Key Takeaways
- The Skar Audio EVL-15 D2 leads on raw value at 4.17 W/$: 1250W RMS for $299.99 at regular price.
- The Kicker CompVR 15 ($269.99) is the most sensitive sub here at 89.2 dB, so it gets loud on a smaller amp.
- The Sundown SA-15 v.2 pairs 1,250W RMS with a fully published box spec: 3.0 cu ft ported at 35 Hz.
- As of November 2026, no mainstream car-audio 15 has published Klippel data, so pick on box fit, sensitivity, and documentation.
- Budget box space first: the 15s in this guide want 1.25 to 5.2 cu ft sealed.
The best 15 inch subwoofer for most car audio builds is the Skar Audio EVL-15 D2 if you want the most power for the money, at 1250W RMS for $299.99, or the Sundown SA-15 v.2 if you want that power with a complete, published enclosure spec. If your amp is modest, the Kicker CompVR 15 is the efficient choice at 89.2 dB. This guide is for builders with the space for a big box, usually an SUV, a wagon, or a truck bed or cab, who want the deepest, most physical bass a single driver can deliver.
A 15 is a commitment. It has roughly 80% more cone area than a 12, so it moves serious air without long excursion, but it also wants a box two to three times the size of a 10's. That is the real decision, more than brand. It is also the size with the least independent test data: of the 27 drivers on ResoNix Sound Solutions' Klippel leaderboard, only two are 15s, and neither is a mainstream car-audio sub.
We compared three widely sold 15-inch subwoofers from $270 to $440 on power-to-price, sensitivity, and the box each manufacturer actually recommends, then the five 15s we carry and install. For the enclosure side, keep our sealed vs ported guide and box calculator handy.
What actually matters in a 15-inch car audio subwoofer?
It takes about ten times the amplifier power for bass to sound twice as loud (HyperPhysics, Georgia State University), which is why cone area and sensitivity matter so much at this size. A 15 makes its output by moving a big cone a modest distance, not a small cone a long way.
Three numbers decide whether a 15 works in your vehicle. First, the box volume the manufacturer recommends, because a 15 in the wrong box loses everything that makes it worth the space. Second, sensitivity: doubling power adds only 3 dB (TV Technology), so a 3 dB more sensitive sub gets the same output on half the amplifier. Third, mounting depth, which runs 7 to 10 inches on most conventional 15s.
Xmax still matters, but less than on a 10. For this roundup we prioritized RMS power relative to street price, published box specs, and sensitivity. Peak wattage is ignored, because it is a marketing number.
Most Efficient: Kicker CompVR 15 (52CVR154)
The Kicker CompVR 15 lists 89.2 dB sensitivity, the highest in this roundup, with a recommended power range up to 700W RMS for a street price of $269.99, or 2.59 W/$ (Kicker, 2026). That sensitivity is the story: it will match subs rated for far more power on a mid-size amp.
The 52CVR154 replaced the 43CVR154 and runs dual 4-ohm coils. Kicker's box window is the most forgiving we have seen on any 15: 1.8 to 5.2 cu ft sealed, or 3 to 5 cu ft vented. Kicker does not publish an Xmax figure for it, and there is no independent test data, so you are buying on Kicker's sensitivity spec and box flexibility.
Who is this for? Someone with a 500 to 700W monoblock who wants a big, easy 15 that drops into an existing prefab box and gets loud without a bigger electrical system.
Kicker CompVR 15 (52CVR154) quick specs
RMS power: up to 700W (350-700W recommended) / Peak: 1400W · Voice coil: Dual 4-ohm · Xmax: not published by Kicker · Sensitivity: 89.2dB · Street price: ~$269.99 · Power-to-price: 2.59 W/$ · Best enclosure: Sealed 1.8-5.2 ft³ or vented 3-5 ft³Most Power per Dollar: Skar Audio EVL-15 D2
The Skar EVL-15 D2 is rated 1250W RMS on a 3-inch voice coil at a regular price of $299.99, or 4.17 W/$, the best ratio here and better than any 15 we carry (Skar Audio, 2026). It is often on sale for less.
