Most subwoofers sold as "great in a sealed box" were never measured against the box you can actually fit. A sealed enclosure works because the trapped air acts as a spring in parallel with the driver's own suspension. The smaller the box, the stiffer that spring, and the higher the system Q climbs. So the honest question is not which subwoofer sounds best. It is which subwoofer lands a controlled alignment in the airspace your vehicle has left over.
This guide covers the sealed-capable drivers we stock at Audio Intensity, with the Thiele/Small parameters off the manufacturer spec sheets, the exact Proline X enclosure we build for each one, and the resulting system Qtc and F3 in that specific box. Every alignment figure below is computed from the published T/S against the measured net airspace of the cabinet, not estimated from a recommended range.
Two of the picks, the Stereo Integrity SQL 12 S2 and SQL 15 S2, are new to us. We became an authorized Stereo Integrity dealer and both drivers are now listed, but the first shipment is still in transit, so their pages read as sold out until it lands. They are in here because the numbers put them at the top of the list, not because they are new.
What makes a subwoofer good in a sealed box?
Two published parameters decide it. Qts is the driver's total Q at resonance, which is how heavily its own motor and suspension damp the cone. Vas is the volume of air whose springiness equals that suspension, so it tells you how much box the driver wants. A sealed box raises both the resonance and the Q, and the arithmetic is short:
alpha = Vas / Vb
Qtc = Qts Γ sqrt(alpha + 1)
Fc = Fs Γ sqrt(alpha + 1)
Vb is the net internal airspace of the cabinet. Because the square root term is always greater than one, Qtc is always higher than Qts, and it only rises as the box gets smaller. That single fact does most of the sorting. A driver with Qts of 0.50 can be put anywhere from a very damped alignment to a peaky one depending on the box. A driver with Qts of 0.80 is already past the textbook target before it is in any box at all, and no enclosure will bring it back down.
The usual target is Qtc near 0.707, the maximally flat alignment, which gives the cleanest transient behaviour and the fastest stop. In a car we will take a little more, up to roughly 0.85, because cabin gain lifts the bottom octave anyway and a slightly firmer alignment keeps the midbass from smearing. Above about 1.0 the response develops a hump around Fc and the bass starts sounding like one note at one level.
Run those numbers across our catalogue and the spread is the story. The airspace needed to hit Qtc 0.707 ranges from 0.71 ft3 for the Wavtech thinPRO10 to 9.21 ft3 for the IDMAX12 V.4 D2, and several drivers cannot reach it in any box. Best 10 inch subwoofers for a sealed box
The 10 inch class is where sealed makes the most sense, because a 10 with a small Vas gives up almost nothing to a 12 once both are in boxes that fit the same trunk. Three of the drivers we stock land genuinely usable sealed alignments, and each one solves a different constraint.
Wavtech thinPRO10: the smallest sealed box that still works
Fs 31 to 32 Hz, Qts 0.52 to 0.55, Vas 17 L, Xmax 20 mm, 750 W RMS, and a mounting depth of 2.875 inches. That Vas is the lowest of any 10 inch driver here, and it is why the thinPRO10 tolerates a box no other 10 will accept. In our Micro Series M10-S sealed enclosure at 0.40 ft3 net it lands Qtc 0.82 to 0.87 with F3 between 41.5 and 44.5 Hz anechoic.
That is a firm alignment rather than a flat one, but it is firm on purpose. Behind a truck seat there is no version of this that gets to 0.707, and 20 mm of one-way travel on 750 W means it makes up in output what the alignment costs in extension. Pick it when depth is the binding constraint. The thinPRO10 driver and the box are both in stock.
JL Audio 10TW3-D4: the flattest small-box 10
Fs 32.3 Hz, Qts 0.620, Vas 19.82 L, Xmax 15.2 mm, 400 W RMS, and 3.25 inches of mounting depth. JL specifies 0.50 ft3 sealed and we built the Performance Optimized sealed wedge to exactly that figure, net. The result is Qtc 0.960 with Fc at 50 Hz and F3 at 40.1 Hz.
To get the 10TW3 to a textbook 0.707 you would need 2.33 ft3, which is a ported-box footprint for a driver whose whole point is that it fits where nothing else does. This is the trade the TW3 was designed around, and it is the most linear shallow 10 we install. Buy the 10TW3-D4 when you want a small sealed box that stays composed at volume rather than one that goes deepest.
Image Dynamics IDMAX10 V.4: the deepest 10 in a small box
Fs 27 Hz, Qts 0.609 (D2) or 0.661 (D4), Vas 37.18 L, Xmax 19 mm, 500 W RMS, and 7.68 inches of mounting depth. In our Performance Optimized sealed wedge at 0.75 ft3 it runs Qtc 1.01 to 1.05 with F3 between 33 and 35 Hz.
