Subwoofer Box for Truck: Which Fits Your Cab? (2026)

Key Takeaways

  • Cab type picks your box before sub size does. A 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab has 44.8" of rear legroom, a Quad Cab 35.3" (Ram).
  • Measure with the seat in use. Seat travel, not floor space, is what stops most boxes.
  • In most cabs, a small sealed box with a shallow 10 or 12 is the right call.
  • We build direct-fit boxes for Ford only. Ram and Silverado owners should measure, then choose a universal shallow or down-fire box.

The right subwoofer box for a truck depends on cab type first and sub size second. Crew cabs have room under or behind the rear seat. Extended cabs need a shallow box under or behind a short bench. Single cabs usually take a thin wedge behind the seat. Whatever you drive, measure with the seat in its real position before you buy, because seat travel is what stops most boxes.

Ford's F-Series was America's best-selling truck for the 49th straight year in 2025, with 828,832 sold (Ford, 2026). Add Ram and Silverado, and that's a lot of trucks getting subs. Nearly every owner asks the same first question: what box fits? Shopping results show hundreds of "truck boxes" with almost no fit guidance, and the wrong one keeps the seat from latching.

This guide covers where a box can go in each cab, how to measure, and which box type fits. We build direct-fit boxes for Ford trucks only, so for Ram and Silverado we'll name the brands that make them and the universal boxes that work once you've measured. It's about boxes, not drivers. For driver size, see subwoofer size by vehicle type.

Where can a subwoofer box go in a truck?

There are four places: behind the seat back, under the rear seat, flat on the floor firing down, or in the bed. Cab type decides which ones you actually have. Down-fire boxes can be very short. Kicker's 48TRTP122 loaded 12 stands 6-1/8" tall, and Kicker says it fits "under your truck seat or in the trunk" (Kicker).

  • Behind the seat: works in every cab type, as long as the seat back tilts forward. Wedges and vehicle-specific boxes live here. Depth is the limit, so plan on a shallow-mount driver.
  • Under the rear seat: crew cabs, plus some extended cabs with a flip-up bench. It holds the most air, but it often costs you the factory storage bin.
  • Down-fire on the rear floor: crew cabs and some extended cabs. The driver fires into the floor, so the cabinet stays short. The Kicker box above is 27-1/2" wide and 14-5/8" deep, rated 500W RMS and tuned to 35 Hz.
  • In the bed: the last resort. You're fighting weather, theft, and a sealed cab wall between you and the sub. We steer people away from it.
Cab type Behind seat Under rear seat Down-fire floor Bed

Editorial guide from Audio Intensity, not measured data. Confirm your own truck with the five measurements below.

Here's the part most listings skip: seat travel, not floor space, is the real limit. A box has to clear the seat at full recline and when it folds. That's why JL Audio sells two different Stealthboxes for the 2019-up Ram 1500 Crew Cab. Trucks with reclining rear seats or storage trays must use the dual 10TW3 version, and the dual 12TW3 version is for fixed seats only (Garmin/JL Audio).

A truck subwoofer box can go behind the seat, under the rear seat, on the rear floor firing down, or in the bed, and cab type decides which spots exist. Down-fire boxes stay short: Kicker's 48TRTP122 loaded 12 is 6-1/8" tall and built to fit under a truck seat (Kicker).

Which subwoofer box fits a single cab truck?

A single cab has no rear seat, so the only real space is the strip behind the seat back. Ford and Chevy list rear legroom as N/A for regular cabs (JC Lewis Ford; Cable Dahmer Chevrolet). The 2025 Ram 1500 isn't sold as a regular cab at all (Ram). That leaves a thin wedge or slim sealed box with a shallow 8 or 10.

Measure with the seat all the way back and reclined to the angle you actually drive at. Because the seat back leans rearward, the gap is usually deeper at the floor than at the top. That's exactly the shape a wedge is built for. Our Performance Optimized wedge for the JL 10TW3 is 23" wide and 13" tall, 9.25" deep at the base and 4.5" at the top, with 0.50 ft³ net.

If the space is more even top to bottom, a slim rectangular box works. The Proline X Micro Series box for the 10TW3 is 21.5" x 14.5" x 5.25" with 0.5 ft³. You can check your own wedge numbers with our wedge box calculator before you order anything.

So can you put subs in a single cab truck? Yes, but the driver matters more than the box here. A sub with a deep motor won't clear, no matter how the box is shaped. Start with shallow-mount subwoofers by size, then pick the box. Expect tight, clean bass rather than competition SPL. In a cab this small, that's usually what sounds best anyway.