The same caveat as the 10-inch EVL applies. Skar's own page does not publish Xmax, sensitivity, or recommended box volume for the EVL-15. Retailer listings carry those numbers, but we could not trace them to a Skar source, so we are not repeating them. You are buying the RMS rating and Skar's long track record in loud ported SPL builds.
A 1250W sub only delivers 1250W with an amp and electrical system that can supply it. Price the alternator, battery, and wiring with the sub, not after. The dual 2-ohm coils wire to 1 ohm or 4 ohms; check what 1 ohm stable means first.
Skar Audio EVL-15 D2 quick specs
RMS power: 1250W / Peak: 2500W · Voice coil: Dual 2-ohm, 3-inch · Xmax: not published by Skar · Sensitivity: not published by Skar · Street price: ~$299.99 regular · Power-to-price: 4.17 W/$ · Best enclosure: Ported, ask the manufacturer for volume and tuningBest for Output with Published Specs: Sundown SA-15 v.2
Sundown's SA-15 v.2 lists 1,250W RMS, 19mm of one-way Xmax, and 88.22 dB sensitivity on the D2 at $439.99, for 2.84 W/$ (Sundown Audio, 2026). That combination of power and sensitivity is the strongest spec sheet in this group.
It also comes with a complete box recommendation: 2.0 cu ft sealed, or 3.0 cu ft ported at 35 Hz with 44 square inches of port. Sundown quotes Xmax as one-way, with a 37mm mechanical limit, and offers both D2 and D4 (87.08 dB) versions. One note: Sundown's page shows a dealer-only purchase button, so check availability before you plan around it.
Is it worth $140 more than the Skar? If you want to design the box from the manufacturer's numbers rather than guess, yes. This is the 15 for a loud, daily ported build in an SUV or a truck with room for 3 cu ft.
Sundown SA-15 v.2 quick specs
RMS power: 1250W / Peak: 2500W · Voice coil: Dual 2 or dual 4-ohm · Xmax (claimed): 19mm one-way, 37mm Xmech · Sensitivity: 88.22dB (D2) / 87.08dB (D4) · Street price: ~$439.99 · Power-to-price: 2.84 W/$ · Best enclosure: Ported 3.0 ft³ @ 35 Hz, or sealed 2.0 ft³What does Klippel testing say about 15-inch subs?
Very little yet. The only two 15s on ResoNix's leaderboard as of November 2026 are the ResoNix GUS-15 prototype, which measured 25.89mm against a 25mm claim, and the Acoustic Elegance SBP15 with Apollo motor, which measured 16.49mm against 14mm and scored 983 of 1,250 (ResoNix Sound Solutions, 2026).
Both reached their BL motor limit first, with no early inductance limit, which is the opposite of what testing found on most 10s. That is encouraging, but two drivers is not a trend, and neither one is a mainstream car-audio sub. The GUS-15 is ResoNix's own prototype, and the SBP15 is a home and infinite-baffle driver.
The closest data point to a 15 we carry is its smaller sibling. The Image Dynamics IDMAX v4 12" measured 21.56mm at the BL 70% limit against a 19mm claim, scored 863, and did not hit its inductance or suspension limits first. The IDMAX15 V4 shares that platform with a larger 575 oz motor, but it has not been tested, so we will not claim the same result for it.

How do you choose the right 15-inch subwoofer for your build?
Start with the box, because that is where most 15 builds go wrong. The 15s in this guide want anywhere from 1.25 cu ft sealed (the shallow Audiomobile Encore 4415) to 5.2 cu ft at the top of Kicker's range, and 3 cu ft or more ported. Measure what your vehicle can actually give up, then shortlist the drivers whose recommended box fits. A 15 squeezed into a 12's box will not outplay a good 12. Our 15 inch subwoofer boxes are cut per driver if you would rather not guess.
