What a Centre Channel Actually Does in a Car

In a car you sit on one side of the cabin, so the near speaker arrives earlier and louder than the far one. The result is a stage that collapses toward the driver's door, with vocals sitting somewhere over your left shoulder instead of in front of you.

A centre channel puts a real source in the middle of the dash. Fed a summed or processed centre signal, it anchors vocals to the centre of the windscreen and pulls the stage back where it belongs. It is not a substitute for time alignment, and it is not a substitute for good door speakers. It is a third tool that works on a problem the other two only partly solve.

You need somewhere to get a centre signal from

This is a passive speaker. It has no processing of its own. To use it properly you need a DSP with a centre output, or at minimum an amplifier channel fed a summed left plus right signal with a high-pass on it. Wiring it in parallel with a door speaker will produce output, but it will not produce the effect you bought it for.

Reading the Specification

250Hz to 20kHz

The 250Hz floor is the important number. This is a midrange and treble device, not a full-range speaker. Everything below 250Hz has to come from the doors and the subwoofer, and the crossover has to be set accordingly. Feeding it below 250Hz will not add bass; it will only damage a small driver in a small box.

30W maximum, 4 Ohm

Low power, which suits the job. A centre channel is there to fill the middle, not to be the loudest thing in the car. If you find yourself wanting to give it more than 30W, the level balance is wrong somewhere else.

111 x 82 x 32mm

Small enough to sit against the base of the windscreen on most dashes without blocking the view or triggering an airbag conflict. Check your own dash for a passenger airbag deployment path before you commit to a location.

Running More Than One

These are not limited to centre duty. Two or three of them can be used for rear or side fill in a surround setup, since each is a self-contained sealed enclosure with a standard 4 Ohm load. Work out your total impedance before wiring several to one channel.

Who This Suits

Buy this if

  • You have a DSP with a centre channel output and nothing to feed it.
  • Your stage collapses toward the driver's door and time alignment has not fixed it.
  • You want a dash speaker that does not require cutting the dash.
  • You accept a final sale on a discontinued product with no warranty path.

Look elsewhere if

  • You have no way to generate a centre signal.
  • You expect it to add bass. 250Hz is the floor.
  • You want a flush, factory-looking dash install.
  • You want warranty coverage or the option to return.

Installation

  • Check the passenger airbag deployment path before choosing a dash location. Nothing goes on that panel.
  • High-pass at 250Hz or above. On a DSP, 300Hz with a steep slope is a safe starting point.
  • Set the centre level last, after the front stage is balanced. Start with it too low and bring it up until the vocal moves to the middle, then stop.
  • Run the wire under the dash trim rather than across it. A visible wire to a small dash speaker is what makes an install look unfinished.
