Same VD-12 as the standard 30 by 15 box, laid out 41 by 14. One inch shallower, 11 inches longer, and 6.5 inches tall against 7.34. Measure all three dimensions before choosing between them.

Height here is set by the 4.95 inch motor, not the airspace: 0.75 inch above the motor is the floor, and at 41 by 14 that already buys 1.090 cubic feet net against the 1.00 the standard box was built to. That is a clearance fact, not a tuning target. More air lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction.

Alignment is Qtc 0.854 with F3 at 46.9 Hz on the D2, Qtc 0.936 with F3 at 46.4 Hz on the D4.

Cut is 11.28, Skar's own figure. Inserts ship in the kit, not pressed: Skar prints no bolt circle. Mark from the driver, drill, press. D2 or D4; Skar publishes both sets. Displacement is our estimate.

The Down Fire Wide Format

Down Fire Wide takes the same Skar Audio VD-12 our standard 30 by 15 inch Down Fire enclosure is built for and lays the cabinet out along a different axis. It is 1 inch shallower front to back, 14 inches instead of 15, and 11 inches longer, 41 instead of 30.

Fourteen inches is the practical minimum depth for a 12. The frame needs about 13 inches of baffle, and the cabinet walls need land around it, so the depth cannot come down further. The VD-12's 12.6 inch frame sits on the 14 inch deep baffle with about 0.70 inch of baffle fore and aft.

Spreading the airspace along 41 inches means the wide box stands lower. This cabinet is 41 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 6.5 inches tall, against 7.34 inches tall for the standard 30 by 15, both measured in the down fire position and excluding standoffs. With the 1.75 inch standoffs installed it stands 8.25 inches.

Which one to choose. The standard 30 by 15 is the pick when length is limited. This one is the pick when height or depth is the limit and you have 41 inches of run. Measure all three before ordering.

Performance, Performance Optimized, and Micro

Proline X builds three tiers of Down Fire enclosure. The difference is not finish or materials, it is whether the cabinet was designed for a category or for a driver, and how much of the fitting work is already done for you.

This page is a Performance Optimized enclosure. The cutout, the cabinet height and the airspace all come from the Skar Audio VD-12's own published numbers. A Performance box fits your subwoofer. A Performance Optimized box was built for it.

Built Around the Skar Audio VD-12

Nothing about this cabinet is generic. The baffle is cut to 11.28 in, Skar's published cutout, under the 12.60 in frame.

The VD-12 is Skar Audio's 12 inch, rated 500 watts RMS, with 11 mm of one-way excursion. It is 4.95 inches deep, which matters on a down fire, where the motor rises into the cabinet. The figures come from the Thiele-Small table Skar prints on its VD-12 product page: Fs 35.3 Hz, Qts 0.55, Vas 43.5 liters for the D2. Skar publishes no driver displacement, so the 0.085 cubic feet used here is our estimate from comparable 12 inch woofers. Skar also leaves cone area blank, so the 505 cm² in the specs is derived from their Vas and compliance.

Skar also publishes a separate set for the VD-12 D4: Fs 36.6 Hz, Qts 0.60, Vas 44.3 liters. It shares the D2's cutout and mounting depth, so this cabinet is specified for the VD-12 D2 or D4.

Net Volume, Not Gross

The cabinet holds 1.090 cubic feet net from a 1.18 cubic foot gross cavity, after the windowed U-brace and the driver's estimated 0.085 cubic feet of displacement are subtracted.

That produces Qtc 0.854 with Fc at 54.8 Hz and a predicted F3 of 46.9 Hz on the VD-12 D2, and Qtc 0.936 with Fc at 57.1 Hz and F3 at 46.4 Hz on the D4. Both are above the 0.707 maximally flat reference, so there is real lift near the corner rather than a textbook flat curve.

Height is set by the motor, not the airspace. The 4.95 inch mounting depth needs the cabinet to leave 0.75 inch above the motor, and at 41 by 14 that minimum height already encloses 1.090 cubic feet net, more than the 1.00 cubic feet the standard 30 by 15 box was built to. More air for the same driver lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction: better damping, less peaking, a slightly earlier rolloff.

True net, not marketing net. Internal volume is calculated from the machined cavity dimensions and the driver's estimated displacement, not estimated from external dimensions minus wall thickness. All figures are anechoic; firing down into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain below 60 Hz, so in-car response extends below them.

Down Fire Wide Construction

Cut with V-groove and dado joinery on our ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF, a dense 48.5 lb/ft³ board with a 200 psi internal bond and 410,000 psi MOE. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square on Down Fire cabinets.

The cabinet measures 41 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 6.5 inches tall, measured in the down fire position and excluding standoffs. The 1.75 inch standoffs ship with the enclosure but are not installed, so plan the space around the installed height of 8.25 inches.

1.5 Inch Double Baffle

Two 3/4 inch layers laminated to 1.5 inches, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. Mounting is a threaded insert kit with stainless machine screws, not pre-installed, because Skar prints no bolt circle.

Frame on a 14 Inch Baffle

The 12.6 inch frame sits on the 14 inch deep baffle with about 0.70 inch of material fore and aft.

Windowed U-Brace

One chamber, braced with a windowed U-brace dadoed to the shell, which stiffens the long panels without walling off the airspace.

Side-Mounted Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite cup with stainless hardware and copper ring terminals, side mounted and pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC, so it stays accessible with the baffle facing the floor.

Standoffs and Polyfill

1.75 inch standoffs ship uninstalled, so you can place them to suit your floor or leave them off and run the cabinet front or up firing. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining and does not alter the acoustic volume.

Power and Wiring

Skar rates the VD-12 at 500 watts RMS. The VD-12 D2 wires to 4 ohms with its coils in series or 1 ohm in parallel. The VD-12 D4 wires to 8 ohms in series or 2 ohms in parallel. Anything under 1 ohm, and many amplifiers at 1 ohm, is outside what the amplifier is built for; series wiring is the safe default. Confirm the load against your amplifier's minimum stable impedance before powering the system.

Skar prints no bolt circle for the VD-12, so the baffle ships undrilled with a threaded insert kit and stainless machine screws: set the driver in the recess, mark its holes, drill, press the inserts and bolt it down. The enclosure carries a 1 year limited warranty. Bring your own VD-12 D2 or D4; the driver is purchased separately.

This enclosure holds 1.090 cu ft net . In it the Skar Audio VD-12 runs a system Qtc of 0.85–0.94 with half power at 46.4–46.9 Hz, and the cone reaches its 11.0 mm travel limit at 365 W, below the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 389 W — +24 W, or 7 percent more power for the same 11.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 52.3–56.9
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D2 56.9 D4 52.3
D2 · EBP 56.9D4 · EBP 52.3
At 52.3–56.9 the VD-12 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

1.090 cu ft against a 43.5 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.41  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 55–57 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.85–0.94

D2 · Qtc 0.85, Fc 55 Hz, F3 46.9 HzD4 · Qtc 0.94, Fc 57 Hz, F3 46.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 35.3–36.6 Hz free-air to 55–57 Hz and half power lands at 46.4–46.9 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. Figures are Skar Audio’s published VD-12 parameters from its product page. Worth knowing: Skar leaves cone area blank on the VD, so the 505 square centimetres here is derived from their Vas and compliance. This box is for the VD-12 D2.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 11.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 365–388 W unfiltered  →  389–399 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 11.0 mm 365 W reaches Xmax here

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 11.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 365 W, reached first at 31 Hz. It sits under the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 389 W before hitting the same 11.0 mm. That is 7 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements, and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
