Cut for Deaf Bonce Apocalypse and Machete

Deaf Bonce build SPL motors, and their spec pages give you exactly four things to design a box from: free-air resonance, total Q, compliance volume and excursion. That is enough for a sealed alignment and nothing else, so every cabinet on this page is a sealed wedge, cut to the Butterworth volume of the driver's D2 coil and stating the other coil's Qtc beside it.

Apocalypse and Machete, in ten, twelve and fifteen inch, all CNC-cut in Tullahoma, Tennessee, and supplied bare for a driver you already own. We do not stock Deaf Bonce drivers, so there is no loaded option here.

Built to a Butterworth Alignment, Because Deaf Bonce Publish None

Most manufacturers print a recommended sealed volume and the argument is whether to trust it. Deaf Bonce print none. Their manuals recommend one bass-reflex box per driver size, the same figure across every series, and say nothing about sealing the driver. So the alignment here is ours: the net volume that puts the D2 coil at a system Qtc of 0.707, the maximally flat sealed response, computed from the Fs, Qts and Vas Deaf Bonce publish for that coil.

One cabinet serves both coil versions of a model. The D1 or D4 coil lands in the same box at a Qtc between 0.64 to 0.81, and every product page states both figures rather than averaging them. The SPL motors with the lowest Q sit at the dry end of that range; the Machete twelves with the softer suspensions sit at the punchy end.

Choosing Between Them

Start from the driver you own or intend to buy. Apocalypse or Machete is not a decision the box makes for you; it is the driver in your hands, and the cabinet follows it.

The big-compliance drivers hit the width cap

A Butterworth box for a Machete M10, M12, M12 Sport, M12 Super Sport, M12 Lite or M15 v2 Sport, or an Apocalypse DB-SA255, wants more air than a trunk wedge gives up in width, so those cabinets sit at our 29.5 inch single-driver cap with the volume taken up in depth. Measure the trunk opening before ordering one of them. The compact Apocalypse twelves and the Machete v2, MF and ML cabinets come in between 14 and 25 inches wide.

The coil version changes the wiring, not the box

Apocalypse drivers come as D1 or D2. A D1 gives 2 ohms in series or 0.5 ohm in parallel, and 0.5 ohm is beyond most amplifiers; a D2 gives 4 or 1. Machete drivers come as D2 or D4, so 4 or 1 ohm on the D2 and 8 or 2 on the D4. Run the coils in series unless the amplifier is rated stable at the parallel load.

What the page does not show

These cabinets have no Performance Graphs tab. That panel plots excursion against power from the cone area and electrical Q, which Deaf Bonce do not publish, so rather than plot a guess the tab is left off. Qtc, resonance and half-power frequency are on every product page; they need only what Deaf Bonce print.

Which Cabinet Fits Your Driver

Match the model first, because every cabinet is cut to one driver: its cutout, its mounting depth and the frame diameter off the dimension drawing in that driver's manual. Both coil versions of a model share all three, so a cabinet cut for the DB-SA2612 fits the D1 and the D2, and a cabinet cut for the M12 v2 fits the D2 and the D4.

Ten Machete manuals draw the cutout but not the frame, so on those cabinets the baffle recess is bounded at the cutout plus 1.5 inches, the widest flange overhang in the Machete line, and the product page says so. A driver never lands on an undersize recess.

The deep Apocalypse motors decide the shape of their cabinets. A DB-SA312, SA412 or SA415 carries more than ten inches of mounting depth, so its wedge is deeper at the base than it is tall. Measure the trunk floor before ordering one, and use the wedge box calculator if you want to check the geometry against your own seat lean. Frame Diameters Read Off the Drawings

Deaf Bonce publish no frame diameter as a number. Every Apocalypse, MFX, MS, ML-122 and plain Machete figure here was read off the dimension drawing in that driver's manual; the ten Machete models whose drawings show only the cutout are bounded at the cutout plus 1.5 inches, the widest overhang in the line, and their pages say so.

Displacement Is an Estimate on Every Cabinet

Deaf Bonce do not publish driver displacement. Each product page carries a stated estimate for its motor size, labelled as one, and only the gross volume depends on it. The net volume, the Qtc and the half-power frequency are computed from the published parameters alone.

Two Series, Three Sizes, One Kind of Cabinet

Apocalypse is the SPL line: the 25, 26, 27, 30, 31 and 41 series twelves and fifteens with the big ferrite stacks, rated 1000 to 3500 watts RMS. Machete is the everyday line, the M, MF, MFX, ML and MS families in ten, twelve and fifteen inch, rated 250 to 1300 watts. Both come here as a rear-firing sealed Performance Optimized wedge, and nothing else.

There is no ported cabinet on this page, and that is deliberate. Deaf Bonce publish Fs, Qts, Vas and Xmax but not the cone area or the electrical Q a vented design has to be checked against for excursion and port velocity, and we do not build to a number we cannot verify. The sealed alignment needs only what they print.

Deaf Bonce Subwoofer Box Questions

Which Deaf Bonce subwoofers do these boxes fit?

Apocalypse and Machete drivers in ten, twelve and fifteen inch, one cabinet per model. Each cabinet fits both coil versions of its driver, because the D1 and D2, or the D2 and D4, share a frame, a cutout and a mounting depth. The product page names the model it is cut for.

Do you sell Deaf Bonce subwoofers too?

No. We cut enclosures for them but we are not a Deaf Bonce dealer, so every cabinet here ships bare for a driver you already own or buy elsewhere. If the driver is still an open decision, the subwoofers we do stock are worth a look.

Why are these built to a Butterworth volume rather than Deaf Bonce's recommendation?

Because Deaf Bonce publish no sealed recommendation. Their manuals recommend one bass-reflex box per driver size, and nothing for a sealed build. A Butterworth alignment, Qtc 0.707, is the maximally flat sealed response, and it is computed from the free-air resonance, Q and compliance volume Deaf Bonce do publish, so it is the one alignment their own data supports.

Why is there no ported Deaf Bonce cabinet?

A vented design has to be checked for cone excursion and port velocity, and both checks need the cone area and the electrical Q of the driver. Deaf Bonce publish neither. We do not build a ported box to a number we cannot verify, so the line is sealed until that data exists.

What impedance will my amplifier see?

It depends on the coil version and how you wire it. An Apocalypse D1 gives 2 ohms in series or 0.5 ohm in parallel, and 0.5 ohm is beyond most amplifiers. A D2 gives 4 or 1. A Machete D4 gives 8 or 2. Run the coils in series unless the amplifier is rated stable at the parallel load.

Why is the fifteen inch cabinet deeper than it is tall?

Because the driver is. An Apocalypse DB-SA415 needs almost twelve inches of mounting depth and its magnet is wider than its own cutout, so the wedge has to clear that motor at the top of the cavity where it is shallowest. The cabinet keeps the same seat-back taper and grows in depth rather than height. Measure the trunk floor before ordering.