F3 in the mid thirties out of three quarters of a cubic foot is the lowest extension per unit of airspace of anything in this guide, and it comes from that 27 Hz free-air resonance. The cost is honest: Qtc above 1.0 means a mild lift around 45 Hz rather than a flat passband. Image Dynamics' own owner's manual recommends a sealed enclosure for optimum performance on the IDMAX, and this is the alignment their compact tier produces. Take the IDMAX10 V.4 when extension matters more than a ruler-flat response, and check your mounting depth first, because 7.68 inches rules out most behind-seat locations.
Also stocked, with a caveat: Image Dynamics IDQ10 V.4
The IDQ10 V.4 is the value 10 in the range at 250 W RMS and 5.81 inches deep, and we build a 1.00 ft3 sealed wedge for it. The caveat belongs in the open: its Qts is 0.797 to 0.868, which is already above 0.707, so no sealed box can give it a flat alignment. In that 1.00 ft3 cabinet it sits at Qtc 1.09 to 1.15 with F3 near 42 Hz. It is a good driver at its price and it is perfectly listenable, but if a damped sealed alignment is the goal, the three above get there and this one does not.
Best 12 inch subwoofer for a sealed box: Stereo Integrity SQL 12 S2
Fs 34.1 Hz, Qts 0.570, Vas 22.5 L, Sd 532.3 cm2, Xmax 26 mm one way, 1000 W RMS, and 7.000 inches of mounting depth. In our Performance Optimized sealed wedge at 1.00 ft3 net it lands Qtc 0.764, Fc 45.7 Hz, F3 42.6 Hz anechoic. That is the best damped sealed alignment of any driver in this guide, in a cabinet 20.70 inches wide that leans against a rear seat back.
What makes it work is the combination almost nothing else in the 12 inch class has: a moderate Qts of 0.570 paired with a Vas of only 22.5 L. Compare that to the IDMAX12 V.4, which is an excellent driver with a Vas of 71.89 L, more than three times as much. The SQL 12 reaches a textbook Qtc 0.707 in 1.48 ft3; the IDMAX12 D2 would need 9.21 ft3 and the D4 cannot get there at all. A stiff suspension is what buys you a small sealed box, and this driver has one.
The 26 mm of one-way travel is the other half. In that 1.00 ft3 box the cone does not reach its excursion limit until about 2,555 W with no filter, well above the 1000 W it can take thermally, so the voice coil gives out before the suspension does. Add a 25 Hz subsonic filter at 24 dB per octave and the same travel limit moves out to roughly 3,240 W. In practice that means you can run it hard on its rated power without watching the cone.
Availability. The SQL 12 S2 is listed in dual 2 ohm and dual 4 ohm, with a paper or a carbon fibre dust cap. The first shipment has not landed yet, so the page shows sold out until it does. Best 15 inch subwoofer for a sealed box: Stereo Integrity SQL 15 S2
Fs 33 Hz, Qts 0.570, Vas 59.4 L, Sd 823.2 cm2, Xmax 26 mm, 1000 W RMS, and 7.400 inches of mounting depth. In our Performance Optimized sealed wedge at 2.00 ft3 net it runs Qtc 0.816, Fc 47.2 Hz, F3 41.8 Hz. It is the only 15 inch driver we carry that reaches a properly damped sealed alignment in a cabinet that still fits a car.
Fifteens are where high Qts drivers cluster, because a big cone on a soft suspension is the cheap way to make a 15 sound impressive on a showroom floor. The SQL 15 keeps the same 0.570 Qts as its 12 inch sibling, so it behaves the same way in a box, just with 55 percent more cone area behind it. At 2.00 ft3 the cabinet is 29.16 inches wide and 18 inches tall at the seat face, which is a real trunk install rather than a theoretical one. The dual 15 at 4.00 ft3 exists for cargo bays.
The contrast worth understanding is the Image Dynamics IDMAX15 V.4, which we do stock. Its published Qts is 0.952 for the D2 and 1.022 for the D4. Both are above 0.707, so this driver cannot produce a flat sealed alignment in any enclosure ever built. In our 1.75 ft3 sealed wedge it lands Qtc 1.52 to 1.68, with F3 around 33 Hz. That is a deliberately voiced driver with a pronounced lift through the upper bass, and plenty of people want exactly that. It is simply not the same instrument as a 0.816 alignment, and a roundup that lists both without saying so is not telling you anything useful.
The SQL 15 S2 is listed on the same terms as the SQL 12, in dual 2 and dual 4 ohm with a paper or a carbon fibre dust cap, and shows sold out until that same first shipment lands. The enclosures are in stock.
Does an 8 inch subwoofer work in a sealed box?
An 8 inch sealed build is midbass reinforcement, not bass extension, and the numbers say so plainly. The Image Dynamics IDQ8 V.4 publishes Fs 51 Hz, Qts 0.807, Vas 6.66 L and 125 W RMS in 4.92 inches of depth. In our P8-S sealed enclosure at 0.45 ft3 it comes out at Qtc 1.00 with F3 near 49 Hz.
