Q: How deep is the JBL Club 102SL?

It needs 3-1/4 inches (82.5 mm) of mounting depth behind the mounting surface, with a 9 inch cutout. The flange adds 21/32 of an inch above the surface and the overall diameter is 10-1/2 inches.

Q: What box does the Club 102SL need?

JBL recommends 0.53 cubic feet net for both sealed and ported. The sealed range is 0.42 to 0.69 cubic feet. The ported box uses one 2.76 inch round port 9.84 inches long, tuned to 43.4 Hz. It also works free-air and in bandpass boxes.

Q: How does the SSI impedance switch work?

The Selectable Smart Impedance switch on the terminal sets the woofer to 2 or 4 ohms with no rewiring. Use 2 ohms on a 2 ohm stable mono amp for the most power, or set two woofers to 4 ohms and parallel them for a 2 ohm load. Turn the amp off before switching. Power handling is the same either way.

Q: How much power does the Club 102SL handle?

Its Qts is high (1.22 at 2 ohms, 1.10 at 4 ohms), so it plays well in a small sealed box but with a full, punchy upper-bass character: in 0.53 cubic feet sealed, system Q works out near 1.8 to 1.9. JBL's ported box in the same 0.53 cubic feet, tuned to 43.4 Hz, gives deeper extension. Choose sealed when space is tight, ported when you want more low end.

Q: Does Audio Intensity build a box for the Club 102SL?

Yes, four, all built in Tullahoma, Tennessee at 0.60 cubic feet net per driver: a sealed 10 inch wedge, a sealed dual 10 inch wedge, a sealed 10 inch down fire and a sealed dual 10 inch down fire. Because the Club 102SL is a high-Q woofer, every sealed box gives it a full, punchy upper-bass character rather than a flat alignment.

Q: Is the Club 102SL a dual voice coil subwoofer?

No. It has a single 2 inch voice coil, and the SSI switch changes its impedance between 2 and 4 ohms. You get the load flexibility of a dual coil woofer without wiring the coils yourself.

INSTALLER'S TAKE

The Club 102SL is for the spaces where depth is the problem: behind a truck seat, under a floor, in a thin sealed box. At 3-1/4 inches deep and 350 watts it gives real bass where a regular 10 will not fit, and the impedance switch means you can match almost any mono amp without rewiring.

It is a high-Q driver, so a small sealed box will sound full and punchy rather than deep. If you want more low end and have a little room for a port, build JBL's ported box tuned to 43.4 Hz. Run it at 4 ohms sealed for the tightest result.

JBL Club 102SL 10 Inch Shallow Subwoofer

A 10 inch subwoofer that needs only 3-1/4 inches of mounting depth, with a switch on the terminal cup that sets it to 2 or 4 ohms. The Club 102SL handles 350 watts RMS on an aluminum cone and fits the thin sealed boxes, behind-seat enclosures and door or floor panels a full-depth 10 cannot.

One Coil, Two Loads

JBL's Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI) switch sits on the input terminal. Flip it to 2 ohms to get more power from a mono amplifier, or to 4 ohms to run a pair in parallel at 2 ohms. There are no jumpers to wire and no coil math. Turn the amplifier off before you change it. Power handling is the same 350 watts RMS and 1050 watts peak in either setting.

One woofer: 2 ohm setting on a 2 ohm stable mono amp, or 4 ohms if the amp is not 2 ohm stable.

Two woofers: both at 4 ohms, paralleled, for a 2 ohm load. Both at 2 ohms in parallel give 1 ohm.

Built Shallow

The cone is JBL's own aluminum design, made to hold its shape at full excursion so the woofer stays clean when pushed. It rides on a rubber surround in a steel basket with a vented motor that keeps the 2 inch voice coil cool at high output. Cutout is 9 inches, overall diameter 10-1/2 inches, and the flange sits 21/32 of an inch above the mounting surface. No grille is included.

With a Qts of 1.22 at 2 ohms and 1.10 at 4 ohms, this is a high-Q woofer built for small spaces. In JBL's 0.53 cubic foot sealed box the standard formula puts system Q near 1.8 to 1.9 and resonance around 57 to 58 Hz, so expect punchy, full upper bass rather than deep, flat extension. The 4 ohm setting has the lower Qts and is the slightly tighter choice sealed. For more low end in the same space, JBL's ported box tuned to 43.4 Hz digs deeper.
