INSTALLER'S TAKE

Same 3.00 inch mounting depth as the DMD 10, which is the useful part. Stepping up from the 10 to the 12 in this series costs you nothing in depth, only cutout diameter and about two inches of cabinet height. Aluminum heatsink dust cap, die-cast shallow frame, vented pole, Klippel optimized motor and suspension symmetry per Diamond.

Coil choice matters a lot on this one. The D2 runs Qts 0.77, the D4 runs 0.91. Since Qtc can never fall below Qts in any sealed enclosure, the D4 is underdamped in any box you build for it, full stop. In this cabinet the D2 lands at Qtc 1.246 and the D4 at 1.336. The D4 does have the stronger motor at 16.4 T against 13.7 and more excursion at 8.8mm against 7.9, so it is not a bad driver, but for sealed use the D2 is the better performer and it is not close.

We build at 1.25 net rather than Diamond's suggested 0.75, which would put the D2 near 1.20 and the D4 above 1.42. The extra volume buys better damping on both plus a couple of hertz. Diamond's manual calls their table a suggestion rather than a specification, and I agree with them on that point.

Compare our numbers to the manual and they will not match. Diamond lists the DMD122SH at Qtc 0.91 in 0.75 cubic feet. Their own published Qts of 0.77 and Vas of 30.7 liters run through standard sealed box math at that volume gives 1.20. Every variant is off in the same direction by 0.2 to 0.3. That is too large to be a gross versus net convention gap - their T/S table and enclosure table appear to have been produced independently. We publish what the driver data gives.

Fs is 46 Hz, so F3 sits in the low 50s regardless of volume. This is a punch and midbass driver in a shallow package, not a deep extension driver. Cabin gain below 50 Hz does real work here.

Performance, Performance Optimized, and Micro

Proline X builds three tiers of Down Fire enclosure. The difference is not finish or materials, it is whether the cabinet was designed for a category or for a driver, and how much of the fitting work is already done for you.

Feet ship with every tier, uninstalled on purpose. Mount them where your floor wants them for a down fire install, or leave them off and run the cabinet front firing or up firing. The orientation is yours to choose.

This page is a Performance Optimized enclosure. The airspace, the cutout and the cabinet height all come from the Diamond Audio DMD-SH 12's own published numbers. A Performance box fits your subwoofer. A Performance Optimized box was built for it.

Built Around the DMD-SH 12

Nothing about this cabinet is generic. The baffle is bored to the DMD-SH 12's 11.06 inch cutout, and the driver needs only a 3.00 inch mounting depth, the same depth Diamond specifies for the 10 inch model. Stepping up from the 10 to the 12 in this series costs nothing in depth, only cutout diameter and about two inches of cabinet height. The finished box is 8.3125 inches tall on a 30 by 15 inch footprint, which puts a full 12 into cargo floors and rear wall positions where a conventional 12 will not go. Total driver diameter is 12.83 inches.

Diamond builds the DMD-SH on a die-cast shallow frame with a high-strength paper cone and an aluminum heatsink dust cap that pulls heat away from the coil. The pole is vented for cooler operation, the black spider carries woven tinsel leads, terminals are oversized push type, and a wrap-around ABS gasket seals the mounting flange against the baffle. Diamond states the motor and suspension symmetry are Klippel optimized.

The driver is sold in two coil configurations: the DMD122SH, dual 2 ohm, and the DMD124SH, dual 4 ohm. Both share the same 3.00 inch mounting depth and 11.06 inch cutout, so this cabinet is a direct fit for either one. Both are rated 300 watts RMS and 600 watts maximum.

Net Volume, Not Gross

We build this cabinet at 1.25 cubic feet net out of a machined cavity of 1.30 cubic feet gross. Diamond suggests 0.75 cubic feet for this driver, and we build larger on purpose. At their figure the DMD122SH computes to roughly Qtc 1.20 and the DMD124SH to above 1.42. At 1.25 net the alignment is better damped on both variants with 1 to 2 Hz more extension, and Diamond's own manual presents its enclosure table as a suggestion rather than a specification.

