What You Are Buying
A previous generation SQ600.1D that served as a demonstration unit. It has been powered and used. It is not new stock and it is not being sold as new stock.
Image Dynamics is an active brand and we still carry them. This particular amplifier is a superseded model out of our own demo inventory, which is why it is priced where it is.
Condition, stated plainly
This unit has been used for demonstration. Expect cosmetic handling marks. It has been tested and functions. Warranty coverage on a demonstration unit is not the same as on new stock, so ask us before you buy rather than after. Sold as-is.
Reading the Power Ratings
Rated at 14.4V with THD under 0.4 percent, which is the correct way to publish amplifier power and not something every manufacturer bothers to state.
- 200W at 4 Ohm
- 400W at 2 Ohm
- 600W at 1 Ohm
Note the shape of that curve. Doubling from 4 to 2 Ohms gives exactly double. Halving again to 1 Ohm gives 1.5 times, not double. That is a real power supply behaving like a real power supply, and it is more informative than a sheet where every number doubles cleanly.
The 1200W figure on the sheet is peak music power and is not something to design a system around.
The 40-Click Controls
This is the feature that separates the SQ Series from most amplifiers at any price. The low-pass, subsonic and bass frequency controls are 40-detent rotaries rather than continuous pots, and the manual includes a chart mapping each click to a frequency.
What that buys you is repeatability. You can set the low-pass at an actual known frequency, write it down, and get back to it after somebody bumps the knob. On a continuous pot you are setting "somewhere near 80Hz" and you will never find the same spot twice. If you are matching an amplifier to a box with a known tuning frequency, this matters.
The filter ranges
- Low-pass 30Hz to 300Hz at 24dB/octave. A steep slope, which is what you want on a subwoofer channel to keep vocal range out of the box.
- Subsonic 10Hz to 50Hz at 12dB/octave. Set this 3 to 5Hz below your enclosure tuning if the box is ported. On a sealed box it is optional.
- Bass EQ 0 to plus 18dB, centred anywhere from 40 to 100Hz. 18dB is a great deal of boost. Every decibel there is a decibel of extra power the amplifier has to make and the driver has to survive.
- Phase switch, 0 or 180 degrees. Try both. On a rear-firing box in a hatchback the wrong one costs you real output at the crossover point.
Straight answer on the bass boost
Leave it at zero and set the gain properly. The boost is there for a specific problem, a cabin null at one frequency, not as a way to get more bass. Turning it up is the single most common way people destroy a subwoofer with an amplifier that was never going to be the problem.
The Rest of the Sheet
10Hz to 300Hz frequency response
Band-limited by design. This is a subwoofer amplifier and not a full-range channel pressed into service.
Input sensitivity 250mV to 10V, balanced RCA inputs
A wide gain range that accepts a weak head unit preout or a hot DSP output. Balanced inputs on a subwoofer amplifier help with the long RCA run from dash to trunk, which is where most alternator whine gets introduced.
Greater than 95dB signal to noise, THD under 0.4 percent
Both published as bounds. 95dB is genuinely good for a Class D monoblock.
Dual link bridging
Two SQ600.1D units link over an RJ11 cable in a master and slave arrangement for 1200W at a 2 Ohm minimum load. One amplifier keeps control of all the tuning. The cable is not included and it is a standard telephone cable.
Installation
- 8 AWG minimum power and ground for runs under 7 feet. Longer runs need heavier wire; the manual has the chart.
- 60A main fuse within 18 inches of the battery. The chassis carries two 30A ATC fuses of its own; those protect the amplifier, not the wire.
- 10 AWG minimum speaker wire.
- 1 Ohm minimum load standard, 2 Ohm minimum when externally bridged.
- Keep 2 inches of clearance around the heatsink and never mount it upside down. Class D runs cool, not cold, and an inverted heatsink cannot convect.
- Wired remote bass control connects on RJ12 and is included.

- You want repeatable, documented crossover settings rather than approximate ones.
- You are running a 1 or 2 Ohm subwoofer load and want 400 to 600W.
- You have room for a 7.25 by 10.5 inch chassis with airflow around it.
- You accept a used demonstration unit sold as-is.
Look elsewhere if
- You want a new unit with full warranty. Ask us about current Image Dynamics stock instead.
- You need a full-range amplifier. This is band-limited to 300Hz.
- You need more than 600W from a single chassis.
- Cosmetic condition matters to you.
