INSTALLER'S TAKE

The IDMAX12 V.4 is the middle child of the IDMAX platform and the size most competitors actually run. The 10" gets picked when depth or space is the constraint. The 15" gets picked when maximum output matters in a large vehicle. The 12" is where most SQ builds land because it hits the sweet spot between extension, output, and cabinet manageability.

Same construction as the IDMAX10: glass fiber reinforced pressed paper pulp cone, aluminum neck joint (real, structural), oversized ferrite motor, Nomex spider, parabolic Santoprene surround, American-made flat-wound extended voice coil, cast aluminum frame, field-replaceable cone assembly with 16 screws and no glue. 500 watts RMS continuous, 19.5mm one-way linear excursion, 545 cm² of cone area (44% more piston area than the IDMAX10), 8.15" mount depth.

Volume math: 1.94 cu ft gross minus the IDMAX12's 0.14 cu ft mounted displacement = 1.80 cu ft net. Image Dynamics publishes 1.8 cu ft as the Audiophile sealed alignment for the IDMAX12 platform. Direct hit on ID's published spec.

Qtc math using published T/S parameters: D2 (Qts 0.52, Vas 77.51 L, Fs 26.51 Hz) at 1.80 net lands Qtc near 0.83. Fc around 42 Hz, F3 around 37 Hz sealed. Slightly above Butterworth, controlled and flat. D4 (Qts 0.58, Vas 72.16 L, Fs 27.77 Hz) at 1.80 net lands Qtc near 0.90. Fc around 43 Hz, F3 around 36 Hz sealed. Slight upper-bass lift, warmer character, similar F3 to D2 because the higher Q resonance behavior offsets the higher Fs.

Here's the interesting thing that shoppers cross-shopping with the IDMAX10 build need to understand: the D2 vs D4 pattern is FLIPPED between the two sizes. On the IDMAX10, the D4 has lower Qts than D2, so D4 is the tighter overdamped choice. On the IDMAX12, the D4 has higher Qts than D2, so D4 is the warmer lifted choice. If you're used to picking the D4 for a specific character based on the 10" behavior, that will not carry over to the 12". Check the T/S params before assuming.

For the 12", the D2 is the flatter audiophile choice (Qtc 0.83, Butterworth-adjacent). The D4 is the warmer lifted choice (Qtc 0.90, elevated but still musical). Both reach essentially the same F3 near 36-37 Hz — that's genuinely deep for a 12" sealed alignment. Most 12" drivers need a ported box to reach F3 in the mid-30s. The IDMAX12 gets there sealed because of the low 26 Hz Fs.

Cabinet size: 27.35" wide, 15" tall, 10.3" deep at top, 15.77" deep at bottom. This is the widest cabinet in the entire PO Wedge line short of the 15" builds. Wider than every JL 12", wider than both RF 12" wedges, wider than both 15" builds actually (the 15" P3 is 24W and the 15" T1 is around 24W). Genuinely large. If your trunk is compact, verify clearance first — this box needs approximately 28" of usable trunk width.

Mounting: 8.15" mount depth. Deepest driver in the entire PO Wedge lineup. Cabinet top-face depth of 10.3" gives 1.87" clearance at the top edge, 4.14" at cabinet center. Comfortable. But this build assumes you have a trunk floor deep enough to accommodate the 15.77" bottom cabinet depth. Confirm before ordering.

Power target: 400-500 watts RMS. Same 500W rating as the IDMAX10, same audiophile-alignment caveat: reduced air-spring loading at 1.80 cu ft means excursion increases at the same input power vs a compact alignment, so plan for the mechanical limit before the thermal limit. A 500W class D monoblock is the right amp.

D2 impedance warning worth calling out explicitly: The IDMAX12 D2 has Re of 1.65 ohms per coil, which is unusually low. Wired in parallel the DC-measured impedance is around 0.83 ohms. Most amplifiers rated 1-ohm stable are actually tested at 1.0 ohm nominal, not 0.83. Some class D monoblocks tolerate sub-1-ohm operation fine, others go into thermal protection. Verify your amp's spec sheet before wiring the D2 in parallel. The D4 doesn't have this problem — parallel wiring is exactly 2 ohms, works with any modern class D monoblock.