Then budget the amplifier. The amp's clean RMS output at your sub's wiring impedance should land between 75% and 150% of the sub's RMS rating. Sensitivity changes that math: the Kicker at 89.2 dB needs roughly half the power of a sub at 86 dB to reach the same level. See our car amplifiers and how to set amplifier gain. For coil wiring, see our subwoofer impedance guide.
Finally, sealed or ported? Ported 15s are the classic choice for deep, loud bass in an SUV, and a 15 tuned in the low 30s is hard to beat for output per watt. Sealed 15s give up some output for tighter, flatter response in a smaller box. Is a 15 even the right size? Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best 15-inch subwoofer for the money?
The Skar Audio EVL-15 D2 leads at 4.17 watts per dollar, 1250W RMS for $299.99 at regular price. The Kicker CompVR 15 is cheaper at $269.99 and more sensitive at 89.2 dB. Among the 15s we carry, the Prodigy NB5 15 leads at 2.76 W/$, 1200W RMS for $434.99.
How big should the box be for a 15-inch subwoofer?
Most 15s want 1.5 to 3 cu ft sealed and 3 to 5 cu ft ported, but build to the driver's own number. The Sundown SA-15 v.2 wants 2.0 cu ft sealed or 3.0 ported at 35 Hz, while the Audiomobile Encore 4415 needs only 1.25 to 1.8 cu ft sealed.
Is a 15-inch subwoofer better than a 12?
For deep, loud bass with room for the box, usually yes. A 15 has roughly 80% more cone area than a 12, so it moves more air with less excursion. A 12 needs about half the box, fits more vehicles, and is often the better choice for tight, punchy bass or limited space.
What amplifier do I need for a 15-inch subwoofer?
Target 75 to 150% of the sub's RMS rating at its wiring impedance. A 1250W RMS sub like the Sundown SA-15 v.2 wants roughly 940 to 1,875W RMS at its final impedance, and an electrical system to match. A sensitive sub like the 89.2 dB Kicker CompVR 15 gets loud on far less.
Can a 15-inch subwoofer fit in a truck?
Some can. Most 15s need 7 to 10 inches of mounting depth, which rules out behind-seat boxes in most cabs. The Audiomobile Encore 4415 mounts in 5.9 inches while handling 1000W RMS, which makes it the 15 we recommend for truck cabs and other shallow installs.
Which 15-inch subwoofer should you buy?
For the most power per dollar, the Skar EVL-15 D2 at 4.17 W/$. For a modest amp, the 89.2 dB Kicker CompVR 15. For a loud ported build designed from real numbers, the Sundown SA-15 v.2. For a shallow install, the Audiomobile Encore 4415 is the 15 that fits where others will not. Whatever you pick, the box decides how it sounds, so size it to the driver. The 15s we carry and install
The list above is the wider market. Here is what we carry in Tullahoma and put in our own builds. Fifteens move slower than tens and twelves, so check each product page for current availability. They are in price order, but price is not how you should pick: run the EBP number in the table below and let the driver tell you what box it wants. The IDMAX15 V4 at EBP 24.9 is a sealed driver with a deliberately high Qts, built for impact, not flatness. The Prodigy NB5 15 at 66.7 is happy ported. Not sure which fits your box and power, contact us and we will match the driver to your enclosure and amp.
Prodigy NB5 15 ($434.99)
The output-per-dollar build
1200W RMS for $434.99 is 2.76 watts per dollar, the best ratio of any 15 we carry. The 2.75 inch flat aluminum voice coil sheds heat better than round wire, and a radial-vented gap pushes air across the windings, so it holds output through a long session instead of compressing. 27mm of one-way Xmax. This is the pick for a ported SQL or loud daily build.
