Ported Wedge Subwoofer Box: Where the Port Goes and Why

On a ported wedge subwoofer box the port lives in the bottom rear corner, where the floor of the cabinet meets the raked back wall. One added panel closes a triangular channel that runs the full width of the box and exits through one side. The front baffle stays a plain vertical panel with a driver in it, exactly as it does on the sealed wedge.

That placement is not an accident of packaging. It is what the wedge shape gives you for free, and it is why a ported wedge can be tuned into the low thirties without a tube or a bend. Here is where the port goes, why it goes there, how it is sized, and what it costs you in cabinet.

Where does the port go on a ported wedge?

Look at the side of the cabinet. The floor runs back from the baffle, and the raked wall comes down from the top shelf to meet it at the rear. The angle between them is fixed by the 20 degree rake, so the corner is a wedge inside the wedge. Add one panel across that corner, parallel to neither wall, and you have closed a triangular channel.

That channel is the port. It runs the full internal width of the cabinet. One end is open to the inside of the box, which is the throat. The other end exits through the side panel, which is the mouth. Air moves straight along it with nothing to turn around, and the channel's length is set by the width of the cabinet rather than by anything you had to build.

The added panel seats in straight dados cut into the floor and the raked wall, so it is located by the cut rather than by glue alone, and its long edges are bevelled to sit flush against both surfaces. From outside, the only evidence is a low rectangular mouth on one side of the box, with its edges rounded.

Why not a round port through the baffle, or a slot up the side?

Because the wedge does not have the room, and because the baffle is the one panel we refuse to compromise. A round port long enough to tune a twelve into the low thirties needs somewhere between 20 and 30 inches of length, and a wedge that is 11 inches deep at the top and 16 at the floor has nowhere to put it without a bend. Bends add turbulence and add joints to leak.

A slot up the side of the cabinet takes internal width, which on a wedge is the dimension that sets the volume. Every inch of slot wall is an inch the alignment loses. The corner channel uses two walls the cabinet already has and adds only one, so it costs the least airspace of any placement.

Keeping the port off the baffle also keeps the baffle a vertical panel with one driver on it, which is the whole point of the wedge over an angled-baffle box. If you want the argument for a slot over a tube in general, round versus slot ports makes it with numbers.

How is the port sized?

Area first. The channel's cross-section is set against the driver's excursion and power so the air leaving the mouth stays under 17 metres per second at the tuning frequency. Above that, a port audibly rushes on the notes it is supposed to be reinforcing. Then length follows from the area and the tuning frequency we want, and the wedge's geometry decides whether that length fits across the width.

The mouth edges carry a half inch roundover on three sides and the panel's throat end is eased too. Both lower the air speed at the edges where it would otherwise separate, and both are credited in the sizing, which is why the IDMAX12 build went from right at the 17 metre limit to under 11 with no change to the cabinet.

Tuning is chosen for the car rather than for a chart. A vehicle adds roughly 12 dB per octave below about 45 Hz, so a box tuned very low doubles up on what the cabin already does and leaves the 40 to 60 Hz region thin. Our ported wedges sit in the low thirties, close to each driver's own resonance, so the cone is barely moving where the port is doing the work. What does the port cost you in cabinet size?

Depth, mostly. A ported alignment needs more net volume than a sealed one for the same driver, and the port itself displaces air inside the box, so the ported wedge for a given twelve is deeper than the sealed wedge for the same driver. Height stays close to the sealed figure and width is capped at 29.5 inches for a single, so the volume goes into the floor depth.

Two things stand out. The ported cabinets are five to six inches wider and two to three inches deeper at the floor than the sealed one, which is the price of the alignment. And the two JL builds show how much the driver matters: the shallow-motor CompRT12 gets a cabinet two inches shallower than the W6v3 at nearly the same tuning, because the motor sets the minimum top depth and the top depth sets the floor depth through the rake.

Why are ported wedges single-driver only?

Because the port tunes the whole cabinet. In a sealed dual each driver gets its own chamber and its own volume. In a ported box the drivers would share one tuned volume, and the alignment then depends on both drivers behaving identically and on a port sized for twice the air. It can be done. It is a different design problem, and the trunk wedge's width cap leaves no room to solve it well.

So the duals and the triple in the wedge collection are sealed builds, and every ported wedge is one driver in one chamber. If you want two ported drivers behind a seat, two single cabinets side by side is the honest answer.

Which drivers earn a ported wedge?

Ones whose free-air resonance and compliance give the port something to do, and ones whose motors will not fit anywhere else. The IDMAX12 is the case that started this line: its motor needs 8.57 inches of external height in a down-fire cabinet, and the ported down-fire chassis tops out at 8.50. The wedge stands 15 inches tall and takes the motor in depth instead, so a driver that had no ported home now has one.

Not every driver qualifies. The eights and the shallow tens are solved case by case, and where the numbers say the port would add cabinet without adding useful output, the driver stays sealed. Two rules once it is in the truck

It ships dry, and it stays dry. Every sealed cabinet we build ships with polyfill installed; a ported one must not have any, because damping material changes the volume the port is tuned against. Stuff a ported wedge and you have moved the tuning without shortening the port.