True net, not marketing net. Internal volume is calculated from the machined cavity dimensions and the driver's published displacement, not estimated from external dimensions minus wall thickness.

Coil choice matters more than usual on this driver. The DMD122SH runs a Qts of 0.77 with 13.7 T of motor force and 7.9mm of Xmax, and in 1.25 cubic feet it lands at Qtc 1.052 with F3 at 51.4 Hz. The DMD124SH runs a Qts of 0.91 with 16.4 T and 8.8mm, and lands at Qtc 1.246 with F3 at 53.6 Hz. System Qtc can never fall below the driver's own Qts in a sealed enclosure, so at a free-air Qts of 0.91 the D4 is underdamped in any sealed box regardless of volume. It is not a bad driver: it carries the stronger motor and the longer excursion. For sealed use the D2 is the better performer, and it is not close.

Where These Numbers Come From

The Qtc and F3 figures above are computed from the Thiele-Small parameters Diamond publishes, and they will not match the numbers printed in Diamond's enclosure table. Diamond lists the DMD122SH at Qtc 0.91 in 0.75 cubic feet. Run their own published Qts of 0.77 and Vas of 30.7 liters through standard sealed box math at that volume and the result is 1.20. Every variant is off in the same direction by roughly 0.2 to 0.3. That gap is too large to be a gross versus net convention issue; their T/S table and their enclosure table appear to have been produced independently. We publish what the driver data actually gives.

One limitation worth stating plainly: free-air resonance is 46.0 Hz on the D2 and 46.5 Hz on the D4. A sealed box raises the system corner above the driver's Fs, so F3 sits in the low 50s regardless of volume. This is a punch and midbass driver in a shallow package, not a deep extension driver. Firing down into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain below 60 Hz, and in-car response extends well below the anechoic figure.

Down Fire Construction

Cut with V-groove and dado joinery on our ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF, a dense 48.5 lb/ft³ board with a 200 psi internal bond and 410,000 psi MOE. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square on Down Fire cabinets.

Double Baffle, Flush Recess

The front baffle is 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That recovers 3/4 inch of internal clearance behind the cone.

Side-Mounted Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite cup with stainless hardware and copper ring terminals, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Side mounted so it stays accessible with the baffle facing the floor.

3 Inch Mounting Depth

Cabinet height here is set by the airspace, not by the driver. At 8.3125 inches tall the box carries 1.25 cubic feet under a 12.83 inch driver on a 30 by 15 footprint, with perimeter cross-bracing across the long panels and polyfill pre-installed.

Power and Warranty

Diamond rates the DMD-SH 12 at 300 watts RMS and 600 watts maximum. Both coil variants are dual voice coil, so you set final impedance at the driver: series or parallel, 2 ohm or 4 ohm coils, whichever your amplifier is stable into.

The enclosure carries a 1 year limited warranty. Bring your own DMD122SH or DMD124SH; the driver is purchased separately. Cutout and mounting depth are a direct fit for either version.

This enclosure holds 1.25 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Diamond Audio DMD122SH runs a system Qtc of 1.05–1.25 with half power at 46.4–48.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 7.9 mm travel limit at 250 W, below the driver’s 300 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 251 W — +2 W, or 1 percent more power for the same 7.9 mm of travel.

The DMD122SH straddles the boundary at 45.6–54.8 depending on coil — part sealed-band, part transition. Either way it takes a sealed load happily; the coil you run shifts the alignment more than it shifts this verdict.

The box lifts resonance from 46.0 Hz free-air to 63–64 Hz and half power lands at 46.4–48.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 7.9 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 7.9 mm. Unfiltered that is 250 W, reached first at 47 Hz. It sits under the 300 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 251 W before hitting the same 7.9 mm. That is 1 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.
