INSTALLER'S TAKE

This box exists for one reason: the space under a rear bench is 12 inches deep and a 15 inch cabinet does not go in it. The thinPRO10 already mounts in 2.875 inches, so height was never its problem. Depth was.

Height here is set by the driver, not by a volume target. Wāvtech specifies no rear clearance behind this motor, but we still hold 0.75 inch above it, and that puts the cabinet at 4.375 inches. On a 41 by 12 footprint that height holds 0.464 net, more than the 0.40 the standard 30 by 15 cabinet was built to. More air lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction.

Qtc 0.833, Fc 47.0 Hz, F3 40.9 Hz on the -2 and Qtc 0.788, Fc 48.5 Hz, F3 44.0 Hz on the -4. That is a touch more damped than Wāvtech's own 0.35 target alignment, and on a sealed shallow that is the right side to miss on.

Coil choice is simple since both are single voice coil. The -2 is 2 ohms, the -4 is 4 ohms, set by which model you buy rather than by wiring. The -2 has slightly lower Fs at 31 Hz and reaches about 3 Hz deeper; the -4 is marginally better damped.

Sensitivity is 81 to 82 dB, which is low. That is the cost of the excursion and the depth. Wāvtech recommends 250 to 750 watts and I would run the top half of that. The standoffs add 1.75, so plan around 6.125 inches of stack.

The Down Fire Wide Format

Down Fire Wide is the Performance Optimized answer to a specific problem: the space under the rear seat of a truck or SUV, or a narrow cargo floor, is long and shallow, and a 30 by 15 inch Down Fire cabinet will not go in it.

So the cabinet is turned sideways. This one runs 41 inches wide by 12 inches deep by 4.375 inches tall. It is the same thinPRO10, in a cabinet 3 inches shallower front to back than our standard 30 by 15 inch thinPRO10 cabinet and 11 inches longer. The airspace given up in depth is recovered along the length, so the driver still gets a properly sized chamber rather than a compromised one.

Which one to choose. If you have 15 inches of depth, the standard 30 by 15 inch cabinet is the pick: it is shorter end to end and stands 4.25 inches tall. If depth stops at 12 inches and you have 41 inches of run, this is the cabinet that fits. Measure the depth first. Under seat spaces vary widely between cab configurations, and depth is almost always the limiting dimension.

Performance, Performance Optimized, and Micro

Proline X builds three tiers of Down Fire enclosure. The difference is not finish or materials, it is whether the cabinet was designed for a category or for a driver, and how much of the fitting work is already done for you.

This page is a Performance Optimized enclosure. The cutouts, the cabinet height and the chamber volumes all come from the Wāvtech thinPRO10's own published numbers. A Performance box fits your subwoofer. A Performance Optimized box was built for it.

Built Around the thinPRO10

Nothing about this cabinet is generic. The baffle is bored to the thinPRO10's 9.0625 inch, 230mm cutout, and the cabinet height is set by its 2.875 inch mounting depth. Wāvtech publishes no rear clearance requirement behind the motor, because the magnet structure sits essentially flush with the frame rather than protruding into the airspace like a conventional vented pole motor. We still hold our standard 0.75 inch above the motor on this cabinet, and it finishes at 4.375 inches tall.

The driver is offered as the thinPRO10-2 (2 ohm SVC) or the thinPRO10-4 (4 ohm SVC). Both are rated 750 watts RMS and 2250 watts peak, with 20mm of one way linear excursion and 54mm of peak to peak mechanical travel. Cone area is 341.76 cm² and published displacement is 0.028 cubic feet, which is what the net volume figure below is calculated against.

The engineering is unusual for a shallow driver. A 4.5 inch four layer high temp voice coil rides on a vented polyimide composite former. The cone is honeycomb Nomex and glass fiber composite, the suspension pairs a high excursion double roll NBR surround with dual internal mirrored NBR spiders, and the motor is an FEA optimized dual gap structure with double stacked strontium magnets in a vented cast aluminum frame.

Net Volume, Not Gross

We build this cabinet at 0.464 cubic feet net, from a 0.497 cubic foot gross cavity, after the brace and the driver's published 0.028 cubic feet of displacement. Wāvtech's preferred sealed volume is a 0.35 cubic foot box, so this cabinet sits slightly on the larger, better damped side of their target.