1200W RMS, 27mm one-way Xmax, 35.6 Hz Fs, 2.75 inch flat-wire coil, dual 2 or dual 4 ohm
Stereo Integrity SQL 15 Series 2 ($475.99)
The sound-quality-loud 15
Stereo Integrity built the SQL to sit between pure SQ and pure SPL, and the box options show it: 2 cu ft sealed for control, or 4.25 cu ft ported down at 22 Hz for the kind of extension only a 15 in a big box delivers. 1000W RMS and 26mm of one-way Xmax back it up.
1000W RMS, 26mm one-way Xmax, 33 Hz Fs, 7.4 inch depth, dual 2 or dual 4 ohm
Image Dynamics IDMAX15 V4 ($679.99)
The flagship
A 575 oz motor, a 2.5 inch coil, 22mm of Xmax and a field-replaceable cone. With a Qts near 0.95 it will not give you a textbook flat sealed alignment, and it is not trying to. It gives you a strong midbass lift and physical low end that fills a full-size truck or SUV. Budget for the size: 10.43 inches deep and 43 lbs, so plan a two-person install.
600W RMS / 1200W peak, 22mm Xmax, 30 Hz Fs, 575 oz motor, 10.43 inch depth
Audiomobile Encore 4415 ($899.95)
The shallow 15
A normal 15 needs 7 to 10 inches of mounting depth. The 4415 needs 5.9. That opens up truck cabs, spare-tire wells and custom builds that have the footprint for a 15 but not the depth. It still handles 1000W RMS with 19mm of one-way Xmax, cooled by an intercooler-style aluminum heat sink on the motor. Sealed at 1.25 to 1.8 cu ft, 1.5 optimal.
1000W RMS / 4000W peak, 19mm one-way Xmax, 31 Hz Fs, 5.9 inch depth, dual 4 ohm
Stereo Integrity HST-15 ($1,199.99)
The excursion monster
40mm of one-way linear excursion and 102mm of total peak travel, driven by a 250mm triple-stacked motor with three shorting rings to hold distortion down at that stroke. Stereo Integrity does not publish a full T/S set for it, and the Klippel report on our product page covers force factor and suspension rather than box parameters, so this is a driver we model with you before we build the box. Plan 0.45 cu ft of displacement into any enclosure.
40mm one-way linear Xmax, 102mm total peak, 250mm triple-stacked motor, dual 1 or dual 2 ohm
Every driver above needs an enclosure sized to its own parameters, not to a chart. Our 15 inch subwoofer boxes are cut to net volume per driver, sealed and ported, if you want the box handled at the same time.
How the 15s we carry compare
Same five drivers as above, side by side. EBP is Fs divided by Qes, and it is the fastest way to read what box a driver wants: under 50 says sealed, 50 to 100 says either, over 100 says ported. Every figure below comes from the manufacturer spec sheet on that driver's product page.
| Driver | Price | RMS | Xmax (1-way) | Fs | EBP | Depth | Box it wants |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prodigy NB5 15 | $434.99 | 1200W | 27mm | 35.6 Hz | 66.7 | not published | Ported; ask us for the alignment |
| Stereo Integrity SQL 15 S2 | $475.99 | 1000W | 26mm | 33 Hz | 54.1 | 7.4 in | 2 cu ft sealed, or 4.25 ported @ 22 Hz |
| Image Dynamics IDMAX15 V4 | $679.99 | 600W | 22mm | 30 Hz | 24.9 | 10.43 in | 1.5 to 3.0 cu ft sealed |
| Audiomobile Encore 4415 | $899.95 | 1000W | 19mm | 31 Hz | 47.0 | 5.9 in | 1.25 to 1.8 cu ft sealed (1.5 optimal) |
| Stereo Integrity HST-15 | $1,199.99 | not published | 40mm | not published | n/a | not published | Modeled per build (0.45 cu ft displacement) |
Reading the table: every Xmax figure here is one-way linear excursion, not peak-to-peak. "Not published" means the manufacturer does not list that figure, and we would rather leave the cell blank than guess. Sealed volumes are the manufacturer's own recommended range, before driver displacement.
