Electrical Mistakes
Most systems that fail early fail on the electrical side, and the failures repeat.
No fuse within 18 inches of the battery
The fuse at the battery protects the wire, not the amplifier. Without it, a power cable that chafes through against the firewall has the whole battery behind it. This is the single most consequential omission in car audio and it is also the cheapest to correct.
Undersized power wire
Wire gauge is a function of current and run length, not of what came in the box. Amplifier kits sold on price frequently ship copper-clad aluminium at a gauge marked optimistically. Size the wire for the fused current over the actual routed distance.
Grounding to a painted panel
A ground point needs bare metal, a short run, and a mechanical fastener into chassis steel. Paint is an insulator. A poor ground shows up as alternator whine and as an amplifier that drops into protection under load.
Signal Mistakes
Running RCA alongside power
Signal cable picks up induced noise from power cable run parallel to it. Route power down one side of the vehicle and signal down the other. Where they must cross, cross at ninety degrees.
Setting gain by ear
Covered in the power guide, and worth repeating here because it destroys more drivers than any other single habit. Gain matches the amplifier input to the source output. It is set once, with a tone and a meter.
Enclosure Mistakes
Ignoring driver displacement
A driver occupies volume. The number that matters is net internal volume after the driver, the port and any bracing are subtracted, not the volume of the empty box. Building to gross volume produces a cabinet that is meaningfully larger than intended, and the alignment moves with it.
Polyfill in a ported box
Polyfill belongs in sealed enclosures, where it slows the air inside and makes the cabinet behave as though it were slightly larger. In a ported enclosure it interferes with port velocity and does not do the same job. Our sealed builds ship with polyfill already installed.
No subsonic filter on a ported build
Below tuning, a ported enclosure stops loading the cone and excursion climbs quickly. A high-pass set below the tuning frequency keeps the driver inside its mechanical limit on content the box cannot support.