That 51 Hz resonance is the limiter, not the box. No sealed enclosure moves an Fs of 51 Hz downward, it only moves it up. Use a sealed 8 where the factory speakers run out of authority around 60 to 80 Hz and you want the low end tightened rather than extended, or run a pair. If you need it to go low in that footprint, a ported 8 or a shallow 10 is the better answer; the 8 inch enclosure guide covers both.

Where two values appear, the first is the dual 2 ohm coil and the second the dual 4 ohm. Every enclosure listed is a stock Proline X SKU, and the full range sits in sealed subwoofer boxes, split by size into sealed 10 inch boxes, sealed 12 inch boxes and sealed 15 inch boxes.
What separates a good sealed build from a competent one
Picking the driver is the part everyone argues about and the part that matters least once the alignment is right. Four things decide the rest, and we see all four go wrong in cars that came from somewhere else.
Net volume, not gross
Every Qtc figure above is computed against net acoustic airspace, which is the gross internal volume minus bracing, minus the polyfill lining, minus the driver's own displacement. A 1.16 ft3 gross cabinet is a 1.00 ft3 box acoustically. Our cabinets are stamped inside with the gross figure and the product page publishes the net one, and modelling against the wrong one is how a 0.76 alignment quietly becomes a 0.85.
A flexing baffle undoes the box
A subwoofer pushes as hard against its mounting surface as it does against the air. A single sheet of 3/4 inch MDF flexes under a 26 mm driver, and every millimetre the baffle moves is a millimetre the cone did not. The Performance Optimized cabinets use two bonded sheets, 1.5 inches through, with a windowed C brace and threaded inserts rather than wood screws so the driver can come out and go back without chewing the panel. Do not add polyfill to a box that already has it
Stuffing a sealed box makes it behave as though it were larger, which lowers Qtc. That is useful when you are trying to rescue an undersized enclosure and counterproductive when the volume was already chosen to land a specific alignment. Our sealed cabinets ship with a light wall lining whose quantity is set so it does not change the acoustic volume. Adding more moves the alignment away from the figure on the page.
Sealed still wants a subsonic filter
A sealed box rolls off at 12 dB per octave below Fc, which protects the cone far better than a ported box does, so the filter is optional in a way it is not with a port. It still buys headroom. On the SQL 12 in 1.00 ft3, a 25 Hz subsonic at 24 dB per octave moves the excursion limit from about 2,555 W to about 3,240 W, because the cone stops spending travel on content below the passband. That is roughly 27 percent more usable amplifier for one filter setting.
Frequently asked questions
What Qts is best for a sealed box?
Between roughly 0.35 and 0.65. That range gives you room to land Qtc near 0.707 in a box that fits a vehicle. Above 0.707 the driver is already past the flat target before it is in any enclosure, because a sealed box only raises Q. The SQL 12 and SQL 15 sit at 0.570, which is close to the middle of the useful band.
Is a 10 or a 12 inch subwoofer better in a sealed box?
Neither, on diameter alone. Vas decides it. The JL 10TW3 reaches a usable alignment in 0.50 ft3 while the IDMAX12 V.4 would need 9.21 ft3 to reach a flat one, so the 10 is the better sealed driver in almost any car even though the 12 has more cone. Compare the Vas figures of the two drivers you are choosing between before you compare their sizes.
How much power does a sealed subwoofer need?
More than the same driver in a ported box, because sealed trades about 3 dB of efficiency at the bottom for control. Match the amplifier to the driver's continuous rating at the impedance you actually wire, then set the gain by ear at the amplifier rather than at the head unit. A dual 2 ohm coil gives 4 ohms in series or 1 ohm in parallel; a dual 4 ohm gives 8 or 2.
Will a sealed box go deep enough without a port?
In a car, usually yes. Every F3 in the table above is anechoic, measured as though the box were in free space. A vehicle cabin adds real output below roughly 50 Hz, so a 42 Hz anechoic F3 typically plays flat well into the thirties once it is installed. That cabin gain is also why a sealed alignment slightly firmer than 0.707 often measures better in the car than on paper.
Can I put any subwoofer in a sealed box?
Mechanically yes, musically no. A driver designed around a port, typically with a high Fs, a low Qts and a large Vas, will play in a sealed box but give up a lot of its output. Run the parameters first. If the volume needed for Qtc 0.707 is larger than the space you have, you are choosing between a firmer alignment and a different driver, and it is better to know that before the box is cut.
Where to start
Measure the space first, then pick the driver that fits it. If you have less than half a cubic foot and under four inches of depth, the Wavtech thinPRO10 or the JL 10TW3-D4 are the two that work. If you have three quarters of a cubic foot and real depth, the IDMAX10 V.4 gives the deepest extension per cubic foot in this guide.
