What is a loaded subwoofer enclosure?
A loaded subwoofer enclosure is a box with the driver already installed and wired to a terminal cup on the outside. You connect an amplifier. That's it. Crutchfield puts it the same way in its car subwoofer buying guide: a loaded box "has the sub(s) preinstalled by the manufacturer" and "all you need to add is an appropriate amplifier and wiring" (Crutchfield).
The confusion is understandable, because three different products get sold under overlapping language. An empty enclosure is the box alone. A loaded enclosure is box plus driver. A powered enclosure is box plus driver plus a built-in amplifier. We get calls every month from someone who bought a loaded box, hooked it straight to a head unit's speaker output, and heard almost nothing. Nothing was broken. There was just no amp in the signal path.
Loaded, powered, or empty: which one should you actually buy?
Buy loaded if you already own an amplifier or you want to pick your own. Buy powered if you want one box, one power feed, and you accept whatever amp the manufacturer bolted on. Buy empty only if you're pairing a driver you already own and you know its target volume. Here's the comparison in one place.

The upgrade path row is the one people underrate. A powered box locks you to that amplifier for the life of the box. With a loaded box, when you decide the 300 watts you started with isn't enough, you change one component and keep the enclosure. That flexibility is why most of what we build is loaded rather than powered.

Why does net internal volume matter more than the driver size?
Because the box is half the system. A subwoofer's compliance, resonant frequency, and mechanical Q all interact with the air trapped behind it, so the same 10-inch driver in two different volumes produces two different frequency responses. Cone diameter tells you almost nothing on its own.
Look at two of our own 10-inch loaded systems. The Micro Series sealed 10 with the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 runs 0.50 ft³ net. The ported 10 with the Prodigy NB2-10D4 runs 1.20 ft³ net, tuned to 33 Hz through a slot port with 11 square inches of port area. Both are 10s. One needs almost two and a half times the airspace of the other. Anyone who tells you a "10-inch box" is a single thing is selling you a shape, not a system.
If you want to sanity-check a driver against a loading type before you buy, run its efficiency bandwidth product. EBP is Fs divided by Qes. Under 50 points toward sealed, 50 to 100 is a transition zone where either works, and over 100 points toward ported. Should you buy a sealed or a ported loaded enclosure?
Ported gives you more output for the same power; sealed gives you more control in less space. BestCarAudio.com measured the tradeoff directly: a vented cabinet produced 6.5 dB more output at 40 Hz than a sealed one on identical input power, but it took 1.0 ft³ against the sealed box's 0.6 ft³, which worked out to more than 50% additional cabinet length (BestCarAudio.com).
6.5 dB is a lot. Getting the same gain out of a sealed box means roughly quadrupling amplifier power, which usually costs more than the extra cubic foot would have. So why does anyone buy sealed? Because in a vehicle you rarely have the extra cubic foot. Cargo floors, seat backs, and spare tire wells set a hard ceiling, and a ported box that got squeezed into a volume it wasn't designed for performs worse than a sealed box that fit correctly.
Our rule after enough builds: if the space is fixed and tight, go sealed and put the money into power. If you genuinely have the room and you listen to material with content below 35 Hz, ported earns its footprint. We've found the honest answer usually comes from a tape measure, not a preference.
How do you know a loaded enclosure will fit your vehicle?
Measure total enclosure depth, not the driver's mounting depth. Those two numbers get mixed up constantly, and the gap between them can be several inches. Our Micro Series 12 with the Wavtech thinPRO 12 uses a driver with 3.0" of mounting depth, but the finished box is 4.5" deep and 26.5" wide. The box is the thing that has to fit.
Driver choice drives that number hard. The thinPRO 12 gets 20mm of one-way linear excursion and a 5" voice coil out of 3.0" of depth. The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 gets 15.2mm of one-way excursion out of 3.25", using a concentric tube architecture that puts the voice coil under the dust cap (JL Audio). Compare that to a conventional motor: the Image Dynamics IDMAX 10 needs 7.68" of mounting depth on a 9.65" cutout. It's an excellent driver. It is not going behind a seat.
One more thing worth knowing when you're reading any spec table: bolt circle diameter is always larger than cutout diameter. The cutout is the hole the cone drops through; the bolt circle is the ring of mounting holes outside it. If a listing shows those reversed, the spec sheet was typed by someone who has never mounted a driver, and I'd treat the rest of the numbers with the same suspicion.

What should a loaded enclosure be built out of?
"High-quality MDF" appears on nearly every loaded box listing on the internet and means nothing without a grade. We cut every Proline X enclosure from 3/4" Langboard Elite, a mill-certified panel made in Willacoochee, Georgia from 100% Southern Yellow Pine, meeting ANSI A208.2. The published numbers are 48.5 lbs/ft³ density, 200 psi internal bond, 410,000 psi modulus of elasticity, and 325 lb face screw holding (Langboard MDF Grade Sheet, December 2022).
The number that actually matters there is internal bond, not stiffness. Elite isn't the stiffest grade Langboard makes; the industrial grade edges it slightly on MOE. What Elite has is roughly 200 psi of internal bond against about 120 psi for the industrial and moulding grades, and internal bond is what determines whether a threaded insert stays put in a baffle that's being loaded and unloaded thousands of times a minute. A baffle that lets go at the insert is a baffle that leaks, and a sealed box that leaks isn't sealed.
Panels come off ShopSabre CNC routers holding 0.005" tolerance. That precision is what lets us use V-groove combined with dado joinery on the Performance and Loaded Series: each mating panel gets channeled into a mechanical lock before adhesive, which increases glue surface area and removes the micro-gaps that open up in butt-joint boxes after a couple of seasons of heat cycling. How does a loaded enclosure arrive wired?
It arrives at a stated impedance, set at the terminal cup, and you need to know that number before you buy the amplifier. A dual voice coil driver can be wired several ways and each one presents a different load. Two 2-ohm coils in parallel come out at 1 ohm. Two 4-ohm coils in parallel come out at 2 ohms. Two 2-ohm coils in series come out at 4 ohms.
Our ported 10 uses a dual 4-ohm Prodigy NB2-10D4 wired to 2 ohms at the cup, so it's a straightforward match for most mono amps. The Micro Series 12 with the Wavtech thinPRO 12 is a single voice coil driver offered in 4-ohm or 2-ohm versions, which you select at checkout instead of rewiring later. Either way, one pair of leads leaves the box.
Inside the cup: ABS and carbon fiber composite body, recessed mount, stainless steel hardware, aluminum landing plates, copper ring terminals, and 12-gauge OFC pre-installed to the driver. Sealed variants ship with polyfill already installed and tuned to that specific volume, so there's nothing to stuff and nothing to guess at. Micro Series baffles use 8/32 threaded inserts on the back side so the driver mounts on machine screws rather than wood screws, which matters when a driver comes out for service.
