A fifteen is not a louder twelve. It moves substantially more air for the same excursion, which means it reaches its output with less cone travel and less distortion, and it asks for a cabinet volume that rules out most of the places a twelve would go.

Net volume for a driver-matched cabinet is calculated from the parameters the driver manufacturer publishes for that model. Universal-cutout cabinets are cut to a standard cutout and a stated volume range instead.

The Only Size Where Wedge Is the Majority

On every other page the wedge is a minority shape. At fifteen inches it is the most common one here, and that follows directly from the geometry: a cabinet this tall has to lean on something, and a taper on the rear panel turns dead space behind a seat back into usable volume.

The baffle stays vertical, so the driver still fires forward. What the taper buys is depth at the bottom of the cabinet where the vehicle has room for it, and clearance at the top where it does not.

How to Choose a 15 Inch Enclosure

Confirm the volume before anything else

This is the size where the cabinet decides whether the build is possible. Published external dimensions are on every listing and they are the first thing to check, not the last.

Then pick the shape

Wedge if there is a seat back or bulkhead to sit against, which is the common case at this size. Standard front-firing if the space is a plain rectangle. Down-fire only where the floor is flat and the extra height is available.

Then sealed or ported

Sealed keeps a fifteen tight and controlled in the smallest cabinet the alignment allows. Ported adds output around the tuning frequency and adds volume to do it. At this size that extra volume is what usually settles it.

Then match the amplifier honestly

A fifteen reaches its output with less cone travel than a twelve, which makes it easy to underestimate what it wants. Work from the driver RMS at your final wired impedance rather than from peak figures.

Single or dual

A dual fifteen is something you plan the vehicle around. Each chamber is still cut to the volume the driver wants, so the cabinet is genuinely large rather than a single split in half.

Volume is the constraint, not depth

At smaller sizes mounting depth eliminates the most options. At fifteen inches it is sheer cabinet volume. Measure the whole opening, not just the face, and remember a ported fifteen needs room for the port on top of its net volume.

Then the shape the space allows

Wedge is the most common shape here because a cabinet this tall usually has to lean on something. Standard front-firing works where the space is a plain rectangle deep enough to take it. Down-fire is rare at this size, because the feet clearance adds to a height that is already the problem.

Is a 15 inch subwoofer worth it over a 12?

If you have the volume for it. A fifteen moves substantially more air for the same excursion, so it reaches its output with less cone travel and less distortion. What it asks for is cabinet volume, and a fifteen in a box too small for it will be beaten by a twelve in the right one.
