Single 13.5" Premium Shallow-Mount Sealed Wedge | Rear-Firing Trunk-Load for JL's Flagship Thin-Line
The JL Audio 13TW5v2 in JL's Spec-Perfect Sealed Volume
The JL Audio 13TW5v2 is JL's flagship thin-line subwoofer — a 13.5-inch cone driven by a massive 7-inch voice coil, packaged in a 2.625" mounting depth footprint. Built around JL's patented concentric tube suspension with a Santoprene surround (a step up from the TW3's rubber surround), a mica-injected polypropylene cone, and JL's Dynamic Motor Analysis-optimized motor structure, this driver represents the current state of the art in shallow-mount subwoofer engineering. 600 watts RMS continuous, 11mm one-way Xmax, and enclosure requirements that fit where conventional 12s and 13s cannot.
The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 for JL Audio TW5 is engineered to hit JL's exact published sealed specification. 0.852 cubic feet gross internal volume minus the 13TW5v2's 0.052 cubic foot driver displacement equals 0.800 cubic feet net — exact match to JL's 0.80 cubic foot published sealed spec, delivering the alignment JL's engineers targeted for this flagship driver.
0.852 cubic feet gross = 0.800 cubic feet net after the 13TW5v2's 0.052 cubic foot driver displacement. Exact match to JL Audio's published optimum sealed volume for the 13TW5v2. The ultra-shallow wedge geometry — 4.12" deep at the top rising to 9.89" at the bottom — is engineered around the TW5's 2.625" mounting depth, mounting the driver on the vertical trunk-lid-side face and firing rearward into the trunk cavity.
Why the TW5v2 Exists (Full-Size 13.5" Bass in a 2.625" Footprint)
The 13TW5v2 was engineered around a single premise: what if you could get flagship 13.5" subwoofer performance in a mounting depth that fits under a truck seat, behind a sports car parcel shelf, or in the tight cargo bay of a compact SUV? JL's answer is the concentric tube suspension system — a patented architecture that supports a 7-inch voice coil and delivers 11mm of one-way Xmax while collapsing the entire driver profile to just 2.625" of mounting depth.
The result is a driver that sits in JL's lineup between the standard W3v3 and W6v3 in market position, but occupies its own unique category in cabinet requirements. JL specifies exactly 0.80 cubic feet net internal for the sealed alignment — smaller than what a standard 12" W6v3 requires (1.0 cu ft), let alone what a standard 13" W3v3 wants (1.5-1.75 cu ft depending on impedance). And the mounting depth is less than half the 7.63" that the standard 13W3v3 requires. This is a driver that lets you install a real 13.5" cone in vehicles where a 13W3v3 or 13W6v3 simply cannot fit.
Seat-Side Face Matches Seat Lean
Most factory rear seat backs lean roughly 20 degrees back from vertical. The angled face of this wedge (4.12" at top, 9.89" at bottom) matches that lean, tucking against the seat back with no wasted gap. The ultra-shallow 4.12" top face slides under decklids and parcel shelves that block deeper cabinets.
Trunk-Lid-Side Face Fires the Woofer
The vertical face on the opposite side of the wedge (28.34" wide × 15.9" tall) is where the 13TW5v2 mounts. The driver fires rearward toward the trunk lid, using the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber — the classic SQ trunk-load install pattern, now in shallow-mount 13.5" format.
Trunk Cavity Loading
Firing the woofer into the trunk cavity rather than directly into the cabin uses the trunk itself as an extension of the acoustic system. Low frequencies transmit into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and cabin boundaries — smoother than direct-firing setups.
13.5" Cone, Slim Cabinet
28.34" wide by 15.9" tall by 4.12-9.89" deep. Substantially smaller in every dimension than a full-depth 13W3v3 enclosure. The 4.12" top depth is the standout number — this cabinet's top edge fits under obstructions that no full-depth 13" wedge could clear.
Engineered to JL Audio's Published Sealed Specification
JL Audio publishes exactly one recommended sealed enclosure volume for the 13TW5v2: 0.80 cubic feet net internal. This spec is JL's own engineered target for the driver — the volume where the TW5's concentric tube suspension, motor structure, and cone assembly deliver the balanced response their engineers designed the driver for. The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 delivers 0.852 cubic feet gross internal, which after subtracting the 13TW5v2's 0.052 cubic foot displacement lands exactly at the 0.80 cubic foot JL spec.
Sealed Only (Never Ported)
JL Audio specifically optimizes the 13TW5v2 for sealed enclosures only. Ported operation significantly increases the risk of cone unloading (over-excursion below the port tuning frequency), which can permanently damage the unique concentric tube suspension system. This cabinet is engineered for exactly that reason — a sealed alignment at JL's exact spec, with no venting, no port tuning to worry about, and no risk of suspension damage from unloading.
Mounting Geometry and Driver Fitment
The vertical trunk-lid-side baffle is cut to the 13TW5v2's exact 12.5" cutout specification. The 13TW5v2's 2.625" mounting depth fits inside the cabinet with clearance — internal depth from the vertical baffle to the interior of the angled seat-side face ranges from approximately 3.37" at the top edge to 9.14" at the bottom (after 3/4" MDF panel thickness), with the driver's mounting position at cabinet center providing over 5.6" of clearance behind the motor. The 14.2" overall driver diameter fits within the 15.9" tall baffle with room for the mounting flange, and the 13.5" bolt hole circle is pre-drilled with 8/32 threaded inserts.