Recommended amps: Rockford T500-1bdCP (500W @ 1 ohm, class D, well-regulated), Arc Audio X2 450.1 (450W @ 2 or 4 ohms), Wavtech monoblocks, Sundown SAM-500D. Set LPF around 70-90 Hz, subsonic 20-25 Hz, both at 24 dB/octave slope.

Cross-shopping context: at $329.99, this is $20 above the RF T1 12" wedge ($309.99) and $30 above the JL 12 W6 ($299.99). Comfortably below the 15" wedges. Reflects the significantly larger cabinet (40% more MDF than the RF T1 12"), the deeper mount depth accommodation, and the fact that it's a build sized for a competition-grade audiophile driver at ID's own Audiophile alignment target.

This is an enclosure-only listing. Bring your own IDMAX12 V.4 D2 or D4. Source from Image Dynamics or an authorized ID dealer.

If you want an IDMAX12 in the alignment ID engineered it for, and you have the trunk space for a serious cabinet, this is the box.

Performance Optimized Wedge | Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4

Single 12" Sealed Wedge | Audiophile Alignment for the Image Dynamics IDMAX 12 Competition Subwoofer

1.94 ft³ Gross 1.80 ft³ Net (Audiophile) Rear-Firing Wedge 27.35" × 15" × 10.3/15.77" V-Groove / Dado Built in Tennessee

The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 in an Audiophile-Tuned Sealed Cabinet

The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 is a competition-grade 12-inch subwoofer engineered for sound quality competitors and audiophile daily-driver builds. Glass fiber reinforced pressed paper pulp cone, aluminum neck joint for structural integrity under sustained excursion, oversized motor structure, Nomex spider suspension for thermal survival, parabolic Santoprene surround, American-made flat-wound extended voice coil, heavy-duty cast aluminum frame, and Image Dynamics' bolt-on field-replaceable cone assembly (16 screws, no glue, alignment shims included) that turns a blown cone into a fifteen-minute rebuild rather than a lost driver. 500 watts RMS continuous power handling, 19.5mm one-way linear excursion, 545 cm² of piston area, 2-inch voice coil, dual voice coil in either 2-ohm or 4-ohm configuration. The IDMAX12 is the middle driver in Image Dynamics' three-size IDMAX platform and the size most sound quality competitors choose for the balance of extension, output, and cabinet manageability.

The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 12 for Image Dynamics IDMAX 12 is engineered to Image Dynamics' Audiophile-tier sealed alignment. 1.94 cubic feet gross internal volume minus the IDMAX12's 0.14 cubic foot total driver displacement lands at 1.80 cubic feet net — exact match to Image Dynamics' published Audiophile spec of 1.8 cu ft for the IDMAX12 platform. This is not the compact-cabinet alignment. This is where the IDMAX12 was designed to live.

1.94 cubic feet gross = 1.80 cubic feet net after the IDMAX12 V.4's 0.14 cubic foot total driver displacement. Exact match to Image Dynamics' Audiophile-tier sealed spec of 1.8 cu ft. The D2 variant lands near Butterworth (Qtc ~0.83) with F3 around 37 Hz sealed. The D4 variant runs with a slight lift (Qtc ~0.90) and reaches F3 near 36 Hz. Both alignments extend well below what a 12" driver typically reaches in a car audio sealed enclosure.

Trunk-Load Wedge Design Explained

This wedge is not a front-firing enclosure. The woofer is mounted on the vertical face that sits at the back of the box, closest to the trunk lid, and fires rearward into the trunk cavity. The angled face is on the opposite side of the box — the side that faces the front of the vehicle — and tucks against the rear seat back. Two different problems solved by one geometry, applied here to a driver that rewards the trunk-load approach with the extension and control an audiophile alignment can deliver.

Seat-Side Face Matches Seat Lean

Most factory rear seat backs lean roughly 20 degrees back from vertical. The angled face of this wedge (10.3" at the top, 15.77" at the bottom) matches that lean, tucking against the seat back with no wasted gap. The IDMAX12's 8.15" mount depth is accommodated by the top face without pushing the driver into cabin space.

Trunk-Lid-Side Face Fires the Woofer

The vertical face on the opposite side of the wedge (27.35" wide × 15" tall) is where the IDMAX12 mounts. The driver fires rearward toward the trunk lid, using the trunk cavity as an acoustic loading chamber. Classic SQ trunk-load pattern applied to a competition-grade audiophile driver.

