainless steel screws included — not countersunk, per JL's mounting requirements for the tab-ear design.

Pre-Wired Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS/carbon fiber composite terminal cup, pre-wired with 12-gauge OFC inside the cabinet, with stainless steel hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations on the input side.

Every panel is cut on ShopSabre CNC routers in our Tullahoma, TN facility. The shallow wedge geometry requires precise CNC compound cuts — the 4.5" top-face-to-9.25" bottom-face depth transition over 13" of height must be dimensionally perfect to hit both the JL-spec volume target and the correct 20-degree seat-side mating angle. Internal volume is verified on every unit to ensure the JL-spec 0.50 cubic foot net target is achieved.

Customize Your Build

Carpet Finish

Dark Gray Trunkliner is the standard durable wrap, matched to most factory trunk and cargo-area carpet tones. Plush Black (+$10) is a deeper, more luxurious nap that pairs well with blacked-out interiors and show builds.

Acrylic Insert Color

Choose Black, Blue, Red, or White for the baffle insert to match your build. Or skip the insert entirely (-$40) for a clean, understated look. The insert is purely cosmetic — performance is identical across colors.

Box-Only or Loaded

Add a JL Audio 10TW3-D4 (Dual 4-ohm) or 10TW3-D8 (Dual 8-ohm) driver directly to your order and we'll ship the complete loaded system, ready to wire to your amplifier. Most single-driver installs use the D4 wired parallel for a 2-ohm load. Already own your 10TW3? Order the enclosure box-only and drop in the driver you have.

Wiring the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 to Your Amplifier

The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 is a dual-voice-coil driver with both coils at 4 ohms. This gives you two standard wiring options via the pre-wired terminal cup.

Parallel wiring (2 ohm total load): Both voice coils in parallel presents a 2-ohm load to your amplifier — the higher-output configuration, ideal for modern class D monoblocks stable at 2 ohms. Recommended for maximizing SPL and power transfer from typical 300-400 watt monoblock amps. This is the standard wiring for single-driver installs.

Series wiring (8 ohm total load): Both voice coils in series presents an 8-ohm load — used mainly with bridged high-voltage amp configurations, class AB amplifiers, or multi-driver installs where impedance summing matters.

Alternative driver: 10TW3-D8. If you're building a multi-driver system, JL Audio also offers the 10TW3-D8 (Dual 8-ohm) variant, which pairs better in dual-driver configurations at 2 ohms total (each driver wired parallel to 4 ohms, then two drivers wired parallel to 2 ohms). Either D4 or D8 variant fits this cabinet identically.

The 10TW3-D4 is rated for 400 watts RMS continuous with a 100-400 watt RMS recommended amplifier range. Aim for a well-regulated monoblock delivering 300-400 watts RMS at your chosen impedance for the best combination of headroom, output, and long-term reliability. Set your amplifier's active low-pass filter between 80 and 100 Hz for musical accuracy.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements — and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