Damping and Cabinet Considerations
The 13TW5v2 is highly air-displacement sensitive due to its concentric tube suspension. Over-damping with excessive polyfill can restrict cone motion and choke the low end. The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 uses a light polyfill layer on the interior side walls only — no packing around the driver, no over-stuffed cabinets. Just enough damping to control internal reflections without impeding the suspension's freedom to move.
Performance Series Construction, Premium Driver Tuning
Langboard Elite MDF
Premium 3/4" MDF panels milled to documented spec — denser and more dimensionally stable than commodity MDF. Critical in a shallow cabinet housing a 600W RMS driver: panel resonance would color the sound and MDF creep would allow air leaks over time. Langboard's density and stability address both.
V-Groove and Dado Joinery
CNC-cut V-grooves at every panel intersection let the wedge cabinet fold into its angled shape with maximum glue surface. Dado joints lock the vertical woofer baffle and the ultra-shallow angled seat-side panel into the side walls — no fasteners visible from outside, no exposed end grain at joints.
Standard Round Baffle Cutout
Unlike the TW3's tab-ear mounting, the TW5v2 uses a standard perimeter mounting flange with 13.5" bolt circle. The 12.5" cutout is CNC-machined with the bolt pattern pre-drilled and 8/32 threaded inserts pressed into the baffle backside. Stainless steel machine screws included — installer's choice of pan-head or button-head cosmetically, both mechanically identical.
Pre-Wired Terminal Cup
Proline X ABS/carbon fiber composite terminal cup, pre-wired with 12-gauge OFC inside the cabinet, with stainless steel hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations on the input side.
Every panel is cut on ShopSabre CNC routers in our Tullahoma, TN facility. The shallow wedge geometry requires precise CNC compound cuts — the 4.12" top-face-to-9.89" bottom-face depth transition over 15.9" of height must be dimensionally perfect to hit both the JL-spec 0.80 cu ft net target and the correct 20-degree seat-side mating angle. Internal volume is verified on every unit.
Customize Your Build
Carpet Finish
Dark Gray Trunkliner is the standard durable wrap, matched to most factory trunk and cargo-area carpet tones. Plush Black (+$10) is a deeper, more luxurious nap that pairs well with blacked-out interiors and show builds.
Acrylic Insert Color
Choose Black, Blue, Red, or White for the baffle insert to match your build. Or skip the insert entirely (-$40) for a clean, understated look. The insert is purely cosmetic — performance is identical across colors.
Box-Only or Loaded
Add a JL Audio 13TW5v2-2 (Single 2-ohm) or 13TW5v2-4 (Single 4-ohm) driver directly to your order and we'll ship the complete loaded system, ready to wire to your amplifier. Already own your 13TW5v2? Order the enclosure box-only and drop in the driver you have.
Wiring the JL Audio 13TW5v2 to Your Amplifier
The JL Audio 13TW5v2 is a single-voice-coil driver available in two impedance versions. The pre-wired terminal cup accepts the two-conductor connection via 12-gauge OFC, with stainless steel input hardware.
13TW5v2-2 (Single 2-ohm): Presents a 2-ohm load directly to your amplifier — the higher-output configuration, ideal for modern class D monoblocks stable at 2 ohms. Recommended for maximizing power transfer and SPL output. Most single-driver installs pair with a class D monoblock at 2 ohms delivering the TW5v2's rated 400-600 watts RMS.
13TW5v2-4 (Single 4-ohm): Presents a 4-ohm load — easier on both amp and driver, ideal for dual-driver installs (two 4-ohm drivers wired in parallel present a 2-ohm total load) or with amplifiers optimized for 4-ohm output.
The 13TW5v2 is rated for 600 watts RMS continuous with a 250-600 watt RMS recommended amplifier range. Aim for a well-regulated monoblock delivering 400-600 watts RMS at your chosen impedance. Important: this driver benefits from a subsonic filter set around 25-30 Hz to prevent over-excursion below its Fs (27.6 Hz). Set your amplifier's active low-pass filter between 80 and 100 Hz for musical accuracy.
Important: JL Audio explicitly recommends against using this subwoofer with a passive crossover (coil), as this type of device will adversely affect performance. Active crossovers only.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet
Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.
Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.
Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data
| Property | Value | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Panel Stock | Langboard Elite MDF | Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF" |
| Thickness | 3/4" (18mm) | Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure |
| Density | 48.5 lbs/ft³ | Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance |
| Internal Bond | 200 psi | Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet |
| Modulus of Rupture (MOR) | 4,200 psi | Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans |
| Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) | 410,000 psi | Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance |
| Face Screw Holding | 325 lbs | How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time |
| Edge Screw Holding | 250 lbs | Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face |
200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures
The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.
410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance
The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.
325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked
Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.
Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"
The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.
Why Proline X?
Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements — and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
CNC-Cut to Spec
Panels are machine-cut on ShopSabre CNC routers and joined with V-groove and dado joinery. Consistent geometry, no hand-cut variance, no gaps at the joints.
Handcrafted in USA
Hand-assembled at our facility in Tullahoma, TN. Every enclosure is inspected before it ships.
Tuned to the Build
Internal volume and port geometry are calculated to spec and CNC-cut to exact dimensions. The box performs the same way every time.
