How to Choose a Ported 10 Inch Enclosure

Start from the driver

Read the tuning, not just the volume

The tuning frequency tells you how the box will sound in the car; the volume only tells you how big it is. On this page tuning runs 31 to 40 Hz, and the lower end of that range is for drivers with a low free-air resonance, not for every driver.

Tuning by what you listen to

Genre is a shortcut for where your music's bass lives, and at 10 inches it also decides how much box you need.

• Hip-hop, trap and bass-heavy electronic music want the lowest-tuned 10s here, 31 to 33 Hz, to reach into the 808 range. Expect a bigger cabinet for it: the Kicker Solo X 10 X Series box at 31 Hz holds 2 cubic feet.
• Rock, metal and country favour the higher-tuned 10s, 36 to 40 Hz, which keep kick drum and bass guitar punchy and come in the smallest cabinets on the page.
• A mixed playlist is safest at 34 to 36 Hz, where most of this page sits.

A 10 will not reach as deep as a 12 at the same output, so if the playlist is mostly sub-bass and the space allows, compare the ported 12s as well. The subwoofer tuning calculator frames the same choice by build goal rather than by genre.

Ported or sealed

Ported gives more output around its tuning for the same power from a larger cabinet, and asks for a subsonic filter. If depth or height is the limit, the sealed 10 inch page usually wins. If the space is there and output per watt matters, this is the page.

Do not add polyfill

Every sealed cabinet we build ships with polyfill. These ship dry: damping material changes the volume the port is tuned against, so stuffing a ported box moves the tuning without shortening the port.