In a single cab truck, the only usable sub space is behind the seat back, so the box must be thin. A wedge suits the tapering gap: the Proline X Performance Optimized wedge for the JL 10TW3 narrows to 4.5" deep at the top and holds 0.50 ft³ net (Audio Intensity product specs).

Which box fits an extended cab (SuperCab, Double Cab, Quad Cab)?

Extended cabs have a short rear bench and only about 33 to 35 inches of rear legroom: 33.5" in a 2025 F-150 SuperCab (JC Lewis Ford), 35.24" in a 2026 Silverado Double Cab (Cable Dahmer Chevrolet), and 35.3" in a 2025 Ram 1500 Quad Cab (Ram). A box under or behind that bench has to be shallow.

Legroom isn't box space, but it's the best published number for comparing how much cab sits behind the front seats. Across all three brands, the extended cab gives up about 8 to 10 inches against the crew cab. That's a shorter rear row, a smaller bench, and less room around it for a box.

If your rear bench flips up, look under it first. If it doesn't, go behind it. Either way, think dual shallow 10s or a single shallow 12, not a pair of deep 12s. Ported boxes rarely fit here, because the port needs area and volume the cab doesn't have. Our guide to ported vs sealed in a truck covers the trade-off in detail.

Watch the fitment fine print, too. Some direct-fit boxes skip extended cabs entirely. Skar's dual 12 down-firing box for the 2019-2026 Silverado and Sierra 1500 is listed for Crew Cab only, not Double Cab (Skar Audio).

Extended cab pickups have about 33 to 35 inches of rear legroom, about 8 to 10 inches less than crew cabs: 33.5" in an F-150 SuperCab, 35.24" in a Silverado Double Cab and 35.3" in a Ram 1500 Quad Cab (Ford dealer, Chevy dealer and Ram specs). That forces shallow, usually sealed, sub boxes.

Should a crew cab get an under-seat or behind-seat box?

Crew cabs have the most room, 43.4 to 44.8 inches of rear legroom in the Silverado, F-150 and Ram, so you get a real choice. Under-seat boxes hold more air but often cost the storage bin. AudioControl's TXRM02D10 for Ram notes plainly that "Under seat storage must be removed" (AudioControl). Behind-seat boxes keep it.

That AudioControl box is a good picture of what under-seat looks like: a sealed dual 10 rated 800W RMS, 57.87" wide, 13.44" deep and only 9.93" tall, for 2002-2025 Ram Quad and Crew Cabs. On the other side, our 2015-2023 F-150 behind-seat box leaves the under-seat storage usable. Which matters more to you, air or storage?

Location Airspace Storage Watch for Example
Under rear seat Most Often lost Seat fold, possible seat lift Encore 15 box for F-150: 1.6 ft³, needs a 2.5" seat lift
Behind seat 0.5 to 0.6 ft³ per 10" Kept Driver mounting depth Dual-10 F-150 box: 3.7" max mounting depth
Down-fire floor 0.60 to 1.00 ft³ Kept Foot room, cabinet height P12-S DF: 6.75" tall, 1.00 ft³

Check seat recline and fold before anything else. The JL Ram Stealthbox split shows why: reclining seats and storage trays rule out the 12TW3 version, so those trucks get the dual 10TW3 instead (Garmin/JL Audio). If the box blocks the seat, it doesn't fit, no matter what the floor tape says.

The universal crew-cab option is a down-fire box on the rear floor. It keeps the storage, doesn't touch the seat, and moves between trucks when you trade. Browse our down-fire subwoofer boxes, and see single or dual down-fire sizing if you're deciding between one sub and two.

In a crew cab, under-seat sub boxes hold more air but often remove factory storage: AudioControl's sealed dual-10 TXRM02D10 for Ram notes "Under seat storage must be removed" (AudioControl). Behind-seat boxes trade airspace for storage, giving about 0.5 to 0.6 ft³ per 10" sub in Proline X Ford designs.

How do you measure your truck for a subwoofer box?

Measure the space with the seat in its real use position, not the empty floor. You need five numbers: height, width, depth at the floor, depth at the top, and the sub's mounting depth plus 1/2 inch. Then compare them with the box's outside dimensions. Our P12-S DF, for example, is 6.75" tall but takes a driver up to 6" deep (Audio Intensity product specs).

