A wedge subwoofer box and an angled-baffle subwoofer box look alike from across a parking lot and behave nothing alike in a car. On a wedge the front baffle stands vertical and the rear panel slopes. On an angled-baffle box the driver itself is tipped back. Most listings use the word wedge for both, and that is where buyers go wrong.
We cut both shapes on the same routers, so we have no reason to talk you into one. Here is which panel tapers on each, what that does to the sound and the fitment, and how to tell them apart from a photo.

What is a wedge subwoofer box?
A wedge is a rectangular enclosure with one change: the back panel is raked so the cabinet is deep at the floor and shallow at the top. Everything else stays square. The baffle the driver bolts to is vertical and at full height, the sides are true rectangles turned into trapezoids only by that one sloping edge, and the top is a flat shelf.
On our builds the rake is a constant 20 degrees, which is close to the lean of a factory rear seat back. The taper, meaning the difference between the deep edge and the shallow edge, is the cabinet height times the tangent of 20 degrees. A 15 inch tall twelve tapers about 5.5 inches; a 13 inch tall ten tapers about 4.7. That is why our listings quote two depths, for example 13.5 inches at the base tapering to 8.25 at the top on the JL Audio 12W3v3 sealed wedge.
The point of the shape is fitment. Slide the raked face against a seat back or the sloping rear wall of a hatch and the cabinet recovers the triangle of floor space a square box would leave empty. The driver, meanwhile, has no idea it is in a wedge. It fires rearward off a flat vertical panel exactly as it would in a standard cabinet.

What is an angled-baffle box, and why does it sound different?
An angled-baffle box does the opposite. The rear panel is vertical and the baffle is tipped back, typically somewhere between 10 and 30 degrees, so the cone aims upward toward the headliner or the rear window. Builders do it to fire over a seat back or to clear cargo, and there are installs where it is the right answer.
But it is a different acoustic product. Where the cone points decides which cabin surface loads it first and how the output reaches the front seats. A rearward-firing cone loads against the trunk lid or the hatch; an upward-firing cone loads against glass and headliner. Neither is wrong. What matters is that the change should be a decision you made, not a side effect of a shape you bought for the fitment.
Does the taper change how a sealed box sounds?
No. A sealed alignment is set by net volume against the driver's parameters, by how stiff the cabinet is, and by whether it seals. The taper touches none of those. A wedge cut to the same net volume as a square box, for the same driver, lands on the same Qtc and the same F3.
Our own builds show it. The Audiofrog GB10 gets 0.60 cubic feet per driver in the dual wedge and 0.60 in the dual down-fire, and the alignment figures on both listings are identical because they were solved from the same published parameters. The cabinets share nothing but the driver and the airspace.

Which one fits behind a seat?
Both were invented for that spot, and they solve it differently. The wedge puts its raked face against the seat and its flat baffle toward the rear of the vehicle, so in a truck cab the driver fires at the back wall a few inches away and in a hatchback it fires into the cargo area. The box recovers the floor space under the seat's lean.
The angled-baffle box puts its flat back against the seat, or the cab wall, and tips the driver up so it clears whatever is above it. It wins when there is no room behind the box for the cone to breathe, because the cone is now aimed at open air above. It loses the rearward loading and it puts the cone where cargo can reach it.
For a crew cab bench with a few inches of rake behind it, the wedge is the natural fit, and the measuring guide for a wedge behind a truck seat walks through the three numbers you need. For a regular cab with the seat hard against the back wall, neither shape fits and you are in down-fire or vehicle-specific territory.
How do you tell them apart in a listing?
Read the dimensions before the description. A true wedge quotes two depths, worded as "at base tapering to at top" or as a pair like 6.37 and 11.10 inches. An angled-baffle box quotes one depth and a baffle angle, or shows a driver that is visibly tilted in the photo.
Then look at the driver face. On a wedge the cutout sits on a flat panel that is square to the floor, and the top of the cabinet is a shelf you could set a coffee on. On an angled-baffle box the cutout is on the sloped face and the top is usually a narrow edge.
