Check your build date before you order
Rainbow built three versions of this kit for three Model 3 wiring configurations: part 280109 for 2020, 280078 for 2021, and 280107 for 2022. Tesla's production changes do not line up with model years, so a late 2020 car may need the 2021 harness and an early 2022 build may need the 2021. Send us the build date from your door jamb sticker, or your VIN, and we will confirm which version we can supply before you commit. On a final sale, this is the step that matters most.
What You Are Buying
A complete Model 3 audio system rather than a set of speakers. Everything connects to the factory harness with plug-in connectors, so there is no cutting or splicing into Tesla wiring.
- L10.1 DSP amplifier. Eight high-level inputs, outputs configured as 8 x 50W, 2 x 150W and 1 x 300W. 32-bit DSP with Rainbow's Model 3 tuning loaded.
- 10 inch dual 2 Ohm subwoofer in a sealed ABS and fibre composite enclosure moulded to the Model 3 trunk floor.
- 1 inch natural silk dome tweeters, a pair, for the factory tweeter locations.
- Vehicle-specific harnesses matched to your build.
- Tesla integration module with 107 Ohm high-level input matching.
- Mounting hardware and documentation.
The Amplifier
The L10.1 takes speaker-level input from the factory system, which is the only sensible approach in a Tesla because there is no head unit to replace and no preamp output to tap.
Output configuration
8 x 50W, 2 x 150W, 1 x 300W as published. We are quoting the per-channel configuration rather than a headline system total, because Rainbow's published totals do not reconcile with the sum of the channel ratings. The channel figures are the ones to plan against.
107 Ohm input impedance, 28Vpp sensitivity
These two numbers are why a Tesla-specific amplifier exists. A generic high-level input expects a different source impedance and a different signal level, and getting either wrong produces a frequency response that is not flat before the DSP has done anything. Matching them is unglamorous engineering and it is the part of this kit that a universal system cannot replicate.
20Hz to 20kHz plus or minus 0.5dB, SNR at or above 90dB, THD at or below 0.01 percent
Note the tolerance on the frequency response. A bandwidth figure without a tolerance means nothing, and most published ones do not carry it.
Physical
294 x 128 x 52mm, 9V to 16V operating range off the Tesla 12V auxiliary battery.
The Subwoofer
10 inch non-pressed paper cone, dual 2 Ohm voice coils, 80W plus 80W RMS with 160W plus 160W peak, sealed enclosure, 33Hz to 600Hz.
83dB sensitivity, and why it is low on purpose
83dB is well below what an SPL-oriented 10 would measure. That is a design choice, not a shortfall. Lower sensitivity in a subwoofer generally means heavier moving mass and a tighter suspension, and those give you a driver that starts and stops with the signal instead of continuing after it. The 300W amplifier channel is there to pay for the sensitivity.
The 600Hz upper limit
Unusual, and deliberate. Rainbow runs the subwoofer well up into the lower midrange to cover the midbass the Model 3 door speakers cannot produce. If you have heard a Model 3 sound thin between roughly 60 and 250Hz, that gap is what this addresses.
The enclosure
Sealed, moulded from ABS and fibre composite to the shape of the Model 3 trunk floor, using the dead space behind the wheel well. It does not cost you cargo capacity and it does not require removing the factory carpet.
We build MDF enclosures here, so we will be straight about the trade: composite is dimensionally stable across temperature and does not care about moisture, which matters in a trunk floor. MDF is stiffer per unit thickness. For a moulded shape that has to follow a car's contours, composite is the right call and MDF is not an option at all.
The Tweeters
1 inch natural silk domes, 4 Ohm, 10W continuous and 20W peak each, mounting in the factory tweeter locations. Silk rather than metal, which suits a cabin with a glass roof and very little soft trim.
What this kit does not include
Door midbass drivers. The system pairs the factory door speakers with a subwoofer that reaches to 600Hz and new tweeters. If you want to replace the door drivers as well, that is a separate conversation and it changes the DSP tuning, so talk to us first.
Who This Suits
Buy this if
- You own a 2020 to 2022 Model 3 and can confirm your build date.
- You want a complete system rather than a speaker swap.
- You want no cutting or splicing into Tesla wiring.
- You accept a final sale on a discontinued product with no warranty path.
Look elsewhere if
- Your Model 3 is outside the 2020 to 2022 range, or you cannot verify the build.
- You want maximum SPL. This is tuned for accuracy, and the subwoofer sensitivity says so.
- You want to design your own DSP tuning from scratch.
- You want warranty coverage or the option to return.
Installation
- Confirm the version against your build date before anything is unboxed. A harness for the wrong year will not plug in and the sale is final.
- The amplifier runs off the 12V auxiliary battery. Follow Tesla's own procedure for working around the high voltage system; nothing in this kit touches it, but the service disconnect discipline still applies.
- Mount the amplifier where air can move around it. 294mm of chassis in a sealed cavity will heat-soak.
- The subwoofer enclosure locates to the trunk floor contour. Test-fit before securing anything.
- The DSP arrives with Rainbow's Model 3 tuning loaded. Listen to it as delivered before you change anything.
Condition and sale terms
Closeout stock from a discontinued Rainbow line. Sold as a final sale with no returns, no exchanges and no manufacturer warranty. Packaging may show shelf wear from storage. Specifications are as published by Rainbow; where the published system totals did not reconcile with the sum of the individual channel ratings, only the channel ratings are quoted. Version availability is subject to remaining stock and must be confirmed against your vehicle before purchase. Once remaining stock is gone this listing will be removed.