True net, not marketing net. Internal volume is calculated from the machined cavity dimensions and the driver's published displacement, not estimated from external dimensions minus wall thickness.

Both coil options suit this volume, and the alignment is stated per driver. With the thinPRO10-2, Fs 31 Hz and Qts 0.55, the cabinet lands at Qtc 0.833, Fc 47.0 Hz, F3 40.9 Hz. With the thinPRO10-4, Fs 32 Hz and Qts 0.52, it lands at Qtc 0.788, Fc 48.5 Hz, F3 44.0 Hz, a more damped alignment that trades about three hertz of extension for tighter transient control. Both are single voice coil, so your final impedance is set by which model you buy, not by wiring.

Height on this cabinet is set by the driver's mounting depth, not by a volume target. The 2.875 inch driver reaches 1.375 inches past the inner baffle into the cabinet, and we hold 0.75 inch of clearance above the motor. That fixes the cabinet at 4.375 inches tall, and on a 41 by 12 footprint that height holds 0.464 cubic feet net, more than the 0.40 cubic feet the standard cabinet was built to. More air in a sealed box lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction: slightly more damping and a gentler approach to the rolloff.

Down Fire Wide Construction

Cut with V-groove and dado joinery on our ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF, a dense 48.5 lb/ft³ board with a 200 psi internal bond and 410,000 psi MOE. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square on Down Fire cabinets.

The cabinet measures 41 inches wide by 12 inches deep by 4.375 inches tall, measured in the down fire position and excluding standoffs. The 1.75 inch standoffs ship uninstalled so you can place them to suit your floor; installed, the finished stack is 6.125 inches. Plan the space around that figure, not the cabinet height.

1.5 Inch Double Baffle

Two 3/4 inch layers laminated to 1.5 inches, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. The driver lands on 8/32 threaded inserts, with stainless machine screws included. The thinPRO10's 10.8125 inch frame sits on the 12 inch deep baffle.

Windowed U-Brace

A windowed U-brace dadoed to the shell ties the front and rear walls together across the 41 inch span, and polyfill is installed as a light wall lining.

Side-Mounted Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite cup with stainless hardware and copper ring terminals, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Side mounted so it stays accessible with the baffle facing the floor.

Standoffs Included

1.75 inch standoffs ship with the enclosure, uninstalled. Mount them for a down fire install, or leave them off and run the cabinet front firing or up firing.

Power and Wiring

The thinPRO10 is rated 750 watts RMS and 2250 watts peak, and Wāvtech's own recommended power range is 250 to 750 watts RMS. Sensitivity is 81 dB on the thinPRO10-2 and 82 dB on the thinPRO10-4, so plan amplifier gain around the model you choose. Re measures 1.95 ohms on the -2 and 3.35 ohms on the -4.

Single voice coil means the load is set by the model: the -2 presents 2 ohms and the -4 presents 4 ohms through the side mounted cup. Bring your own thinPRO10-2 or thinPRO10-4; the driver is purchased separately. The enclosure carries a 1 year limited warranty.

This enclosure holds 0.464 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Wavtech thinPRO10 runs a system Qtc of 0.79–0.83 with half power at 40.9–44.0 Hz, and the cone reaches its 20.0 mm travel limit at 1150 W, above the driver’s 750 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1329 W — +179 W, or 16 percent more power for the same 20.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 50.0–54.2
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 4 54.2 2 50.0
4 · EBP 54.22 · EBP 50.0
At 50.0–54.2 the thinPRO10 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

0.464 cu ft against a 17.0 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.29  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 47–48 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.79–0.83

4 · Qtc 0.79, Fc 48 Hz, F3 44.0 Hz2 · Qtc 0.83, Fc 47 Hz, F3 40.9 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 31.0–32.0 Hz free-air to 47–48 Hz and half power lands at 40.9–44.0 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 20.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 1150–1180 W unfiltered  →  1329–1399 W with a 25 Hz subsonic

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 20.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 1150 W, reached first at 25 Hz. It sits above the 750 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1329 W before hitting the same 20.0 mm. That is 16 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements, and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