  1. Set the seat. Put the front seat in your normal driving position and recline. For a rear bench, check it both folded and unfolded.
  2. Measure usable width. Go between the trim panels or seat-belt anchors, not wall to wall. Note the jack, any factory amp or sub, and storage bins.
  3. Measure height. Go from the floor to the seat bottom for under-seat, or to the top of the seat back for behind-seat.
  4. Measure depth twice. Take it at the floor and again at the top. If the top number is smaller, you want a wedge.
  5. Check the driver. Compare your space with the box's external dimensions, and the sub's mounting depth with the box's limit. Our P10-S DF takes up to 4.75" of driver depth; the P12-S DF takes 6".
  6. Check the airspace. Run the inside dimensions through our sealed box calculator and confirm it lands close to the driver's recommended sealed volume.

Don't forget feet and carpet. A down-fire box needs clearance under it for the driver to breathe, so our P10-S DF goes from 5.5" to 7.25" tall with feet, and the P12-S DF from 6.75" to 8.5". Thick factory carpet or a floor liner can eat another half inch. Measure from the surface the box will actually sit on.

The easiest mistake to make is in step one. It's tempting to measure the empty cab with the seat pushed forward. The box fits on paper, and then the seat won't go back to where you drive. Write all five numbers down before you shop, and you'll rule out most wrong boxes in a minute.

To measure a truck for a subwoofer box, set the seat where you drive it, then record height, usable width, depth at the floor, depth at the top, and the sub's mounting depth plus 1/2 inch. Compare against external box dimensions: the Proline X P12-S DF is 29.5" x 14.5" x 6.75" and accepts a 6" deep driver (Audio Intensity specs).

Which subwoofer box fits a Ford F-150 or Super Duty?

Ford is the one truck we build direct-fit boxes for. The core design is a sealed single 10 behind the passenger-side rear seat, with 0.5 ft³ for the 2015-2023 F-150 and 2017-2023 F-250, or 0.6 ft³ for the 2024-2026 F-150, F-250 and F-350 (Audio Intensity product specs). With F-Series sales at 828,832 in 2025 (Ford), it's also the best-selling truck in America.

The two generations aren't interchangeable. Ford moved the factory amplifier and subwoofer for 2024, so a 2015-2023 box won't fit a 2024 truck. The 2015-2023 install relocates the OEM jack and satellite module, trims the rear panel, and removes the factory sub if equipped. Under-seat storage stays usable. Here's what changed in the 2024 F-150 behind-seat fit.

There are a few variations. The dual 10 version holds 1.0 ft³ split into two 0.5 ft³ chambers and takes a driver up to 3.7" deep. The PR Edition adds a rear-firing 12" passive radiator tuned to 34 Hz. Most come loaded or empty. Compare them in our F-150 and F-250 behind-seat subwoofer boxes, or see every Super Duty and Maverick fitment in our Ford truck subwoofer enclosures.

Proline X direct-fit Ford boxes mount a sealed 10" sub behind the passenger-side rear seat, with 0.5 ft³ for 2015-2023 F-150 and 2017-2023 F-250, or 0.6 ft³ for 2024-2026 F-150, F-250 and F-350. Ford moved the factory amp and sub for 2024, so the two box generations don't interchange (Audio Intensity product specs).

What about Ram 1500 and Silverado subwoofer boxes?

We don't make direct-fit boxes for Ram, Silverado or Sierra, Tundra or Titan. Other brands do make them for Ram and GM trucks, and they're listed below on merit, with no affiliate links. The priciest is JL Audio's Stealthbox for the 2019-up Ram 1500 Crew Cab, at $2,099.99 to $2,199.99 depending on version (Garmin/JL Audio).

List prices and fitments from each manufacturer's site, checked September 30, 2026. Confirm your exact year, cab and seat type with the maker before ordering.

Notice where the cheap options stop. NVX's Ram and Silverado fitments end at 2018 builds, so owners of current trucks are choosing between premium loaded boxes and universal ones. We think that gap makes measuring more important every year. For Tundra and Titan, we don't have verified direct-fit options to point you to, so the universal route below is the place to start.

Here's what we'd do with a Ram or Silverado. Take the five measurements above, then look at a Proline X Micro Series sealed box under or behind the seat. The 10TW3 version is 21.5" x 14.5" x 5.25" with 0.5 ft³, and the Wavtech thinPRO12 version is 26.5" x 17" x 4.5" with 0.6 ft³. In a crew cab, a P10-S DF or P12-S DF on the rear floor is the other option.

To be clear, we haven't test-fit these universal boxes in Ram or GM trucks, so your measurements are what confirm the fit. Browse our shallow-mount subwoofer boxes, and if you'd like a second opinion, call 931-563-5151 with your five numbers.

