What Is Subwoofer Airspace?

“Airspace” is the net internal volume of air inside a subwoofer box — the space the driver actually works against, after you subtract what the sub, port, and bracing take up. Every subwoofer is engineered for a range of airspace: too little and the bass gets peaky and stiff; too much and it loses control and can bottom out. This airspace calculator turns the driver’s Thiele–Small parameters into the box volume it wants.

Sealed airspace is set by your target Qtc (system Q): a smaller box raises Qtc for a compact, punchy sound; a larger box lowers it toward the flat, accurate 0.707 alignment. Ported airspace is larger and works with a tuned port to boost output and extension.

How much airspace does my subwoofer need?
It depends on the driver’s Qts, Fs, and Vas and whether you go sealed or ported. Enter those values above and the airspace calculator returns the recommended sealed volume (for compact, balanced, and max-SQ targets) and the ported volume with its tuning. As a rule, sealed boxes are smaller and ported boxes are larger for the same driver.
What is subwoofer airspace or box volume?
Airspace is the net internal air volume inside the enclosure — the space the subwoofer works against after the driver, port, and bracing are subtracted. It’s usually given in cubic feet or liters and is the single most important number when building or buying a box.
Is more airspace better for a subwoofer?
Not always. Each driver has a recommended range. More airspace generally means deeper, lower bass but less control; less airspace means tighter, punchier bass but can get peaky. Match the volume to the driver — too far outside its range hurts sound and can risk mechanical damage.
How do I measure the airspace of a box?
Multiply the internal width × height × depth in inches and divide by 1,728 for cubic feet, then subtract the volume taken up by the driver, port, and any bracing to get net airspace. Build to a slightly larger gross volume so the net lands on target.
What’s the difference between sealed and ported airspace?
A sealed (closed) box needs less airspace and gives tight, accurate bass; a ported box needs more airspace plus a tuned port and gives louder, deeper output. The calculator shows both recommendations so you can choose based on your goals and available space.
