INSTALLER'S TAKE

The 10TW3-D4 earns its position in under-seat builds because of two specific numbers: 3.25 inches of mounting depth and 15.2mm of Xmax. Most shallow-mount 10s give you one or the other at this depth. JL Audio's concentric tube motor design delivers both, which is why this driver has been the standard recommendation for crew cab trucks and under-seat SUV builds for years.

The 0.50 cubic foot sealed recommendation is compact by any measure. An enclosure 30 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 3.5 inches internal height gives you right around 0.50 cubic feet and fits cleanly under most rear seats. That produces Qtc 0.96 and F3 just over 40 Hz, which is a slightly warm alignment with good upper bass presence. If you have space for 0.75 cubic feet, the response flattens out to Qtc 0.86 and gets you a few Hz more extension. Both are usable; build to whatever volume your installation allows within the 0.50 to 0.75 range.

Wire the D4 in parallel for 2 ohms. That is where your monoblock makes its rated power and where the TW3 gets what it needs. Gain set clean, crossover around 80 Hz at 24 dB, and this driver integrates with a front stage without calling attention to itself. That is the job, and it does it well.

JL Audio TW3 Thin-Line Series

JL Audio 10TW3-D4 10 Inch Subwoofer

400 watts RMS from 3.25 inches of mounting depth. The 10TW3-D4 uses JL Audio's patented Thin-Line technology to deliver 15.2mm of one-way Xmax, a Polymer/Mica composite cone, and a cast alloy frame in enclosures as small as 0.50 cubic feet.

400W RMS 3.25 in Depth 15.2mm Xmax Dual 4-Ohm

Patented Thin-Line Technology

Standard subwoofer designs require the motor structure to sit below the cone assembly, which is why conventional 10 inch drivers need 5 to 7 inches of mounting depth. JL Audio's patented Thin-Line design inverts this geometry using a concentric tube structure built into the injection-molded cone body. This structure supports the voice coil and a full annular spider while allowing the motor to be positioned further forward in the frame than conventional designs permit. The result is 3.25 inches of mounting depth with 15.2mm of one-way linear Xmax, an excursion capability JL Audio notes exceeds their standard-depth W3v3 series.

The tab-ear mounting system accommodates a range of installation methods and maximizes usable cone area within the mounting footprint, which matters when enclosure dimensions are tight.

15.2mm Xmax in 3.25 Inches

Shallow-mount subwoofers typically trade excursion for depth. Less mounting depth means less space for the voice coil former, which reduces how far the cone can travel linearly before distortion. JL Audio's concentric tube design breaks that tradeoff. The 10TW3-D4's 15.2mm one-way Xmax is not just competitive for a shallow-mount driver; it exceeds the W3v3 series, JL Audio's standard-depth predecessor, in linear excursion capability. That is the engineering payoff of Thin-Line technology applied to a real product.

The Polymer/Mica composite cone provides the stiffness-to-weight balance needed to take advantage of that excursion without introducing resonance modes at the higher frequencies where the TW3 operates when integrating with a front stage.

Optimized for Small Sealed Enclosures

JL Audio designed the TW3 series specifically for small enclosures. The optimum sealed volume is 0.50 cubic feet, which is compact enough to fit under most truck and SUV rear seats with enclosure heights as shallow as 4 to 4.5 inches total. The no-pole-vent motor design allows the driver to mount with minimal rear clearance, 0.25 inches is sufficient, which maximizes every available inch of internal enclosure volume. The Thin-Line motor has no center vent that could be blocked by a close rear wall.

Ported Option

JL Audio specifies a minimum of 0.75 cubic feet for ported enclosures, with 30 Hz as the recommended port tuning. Ported designs provide additional output in the 30-40 Hz range but require larger enclosures and add port tuning complexity. For most under-seat and shallow custom enclosure installations where the TW3 excels, sealed is the practical choice. For builds where the larger enclosure volume is available and maximum output matters, the ported option is fully supported.

Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 3.25 inches, cutout 9.625 inches, overall major diameter 11.2 inches, weight 8.8 lbs. Optimum sealed 0.50 cu ft, ported minimum 0.75 cu ft. Tab-ear mounting. Minimum rear clearance 0.25 inches. Wire the dual 4-ohm voice coil parallel for 2 ohms or series for 8 ohms.

D4 vs D8 Variants

JL Audio offers the TW3 in both Dual 4-ohm (10TW3-D4) and Dual 8-ohm (10TW3-D8) configurations. Audio Intensity stocks the D4 as the most broadly compatible variant. Wired parallel, the D4 presents 2 ohms to the amplifier, which suits the majority of 1-ohm stable Class D monoblocks at full output. Wired series, it presents 8 ohms, which suits bridged 4-channel amplifiers and specific system impedance requirements. If your system requires the D8 configuration, contact Audio Intensity for availability.

Sealed Enclosure Performance: Pre-Calculated Results

Using JL Audio's published Thiele-Small parameters and their recommended sealed volumes, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff for each box size. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator. These figures align with Pacific Stereo's published JL Audio enclosure data for the 0.50 cu ft alignment.

The 10TW3-D4 is a moderate-Qts driver that produces a slightly elevated Qtc in JL Audio's recommended 0.50 cu ft sealed volume. This gives the driver a warm, impactful character that works well in the under-seat and shallow-build applications it is designed for. At 0.75 cu ft the response flattens toward a more controlled alignment while still maintaining the TW3's characteristic bass presence. The F3 sits in the upper 30s across the range, solid extension for a shallow-mount 10.

About the enclosure recommendation: JL Audio specifies 0.50 cu ft as the optimum sealed volume for the 10TW3-D4, which produces Qtc 0.960 and F3 40 Hz. This is a deliberate design choice for under-seat builds where the compact enclosure dimension is the priority. For a flatter sealed response, a larger volume approaching 1.49 cu ft achieves Butterworth alignment, but that volume largely defeats the purpose of a shallow-mount driver. For ported installations, JL Audio recommends a minimum of 0.75 cu ft tuned to 30 Hz. Run your own numbers in the Sealed Box Calculator.

The Enclosures tab above lists JL Audio Stealthbox and other enclosure options for this driver. For a custom under-seat build, contact Audio Intensity with your vehicle and available dimensions.