Trunk Cavity Loading Complements Audiophile Alignment

Firing the woofer into the trunk cavity uses the trunk itself as an extension of the acoustic system. Low frequencies transmit into the passenger cabin through the rear deck, seat back, and cabin boundaries — a smoother, less-localized presentation than direct-firing setups. The 1.80 cu ft net audiophile alignment complements this by delivering extended low-end that the trunk cavity translates into deep, controlled cabin response.

Widest Cabinet in the 10-12" PO Wedge Line

27.35" wide by 15" tall by 10.3-15.77" deep. Genuinely large. This is the widest cabinet in the Performance Optimized Wedge line short of the 15" builds — wider than every 10" and 12" wedge in the catalog. The larger footprint is not incidental — it is the price of the audiophile alignment. Verify trunk clearance before ordering.

Audiophile Alignment Explained | Why 1.80 Cubic Feet Net

Image Dynamics publishes three sealed alignments for the IDMAX12 platform in the V.4 series manual — a Compact alignment (0.65 cu ft) for maximum power handling in constrained installs, a Universal alignment (1.0 cu ft) for balanced performance, and the Audiophile alignment (1.8 cu ft) for maximum extension and lowest Qtc. Each alignment produces a different acoustic character with different power handling ceilings and different F3 targets. The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 12 is engineered to the Audiophile alignment target exactly.

Predicted Alignment at 1.80 Cubic Feet Net

Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters for the IDMAX12 V.4, calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator, here is what the Audiophile alignment produces for each impedance variant:

Variant Qts Vas Qtc @ 1.80 ft³ Fc F3 Character
IDMAX12 V.4 D2 0.52 77.51 L 0.83 42 Hz ~37 Hz Butterworth-adjacent, flattest response
IDMAX12 V.4 D4 0.58 72.16 L 0.90 43 Hz ~36 Hz Slight lift, warmer, similar F3

Both alignments are legitimate audiophile territory. The D2 sits slightly above classic Butterworth (Qtc 0.707) for a controlled, accurate response with the flattest character available from an IDMAX in this alignment. The D4 runs modestly higher Qtc for a warmer character with a slight upper-bass lift, and interestingly reaches similar F3 to the D2 despite the higher Qtc — because the D4's slightly higher Fs is offset by the higher-Q resonance behavior. Neither variant produces the punchy midbass-forward character of a compact-cabinet alignment. This cabinet is built for the extended, controlled side of the IDMAX12's capabilities.

D2 vs D4 Selection Note

An important point that differs from the IDMAX10 build: on the IDMAX12, the D4 runs a higher Qts than the D2 (0.58 vs 0.52), which produces the higher Qtc alignment. On the IDMAX10, the pattern was reversed (D4 Qts 0.44 was lower than D2 0.50). This means on the IDMAX12 the D2 is the flatter, more Butterworth-adjacent choice, while on the IDMAX10 the D4 was the tighter overdamped choice. If you are cross-shopping between the two sizes and want the flattest audiophile character in either, that means D4 on the 10" or D2 on the 12". If you want a slight warmer midbass lift, that means D2 on the 10" or D4 on the 12".

What Audiophile Alignment Trades Against

The extended low-end and controlled Qtc come with real trade-offs worth understanding before you order. Cabinet size is significantly larger than a compact 12" enclosure — 27.35" wide, taking up meaningful trunk space. Power handling in a larger cabinet is lower than in a compact alignment because reduced air-spring loading allows greater cone excursion at the same input power — plan for 400-500 watts RMS input rather than pushing the driver's 500W thermal limit continuously. Efficiency is slightly lower — cabin gain and vehicle acoustics matter more when the cabinet does not add its own peak. The audiophile alignment is the right answer when accuracy and extension matter more than compact fitment or maximum output.

Impedance and Amplifier Matching

The D2 wired in parallel presents a 1-ohm load — pair it with a modern class D monoblock stable at 1 ohm delivering 400-500 watts RMS. The D4 wired in parallel presents a 2-ohm load — pair it with a class D monoblock delivering 400-500 watts RMS at 2 ohms. Both variants fit this cabinet identically since the physical dimensions and displacement are the same across the DVC configurations.

