Two Drivers, One Cabinet

Dual twelves are the size most people mean when they say a dual sub box: about the cone area of a single fifteen with the faster, tighter response of two smaller drivers, in a cabinet a normal trunk still takes.

Every cabinet here holds two 12 inch drivers. The driver-matched cabinets are cut to the parameters of the driver they name, and the universal cabinets take any pair that clears their cutout and depth. Each listing says whether the pair shares one chamber or gets one each, and gives the net volume for the whole box.

One Chamber or Two

Two separate chambers
The Performance Optimized sealed duals split the cabinet with a bonded full-height divider, so each driver gets its own sealed volume and its own polyfill. Neither driver loads the other, and the alignment on the listing is the alignment in each chamber.

One shared, ported chamber
The Professional Series duals put both drivers in one chamber vented through one slot port. That is how a ported pair is normally built, and it is why the pair has to match: same model, same coil, so neither driver is pushing against a load it was not picked for.

One shared, universal air space
The Performance Series duals are universal cabinets with one shared volume, sized by cutout and mounting depth rather than to a named driver. They are the lowest-cost way into a pair.

How to Choose a Dual 12 Inch Box

Start from the driver
Most of these cabinets are cut to one named driver. Match the model and coil on the listing to the pair you own, and run two of the same driver.

Sealed or ported
Sealed is the smaller, more forgiving box and holds its output below tuning. Ported gives more output around its tuning from a larger cabinet. The sealed and ported pages set the two side by side.

Plan the wiring before the box
Two dual-voice-coil drivers can land on several final loads. Two dual 2 ohm drivers reach 0.5, 2 or 8 ohms; two dual 4 ohm drivers reach 1, 4 or 16 ohms. Pick the pair to suit the amplifier's stable load, then the box. How to wire two subs to one amp walks through each.

Will a Dual 12 Fit?

Measure width first
A dual cabinet is wide before it is deep. The dual 12 inch cabinets here run from about 28 to 44 inches wide, and every listing prints its external dimensions. Measure the opening at its narrowest point, not the floor.

Behind a seat or against a seat back
The wedges rake their rear panel to sit flush against a seat back or a truck cab wall. See every shape in the wedge collection.

On a cargo floor
The down fires stand on feet with the cones facing the floor, the shape for an SUV or hatch where height is short. See the down-fire collection.

Net Volume Is for the Whole Box

On a dual listing the net volume is the total for both drivers. Where the pair gets separate chambers, the listing also gives the figure per chamber, which is what each driver actually sees.

Run a Matched Pair

Two of the same driver, same coil. Mixing models or coils in one cabinet gives each driver a different load and neither the alignment it was cut for.

Dual 12 Inch Subwoofer Box Questions

Do both drivers share one chamber?

It depends on the series. The Performance Optimized sealed duals give each driver its own chamber behind a full-height divider. The Professional Series ported duals put both drivers in one chamber with one port. The Performance Series universal duals share one air space. Each listing states which.

Is the net volume per driver or for the whole box?

For the whole box. On a dual listing the net volume is the total; where the chambers are separate, the listing also gives the figure per chamber.

Can I put two different subwoofers in one dual box?

No. Run two of the same model and the same coil. Different drivers want different volumes and present different loads, so in one cabinet neither gets the alignment it was cut for.

How should I wire two dual voice coil subwoofers?

Two dual 2 ohm drivers can land on 0.5, 2 or 8 ohms; two dual 4 ohm drivers on 1, 4 or 16 ohms. Match the final load to the amplifier's minimum stable impedance. How to wire two subs to one amp shows each configuration.
