Trunk-load wedges are one of the oldest tricks in the SQ playbook, and they still work as well as they ever did. The idea is simple: mount the woofer on the vertical face that faces the trunk lid, angle the opposite face to match the lean of the rear seat back, and let the trunk cavity load the driver. Done right, you get smoother low-end integration into the cabin, a system that doesn't localize behind the listener, and a cabinet that tucks into the trunk shelf area without stealing usable cargo space.

For the IDQ10 V4 specifically, this cabinet is a great fit. Image Dynamics publishes three sealed alignments: 0.60 Compact, 1.10 Universal, and 1.60 Audiophile. The 1.0 cubic foot volume in this wedge lands between Compact and Universal, dialed closer to Universal so you get most of the low-end reach that alignment delivers while keeping the tighter Qtc and slightly higher power handling that comes from a somewhat smaller cabinet. Approximately 350 watts maximum in this alignment. Not the deepest possible IDQ10 build, but the best balance of extension, control, and power handling for a single-driver system.

The geometry is what makes this design work in real vehicles. The 8.4 inch top to 13.5 inch bottom depth difference on the seat-side face creates a 20 degree lean back from vertical — the same angle as most factory rear seat backrests within a couple degrees. When you push the wedge back against the rear seat, the angled seat-side face sits flush against the seat back, with no wasted gap eating trunk space. The vertical trunk-lid-side face is where the woofer mounts, firing rearward toward the trunk lid.

Why fire the woofer rearward instead of into the cabin? Two reasons. First, it uses the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber — the trunk itself becomes part of the low-frequency reproduction path. Bass energy transmits into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and side boundaries rather than firing directly at the listener. The result is a smoother, less localized bass presentation. Second, it lets the wedge sit against the seat without any air path or firing obstruction on the front side of the box. If you tried to fire the woofer forward through the seat back, you'd need clearance in front of the driver, and the whole point of the wedge shape is that you don't have that clearance.

The 20 x 14 footprint is the same as our rectangular PO 10-S IDQ box. Same trunk floor real estate, but the wedge shape effectively preserves more usable cargo space because the top portion of the wedge is hidden behind the rear seat.

Wiring is standard IDQ10. Dual 2 ohm gets you 1 ohm parallel or 4 ohms series. Dual 4 ohm gets you 2 ohms parallel or 8 ohms series. 250 to 350 watts RMS at your chosen impedance is the target. Don't cheap out on the amp — the IDQ is a driver that rewards clean power.

If you're building an SQ-oriented single 10 system in a trunk and you want the smoother acoustic loading that a trunk-fired wedge delivers, this is the answer.

Performance Optimized Wedge | Image Dynamics IDQ 10

Single 10" Sealed Wedge Enclosure | Rear-Firing Trunk-Load Design for the IDQ10 V4

1.0 ft³ Airspace Rear-Firing Wedge Driver-Specific 20" × 14" × 8.4/13.5" V-Groove / Dado Built in Tennessee

The IDQ10 V4 in a Trunk-Load Wedge

The Image Dynamics IDQ10 V4 is the reference-standard SQ 10" subwoofer — 250 watts RMS nominal power handling, 14.5mm linear Xmax, a 180 oz Extended Y-35 motor, and a field-replaceable cone assembly that has been used in sound quality competition for over a decade. The IDQ10 needs a properly sized sealed cabinet to deliver on its potential, and it needs one that actually fits in real trunks without eating the entire cargo bay.

The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 10 for IDQ is that cabinet. The wedge geometry has the woofer mounted on the vertical trunk-lid-side face, firing rearward into the trunk cavity. The angled face on the opposite side tucks against the rear seat back, matching the natural lean of most factory rear seats. Same driver-specific engineering as our rectangular PO enclosures, packaged in a shape that installs cleanly against the seat and uses the trunk cavity for acoustic loading.

1.0 cubic feet of internal airspace — sitting between Image Dynamics' 0.60 cu ft Compact and 1.10 cu ft Universal sealed alignments for the IDQ10 V4. Tuned for tight, controlled response with strong low-end extension and 350 watts of maximum power handling in this alignment.

Trunk-Load Wedge Design Explained

This wedge is not a front-firing enclosure. The woofer is mounted on the vertical face that sits at the back of the box, closest to the trunk lid, and fires rearward into the trunk cavity. The angled face is on the opposite side of the box — the side that faces the front of the vehicle — and tucks against the rear seat back. Two different problems solved by one geometry.

Seat-Side Face Matches Seat Lean

Most factory rear seat backs lean roughly 20 degrees back from vertical. The angled face of this wedge (8.4" at the top, 13.5" at the bottom) matches that lean, tucking against the seat back with no wasted gap. The wedge fills the trunk shelf area behind the seat cleanly.