Mounting Geometry and Driver Fitment

The vertical trunk-lid-side baffle is cut to the IDMAX12 V.4's exact 11.02" cutout specification. The IDMAX12's 8.15" mounting depth fits inside the cabinet with proper clearance — internal depth from the vertical baffle to the interior of the angled seat-side face ranges from approximately 9.55" at the top baffle edge to 15.02" at the bottom (after accounting for 3/4" MDF panel thickness), with the driver's mounting position at cabinet center providing over 12.28" of clearance behind the motor. Substantial room for the IDMAX12's large motor structure and heavy backplate.

Performance Series Construction, Built for Sustained IDMAX Operation

Langboard Elite MDF

Premium 3/4" MDF panels milled to documented spec — denser and more dimensionally stable than commodity MDF. Panel resonance at the low frequencies the IDMAX12 audiophile alignment reaches would color the character of a driver chosen specifically for accuracy. Langboard's density stops the panels from adding their own signature to the driver's output.

V-Groove and Dado Joinery

CNC-cut V-grooves at every panel intersection let the wedge cabinet fold into its angled shape with maximum glue surface. Dado joints lock the vertical woofer baffle and the angled seat-side panel into the side walls — no fasteners visible from outside, no exposed end grain at joints, no compromise on structural integrity under sustained low-frequency loading.

Internal Bracing at Larger Cabinet Span

The 27.35" wide baffle span requires internal cross-bracing to prevent flex under IDMAX-level cone motion. Perimeter cross-brace ties the vertical baffle to the angled seat-side panel at the mid-height. Standard on this cabinet as delivered.

Pre-Wired Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS/carbon fiber composite terminal cup, pre-wired with 12-gauge OFC inside the cabinet, with stainless steel hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations on the input side. Handles the IDMAX12's 500W RMS power delivery.

Every panel is cut on ShopSabre CNC routers in our Tullahoma, TN facility. The angled seat-side panel requires precise CNC compound cuts to hit both the 1.80 cu ft net audiophile alignment target and the mating angles between the top and bottom edges. Internal volume is verified on every unit to ensure the audiophile-alignment target is achieved.

Customize Your Build

Carpet Finish

Dark Gray Trunkliner is the standard durable wrap, matched to most factory trunk and cargo-area carpet tones. Plush Black (+$10) is a deeper, more luxurious nap that pairs well with blacked-out interiors and show builds.

Acrylic Insert Color

Choose Black, Blue, Red, or White for the baffle insert to match your build. Or skip the insert entirely (-$40) for a clean, understated look. The insert is purely cosmetic — performance is identical across colors.

Enclosure Only

This listing is for the enclosure only. Drop in your existing Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 D2 (Dual 2-ohm) or IDMAX12 V.4 D4 (Dual 4-ohm) subwoofer — the cabinet fits both variants identically. Source your driver from Image Dynamics or an authorized ID dealer.

Wiring the Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 to Your Amplifier

The IDMAX12 V.4 is a dual-voice-coil driver available in two impedance configurations. The pre-wired terminal cup accepts the two-conductor connection via 12-gauge OFC, with stainless steel input hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations.

IDMAX12 V.4 D2 (Dual 2-ohm): Parallel wiring presents a 1-ohm load — ideal for modern class D monoblocks stable at 1 ohm delivering 400-500 watts RMS at that impedance. Series wiring presents 4 ohms if your amplifier is not 1-ohm stable. Note that the IDMAX12 D2 has Re of 1.65 ohms per coil, giving a combined parallel load closer to 0.83 ohms measured — verify your amplifier is rated for sub-1-ohm operation before wiring parallel.

IDMAX12 V.4 D4 (Dual 4-ohm): Parallel wiring presents a 2-ohm load — compatible with essentially all class D monoblocks. Series wiring presents 8 ohms for amplifiers that prefer higher impedance loads. The D4 is generally the easier match for standard mainstream amplifiers, especially given the D2's sub-1-ohm parallel measured impedance.

The IDMAX12 is rated for 500 watts RMS continuous. In the audiophile 1.80 cu ft alignment, the reduced air-spring loading means the driver reaches its mechanical excursion limit before its thermal limit — plan for 400-500 watts RMS input from a well-regulated class D monoblock rather than pushing continuous operation at or above the thermal rating. Set your amplifier's active low-pass filter between 70 and 90 Hz for musical accuracy in a full-range system. Subsonic filter around 20-25 Hz to protect the mechanical suspension at frequencies well below the alignment's Fc.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements — and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.
