A ported 15 inch subwoofer box adds a tuned vent so the cabinet gives more output around its tuning frequency than the same driver sealed, for the same amplifier. The port is sized to the driver's excursion and power, and every listing on this page states its tuning, because two cabinets of the same volume tuned five hertz apart are different products.

A fifteen wants airspace, so the wedge leads at this size: a tall cabinet has to lean on something, and the seat back is the obvious wall. Depth and net volume are the numbers to read before anything else. CNC-cut in Tullahoma, Tennessee from Langboard Elite MDF on our own ShopSabre routers. Ported cabinets ship dry.

What a Port Does for a 15 Inch Driver

Below its tuning frequency a ported box unloads the cone; above it the port and the cone work together and the cabinet gives more output per watt than a sealed box of the same driver. The tuning on this page runs 28 to 34.5 Hz, chosen for the car rather than for a chart: a vehicle adds roughly 12 dB per octave below about 45 Hz, so a very low tuning doubles up on what the cabin already does and leaves the 40 to 60 Hz region thin.

Port area is sized against the driver's excursion and power so air speed in the vent stays low enough not to chuff at full stroke. Change the port and you have a different enclosure, which is why each listing states its own tuning and why we do not recommend retuning one.

Ported cabinets ship dry on purpose. Damping material changes the volume the port is tuned against, so a stuffed ported box is a mistuned box.

How to Choose a Ported 15 Inch Enclosure

Start from the driver

Every driver-matched cabinet here is cut to one driver's published parameters and states its tuning. Pick the driver first and the enclosure follows. The brand filter shows every driver line we cut this size for.

Read the tuning, not just the volume

The tuning frequency tells you how the box will sound in the car; the volume only tells you how big it is. On this page tuning runs 28 to 34.5 Hz, and the lower end of that range is for drivers with a low free-air resonance, not for every driver.

Ported or sealed

Ported gives more output around its tuning for the same power from a larger cabinet, and asks for a subsonic filter. If depth or height is the limit, the sealed 15 inch page usually wins. If the space is there and output per watt matters, this is the page.

Do not add polyfill

Every sealed cabinet we build ships with polyfill. These ship dry: damping material changes the volume the port is tuned against, so stuffing a ported box moves the tuning without shortening the port.

Will a Ported 15 Inch Box Fit

Three measurements decide it, and they are all on the listing.

Depth

Depth on this page runs from about 15.7 to 22.8 inches. Measure the space where the box will sit, not at the opening, because wheel wells, seat brackets and the taper of a trunk floor narrow it toward the back. A shallow-mount driver gets a shallower cabinet, which is why the same size differs by several inches from one card to the next.

Orientation

A standard cabinet fires forward and stands on its base. A down-fire cabinet mounts the driver on the bottom baffle and sits on feet that set the floor clearance. A wedge is tapered on the rear panel so it leans flush against a seat back, which is what makes it the truck cabinet. This page carries standard and wedge builds; the filters narrow it.

Driver count

Single and dual cabinets are on this page. A dual is two drivers sharing one cabinet; the listing states the net volume, so on a dual check whether the figure is per chamber or for the whole box. Two smaller drivers in one cabinet is often the better answer than one larger driver where height is the limit.

A subsonic filter on the amplifier

Below its tuning a ported box stops loading the cone and excursion runs away. Set the amplifier's subsonic filter just under the tuning frequency stated on the listing. On a sealed build the same filter is an improvement; on a ported one it is a requirement.

What tuning frequency are these 15 inch boxes?

Each listing states its own, and across this page tuning runs 28 to 34.5 Hz. That is deliberate: a vehicle adds roughly 12 dB per octave below about 45 Hz, so tuning near the driver's own resonance keeps the cone quiet where the port is doing the work instead of doubling up on what the cabin already does.

How big is a ported 15 inch subwoofer box?

Net volume on this page runs 1.9 to 5 cubic feet for a single-driver cabinet, quoted for the box, and every listing states its own. A ported cabinet is larger than a sealed one for the same driver because the port needs volume of its own and the alignment wants more air behind the cone.
