Wedge Subwoofer Box Calculator

Quick answer: a wedge box’s volume is the trapezoid area of its side times its width. Internal width × internal height × the average of the two internal depths, divided by 1,728, gives cubic feet. Subtract the driver’s displacement for net volume. The taper is floor depth minus top depth, and on a 20 degree rake it equals the height × tan 20.

Volumes are internal air volume less the displacement you enter. Bracing and port volume are not deducted here; on our ported wedges the listing states the net figure after the port.

Why a Wedge Box Has Two Depths

A wedge enclosure keeps its front baffle vertical and rakes the rear panel, so the cabinet is deep at the floor and shallow at the top. That is what lets it sit flush against a leaning seat back and recover the floor space a square box wastes. It also means one depth figure tells you nothing: you need the depth at the floor and the depth at the top, and the difference between them is the taper.

On every Proline X wedge the rake is a constant 20 degrees, so the taper is simply the cabinet height times the tangent of 20 degrees. A 13 inch tall ten tapers about 4.7 inches; a 15 inch tall twelve about 5.5; an 18 inch tall fifteen about 6.6. The calculator reports the rake your dimensions imply, so you can see at a glance whether a listing is a true wedge or a box that only tapers a little.

The Math, in One Line

The side of a wedge is a trapezoid, so its area is the height times the average of the two depths. Multiply by the internal width for cubic inches and divide by 1,728 for cubic feet. The internal figures are the external ones less the walls: two wall thicknesses off the width and the height, one off the floor depth and one off the top depth for the back panel, plus the front baffle stack.

Our Performance Optimized wedges are built with the side panels dropped into dados inset half an inch from each shell edge and a four-layer front (trim, second baffle, shell front, back). That is why the Proline X preset takes 2.5 inches off the width and 3.0 off each depth rather than 1.5. It reproduces the published net volumes on our sealed wedges to within a few hundredths, which is a useful check on any wedge listing: if the volume does not fall out of the dimensions, one of the two numbers is wrong.

The dual is quoted per chamber, so the calculator’s whole-box figure is compared at half. The ported box is quoted after the port’s own volume, so the calculator’s figure runs higher; the difference is the port channel and the braces.

How do you calculate the volume of a wedge subwoofer box?
Treat the side as a trapezoid. Internal width times internal height times the average of the two internal depths gives cubic inches; divide by 1,728 for cubic feet. Subtract the driver's displacement for the net volume the alignment sees. This calculator does that from the outside dimensions and your wall thickness.
Why does a wedge box have two depths?
Because the rear panel is raked so the cabinet is deep at the floor and shallow at the top. On a Proline X wedge the rake is 20 degrees, so floor depth minus top depth equals the height times tan 20, about 5.5 inches on a 15 inch tall twelve. Both depths matter for fit and for volume.
Is the taper on the front or the back of the box?
On a true wedge the taper is on the rear panel and the driver baffle stays vertical. A box that tips the baffle is an angled-baffle enclosure, a different product. The volume math is the same trapezoid either way, but the fitment and the way the cone loads the cabin are not.
What wall thickness should I enter?
0.75 inch for the usual 3/4 MDF. If the front is a double baffle, tick the double-baffle box and the calculator takes 1.5 inches off the depths at the front. Proline X Performance Optimized wedges use dados inset half an inch and a four-layer front stack, so the preset for those builds applies 2.5 off width, 1.5 off height and 3.0 off depth.
What net volume does my subwoofer want?
Look it up with the sealed box calculator, which turns Qts, Fs and Vas into the volume for a target Qtc, or start from the manufacturer's recommended sealed volume. Then use the solve-for-width mode here to find the external width that delivers it at your height and depths.
Does the wedge shape change the sound?
No. A sealed alignment depends on net volume, bracing and the seal, and the taper touches none of them. Non-parallel walls arguably help by breaking up one internal standing wave. What the shape changes is where the box fits.