Trunk-Lid-Side Face Fires the Woofer

The vertical face on the opposite side of the wedge (20" wide × 14" tall) is where the IDQ10 mounts. The driver fires rearward toward the trunk lid, using the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber. This is the classic SQ trunk-load install pattern.

Trunk Cavity Loading

Firing the woofer into the trunk cavity rather than directly into the cabin uses the trunk itself as an extension of the acoustic system. Low frequencies transmit into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and cabin boundaries — a smoother, less localized presentation than direct-firing setups.

Preserves Trunk Cargo Space

The wedge tucks against the seat back where cargo can't be stored anyway. The bottom face sits flat and stable on the trunk floor. Cargo space in front of the wedge (toward the trunk lid) stays usable for daily driving.

Engineered Around the IDQ10 V4's Parameters

Image Dynamics specifies the IDQ10 V4 across three sealed alignments: 0.60 cubic feet (Compact, 450 watts max), 1.10 cubic feet (Universal, 350 watts max), and 1.60 cubic feet (Audiophile, 250 watts max). The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 10 delivers 1.0 cubic feet of airspace — sitting between Compact and Universal, dialed toward the tighter, more controlled side of the IDQ's response range while still delivering meaningful low-end extension.

Volume Selection

1.0 cubic feet is the sweet spot for an IDQ10 V4 build that wants transient tightness without giving up too much low-end weight. Below 0.60 cubic feet the driver overdamps and dries out. Above 1.10 the response loosens and midbass tightness starts to soften. 1.0 cubic feet delivers a Qtc landing near the SQ target with maximum power handling of approximately 350 watts in this alignment.

Mounting Geometry

The vertical trunk-lid-side baffle is cut to the IDQ10 V4's exact 9.57" cutout specification. The IDQ10's 5.81" mounting depth fits comfortably inside the cabinet — clearance from the vertical baffle to the interior of the angled seat-side face ranges from 8.4" at the top to 13.5" at the bottom. 8/32 threaded inserts are pressed into the baffle backside for secure driver retention.

Performance Series Construction, Driver-Specific Tuning

Langboard Elite MDF

Premium 3/4" MDF panels milled to documented spec — denser and more dimensionally stable than commodity MDF. Less panel resonance, tighter joints, and a longer service life under daily use at real power levels.

V-Groove and Dado Joinery

CNC-cut V-grooves at every panel intersection let the wedge cabinet fold into its angled shape with maximum glue surface. Dado joints lock the vertical woofer baffle and the angled seat-side panel into the side walls — no fasteners visible from outside, no exposed end grain at joints.

8/32 Threaded Inserts

Threaded inserts pressed into the vertical woofer baffle accept stainless steel mounting screws. No stripped pilot holes, no MDF damage from drywall screws, no surprises when the next driver upgrade rolls around.

Pre-Wired Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS/carbon fiber composite terminal cup, pre-wired with 12-gauge OFC inside the cabinet, with stainless steel hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations on the input side.

Every panel is cut on ShopSabre CNC routers in our Tullahoma, TN facility. The angled seat-side panel requires precise CNC compound cuts to hit both the volume target and the mating angles between the top and bottom edges — tolerances that manual fabrication can't reliably hold. Internal volume is verified on every unit.

Customize Your Build

Carpet Finish

Dark Gray Trunkliner is the standard durable wrap, matched to most factory trunk and cargo-area carpet tones. Plush Black (+$10) is a deeper, more luxurious nap that pairs well with blacked-out interiors and show builds.

Acrylic Insert Color

Choose Black, Blue, Red, or White for the baffle insert to match your build. Or skip the insert entirely (-$40) for a clean, understated look. The insert is purely cosmetic — performance is identical across colors.

Box-Only or Loaded

Add a Dual 2-ohm or Dual 4-ohm Image Dynamics IDQ10 V4 driver directly to your order and we'll ship the complete loaded system, ready to wire to your amplifier. Already own your IDQ10? Order the enclosure box-only and drop in the driver you have.

Wiring the IDQ10 V4 to Your Amplifier

The Image Dynamics IDQ10 V4 is a dual voice coil driver available in Dual 2-ohm (D2) or Dual 4-ohm (D4) configurations. The pre-wired terminal cup accepts either impedance version via 12-gauge OFC, with stainless steel input hardware.

A Dual 2-ohm IDQ10 wired in parallel presents a 1-ohm load. A Dual 2-ohm wired in series presents 4 ohms. A Dual 4-ohm IDQ10 wired in parallel presents 2 ohms, and wired in series presents 8 ohms. The IDQ10 V4 nominal power rating is 250 watts RMS, with maximum power handling of approximately 350 watts in this 1.0 cubic foot alignment. Aim for a clean, well-regulated amplifier delivering 250 to 350 watts at your chosen impedance. The IDQ rewards clean power, not headline peak numbers.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements — and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
