How much power does a subwoofer actually need?
A subwoofer wants amplifier power equal to 1.2 to 1.5 times its RMS rating. A 500W RMS sub is happy on 600 to 750W. That extra headroom lets the amp reproduce dynamic peaks cleanly instead of running flat out and clipping. The number that matters is RMS, the continuous rating. Ignore the peak sticker on the box.

What is the power matching formula?
The formula is simple: Amplifier RMS = Subwoofer RMS × 1.2 to 1.5. Use the low end (1.2x) if your electrical system is stock or you listen at moderate volume. Use the high end (1.5x) for a daily driver you push hard, since the reserve keeps the signal clean when the music gets demanding. Going past 2x RMS is where you risk pushing the sub past its mechanical limits, so that is the ceiling, not a target.
Why does headroom protect the sub instead of endangering it? Because the thing that destroys subwoofers is not clean watts, it's clipped ones. When a small amp runs out of clean output and you keep turning it up, the waveform flattens and dumps sustained energy into the voice coil as heat. An amp with headroom simply reproduces the peak and moves on.
Class D or Class AB: which amplifier for a subwoofer?
For subwoofer duty, a Class D monoblock is the default choice. Class D amplifiers run 85 to 95% efficient, so most of the current from your electrical system becomes bass instead of heat. That means less strain on the alternator, a smaller chassis, and cooler operation under load. Class AB runs closer to 50 to 70% efficient and gives off real heat, which is why you see it more on the front stage for sound quality than on a sub.

When Class AB still makes sense
A full-range Class AB monoblock earns its place on a sound-quality sub, where a competitor wants the linearity of a traditional output stage feeding a sealed 10 or 12. It draws more current and needs more airflow, so plan the install around that. For the vast majority of builds, though, Class D gives you the same usable output with far less electrical headache.

How do you wire and fuse a subwoofer amp?
Size the power and ground wire to the amp's output, and put the main fuse within 18 inches of the battery positive. Undersized wire is the most common install mistake we see: it starves the amp, drops voltage under load, and makes even a good amp sound weak. Ground to bare, sanded metal with the same gauge you ran for power.

Get the impedance right before you wire it
A monoblock is only stable down to a rated impedance, so wire the sub to a load it can hold. Two 2-ohm voice coils in parallel present a 1-ohm load. Two 4-ohm coils in parallel present 2 ohms. Two 2-ohm coils in series present 4 ohms. Check the amp's stable impedance, then wire the coils to hit it. That's where the rated power actually comes from.
How do you set the gain without clipping?
The gain is a level-matching control, not a volume knob. Set it with a multimeter or an oscilloscope, not by ear, because a clipped signal often sounds loud right up until it kills the coil. Turn the head unit to about 75% of its maximum, play a test tone at the sub's tuning frequency, and raise the gain only until the amp reaches its clean target voltage. That's it.
We set the gain on every system before it leaves the shop, and it's the single step most DIY installs skip. Do it right and a modest amp sounds tight and controlled. Skip it and even a big amp will sound harsh and run hot.
Troubleshooting weak bass and thermal shutdown
Problem: not enough output
Start at the wire, not the sub. Confirm the amp's power actually matches the sub's RMS, then measure voltage at the amp under load: a big sag points to undersized wire or a weak ground. Check that the gain is set correctly and the low-pass and subsonic filters are dialed in. Nine times out of ten, weak bass is a wiring or gain problem, not a driver problem.
Problem: amp goes into thermal protection
An amp that shuts down on heat is usually seeing a load below its rating, choking on poor airflow, or being driven into clipping by too much gain. Verify the wired impedance is one the amp is stable at, give it room to breathe, and re-check the gain. A Class D monoblock that's correctly loaded and correctly set should stay cool even on a hard demo.
