INSTALLER'S TAKE

Trunk-load wedges are one of the oldest tricks in the SQ playbook, and they still work as well as they ever did. The idea is simple: mount the woofer on the vertical face that faces the trunk lid, angle the opposite face to match the lean of the rear seat back, and let the trunk cavity load the driver. Done right, you get smoother low-end integration into the cabin, a system that doesn't localize behind the listener, and a cabinet that tucks into the trunk shelf area without stealing usable cargo space.

For the IDQ12 V4 specifically, the wedge geometry solves a real problem. The IDQ12 wants 1.0 to 1.4 cubic feet sealed to hit its SQ-oriented Qtc target and deliver its published low-end extension. That's a big box. In most trunks, a rectangular 1.4 cubic foot cabinet occupies enough floor space to make the trunk essentially useless for anything else. The wedge tucks against the seat back where cargo can't fit anyway, and leaves the trunk floor space in front of the wedge actually useable.

The 8.75 inch top to 14.2 inch bottom depth difference on the seat-side face creates a 20 degree lean back from vertical — the same angle as most factory rear seat backrests within a couple degrees. When you push the wedge back against the rear seat, the angled seat-side face sits flush against the seat back with no wasted gap. The vertical trunk-lid-side face is where the woofer mounts, firing rearward toward the trunk lid.

Why fire the woofer rearward instead of into the cabin? Two reasons. First, it uses the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber — the trunk itself becomes part of the low-frequency reproduction path. Bass energy transmits into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and side boundaries rather than firing directly at the listener. The result is a smoother, less localized bass presentation. Second, it lets the wedge sit against the seat without any air path or firing obstruction on the front side of the box. If you tried to fire the woofer forward through the seat back, you'd need clearance in front of the driver, and the whole point of the wedge shape is that you don't have that clearance.

The 1.4 cubic foot gross volume works out to about 1.3 cubic feet net after the IDQ12's 0.1 cubic foot displacement. That sits between ID's compact and audiophile spec ranges, in the sweet spot for a driver you actually want to listen to. Compact volumes tighten the driver and dry out the presentation. Audiophile volumes loosen it up. 1.3 net is the balanced middle where the IDQ delivers what people bought it for.

Wiring is standard IDQ12. Dual 2 ohm gets you 1 ohm parallel or 4 ohms series. Dual 4 ohm gets you 2 ohms parallel or 8 ohms series. 300 to 400 watts RMS at your chosen impedance is the target. The IDQ is a driver that rewards a clean amp — regulated power supply, honest RMS ratings, low THD. Don't cheap out on the amplifier if you're spending money on the driver.

The IDQ12 V4 in a Trunk-Load Wedge

The Image Dynamics IDQ12 V4 is one of the most respected SQ 12" subwoofers on the market — a 375-watt RMS driver with 14.5mm linear Xmax, a 280 oz motor, and a field-replaceable cone assembly that has been used in sound quality competition for over a decade. The IDQ12 needs a properly sized sealed cabinet to deliver on its potential, and it needs one that actually fits in real trunks without eating the entire cargo bay.

The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 12 for IDQ is that cabinet. The wedge geometry has the woofer mounted on the vertical trunk-lid-side face, firing rearward into the trunk cavity. The angled face on the opposite side tucks against the rear seat back, matching the natural lean of most factory rear seats. Same driver-specific engineering as our rectangular PO enclosures, packaged in a shape that installs cleanly against the seat and uses the trunk cavity for acoustic loading.

Trunk-Load Wedge Design Explained

This wedge is not a front-firing enclosure. The woofer is mounted on the vertical face that sits at the back of the box, closest to the trunk lid, and fires rearward into the trunk cavity. The angled face is on the opposite side of the box — the side that faces the front of the vehicle — and tucks against the rear seat back. Two different problems solved by one geometry.

Seat-Side Face Matches Seat Lean

Most factory rear seat backs lean roughly 20 degrees back from vertical. The angled face of this wedge (8.75" at the top, 14.2" at the bottom) matches that lean, tucking against the seat back with no wasted gap. The wedge fills the trunk shelf area behind the seat cleanly.

Trunk-Lid-Side Face Fires the Woofer

The vertical face on the opposite side of the wedge (24" wide × 15" tall) is where the IDQ12 mounts. The driver fires rearward toward the trunk lid, using the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber. This is the classic SQ trunk-load install pattern.

Trunk Cavity Loading

Firing the woofer into the trunk cavity rather than directly into the cabin uses the trunk itself as an extension of the acoustic system. Low frequencies transmit into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and cabin boundaries — a smoother, less localized presentation than direct-firing setups.

Preserves Trunk Cargo Space

The wedge tucks against the seat back where cargo can't be stored anyway. The bottom face sits flat and stable on the trunk floor. Cargo space in front of the wedge (toward the trunk lid) stays usable for daily driving.

That's where the IDQ12's low-end extension characteristics fully develop and Qtc lands in the balanced range for musical accuracy.

Volume Selection

1.3 cubic feet net (1.4 gross) is above ID's compact spec but below the maximum audiophile spec — the middle-upper portion of the range where the IDQ12 delivers both extension and transient control. Smaller cabinets like 0.65 cubic feet tighten the response and dry out the low end. Larger cabinets like 1.8 push toward loose. 1.3 net is the balanced audiophile target.

Mounting Geometry

The vertical trunk-lid-side baffle is cut to the IDQ12 V4's exact 10.937" cutout specification. The IDQ12's 5.91" mounting depth fits comfortably inside the cabinet — clearance from the vertical baffle to the interior of the angled seat-side face ranges from 8.75" at the top to 14.2" at the bottom. 8/32 threaded inserts are pressed into the baffle backside for secure driver retention.

8/32 Threaded Inserts

Threaded inserts pressed into the vertical woofer baffle accept stainless steel mounting screws. No stripped pilot holes, no MDF damage from drywall screws, no surprises when the next driver upgrade rolls around.

Pre-Wired Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS/carbon fiber composite terminal cup, pre-wired with 12-gauge OFC inside the cabinet, with stainless steel hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations on the input side.

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. 200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.