Direct-fit sub boxes for current Ram and Silverado trucks come mainly from JL Audio, AudioControl, Memphis and Skar. JL's sealed Stealthbox for the 2019-up Ram 1500 Crew Cab lists at $2,099.99 (Garmin/JL), while Skar's ported dual 12 for 2019-2026 Silverado/Sierra Crew Cab is $178.49 empty and excludes Double Cab (Skar Audio).

Sealed or ported, 10 or 12: what size box works in a truck?

In most cabs, a sealed box with a shallow 10 or 12 is the right call. Of the direct-fit boxes above, JL's, AudioControl's and our Proline X truck boxes are sealed (the PR Edition adds a passive radiator), while Skar's Silverado dual 12 is ported (manufacturer pages). Ported boxes need port area and volume that truck cabs rarely have, and a small sealed box gets low-end help from the small cabin.

Do subs hit harder in a bigger box? Up to a point, yes. More air usually means deeper extension and more output for a given driver. But look at the ladder: the only box past 1.0 ft³ needs the seat raised 2.5 inches. In a truck cab, fit wins. A correct 0.5 ft³ sealed box beats a bigger box that keeps the seat from latching.

Do 10 inch subs hit harder than 12s? A 12 has more cone area, so it can move more air when it has the box it wants. In a truck, it often doesn't. A shallow 10 in its proper volume usually outplays a 12 squeezed into a box half its size. That's why our 10 inch subwoofer boxes for trucks are the common starting point.

From an SQ point of view, a sealed 0.5 to 0.6 ft³ box with a shallow 10 behind the seat isn't just a compromise. Sealed boxes roll off gently, and a small cab adds its own low-frequency gain, so the two work together. The result is tight, well-damped bass that blends with the front stage. For driver picks that suit these boxes, see our best subwoofers for trucks.

Most truck subwoofer boxes are small and sealed because cab space runs out before airspace does. Proline X truck-friendly boxes range from 0.5 ft³ behind the seat to 1.00 ft³ in a 6.75"-tall down-fire box, and the only 1.6 ft³ under-seat option needs a 2.5" seat lift (Audio Intensity product specs).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best subwoofer box for a truck?

The one that fits your cab with the seat in use. For Ford trucks, a direct-fit behind-seat box with 0.5 to 0.6 ft³ per 10" sub. For a 2019-up Ram 1500 Crew Cab, JL Audio's Stealthbox ($2,099.99, Garmin/JL). For anything else, a measured shallow sealed or down-fire box.

Can you put subs in a single cab truck?

Yes, with a shallow 8 or 10 behind the seat. Single cabs have no rear seat, so the box must be thin. A wedge that tapers to about 4.5" at the top suits the space; our Performance Optimized wedge for the JL 10TW3 holds 0.50 ft³ net. Measure with the seat all the way back.

Where is the best place to put a subwoofer in a truck?

Under the rear seat of a crew cab gives the most air, but it often costs storage; AudioControl says its TXRM02D10 for Ram requires removing the under-seat storage. Behind the seat keeps storage, and a down-fire box on the rear floor leaves the seats alone. Avoid the bed.

What size subwoofer is best for a truck?

Usually a 10" for single and extended cabs, and a 10" or 12" for crew cabs. Mounting depth decides it more than cab size does: our dual-10 F-150 behind-seat box takes drivers up to 3.7" deep. A shallow 10 in the right box often beats a cramped 12.

Do I need to remove my seat or storage to add a sub box?

Often you lose under-seat storage. AudioControl's Ram box requires removing it, and JL's Ram Stealthbox has a separate version for trucks with storage trays. Our 2015-2023 F-150 behind-seat box keeps storage usable. A 15" under-seat box, like our 1.6 ft³ Encore 15 box, needs a 2.5" seat lift.

Which truck subwoofer box should you buy?

  • Start with cab type: single cabs get a wedge or slim box, extended cabs a shallow box, crew cabs a real choice.
  • Measure with the seat where you drive it, and write down all five numbers.
  • Sealed and shallow wins in most cabs. Bigger only helps if it still fits.
  • Ford owners can buy direct-fit, with separate boxes for 2015-2023 and 2024-2026.
  • Ram and Silverado owners should compare the brands above, or measure for a universal shallow or down-fire box.

Driving a Ford? Start with our Ford truck subwoofer enclosures. Anything else? Measure first, then browse shallow-mount subwoofer boxes and down-fire boxes. When the box arrives, our guide to installing a subwoofer in a truck covers wiring and mounting.
