Sony's Mobile ES Series doesn't get enough credit in the SQ world. The XS-W104ES is a genuinely refined driver — the cone composition (mica flake, aramid, pulp with a honeycomb core) is engineered for low coloration, and the separated-notch rubber surround keeps the suspension behaving consistently across temperature swings. It's not the loudest 10 you can buy. It's one of the cleanest.

That refinement is exactly why the box matters. A driver this well-engineered shows up its own enclosure faster than a brawler-spec SPL sub will. Run an XS-W104ES in a generic 0.6 or 0.75 cu ft sealed box and you'll wonder why everyone praises Sony's ES Series. Run it in a properly sized 1.0 cu ft sealed cabinet — like this one — and the answer becomes obvious. Tight transients, honest tonality, and a midbass region that integrates cleanly with quality components.

The 9.5" cabinet depth on this PO box is intentional. The Sony's mounting depth is just under 5.5", and the baffle and back wall need enough internal clearance to keep airflow around the magnet structure clean. Some generic 10" boxes run shallower than this and end up with the magnet two inches from the back panel — fine for cheap drivers, not fine for one engineered to Sony's standards.

The single 4-ohm voice coil also keeps the wiring conversation simple. No D2 vs D4 deliberation, no parallel/series math. One driver, one impedance, one wiring path. Pair it with a clean monoblock putting 350-450 watts RMS into 4 ohms and you're done. Sony's own Mobile ES amplifiers are the ideal match if you want a fully matched system, but any quality 4-ohm-stable monoblock will get you there.

The Sony XS-W104ES Deserves a Box Built for It

Sony's Mobile ES Series represents the pinnacle of their car audio engineering. The XS-W104ES is built around a mica flake / aramid fiber / pulp cone with a honeycomb core, separated-notch rubber surround, and a 450-watt RMS power rating that demands a properly sized cabinet to deliver on its potential. Drop it in a generic box and you'll get good bass. Drop it in a cabinet engineered around its intended sealed alignment and you'll hear what the Mobile ES Series was designed to do.

The Performance Optimized Sealed 10 for Sony ES is that cabinet. Internal volume, baffle thickness, and mounting hardware are all chosen to extract the XS-W104ES's full mechanical and acoustic potential — not approximated, not averaged across a class of 10s, not adapted from a universal box.

Engineered Around the XS-W104ES

The Sony Mobile ES Series 10" performs best in a sealed cabinet that gives the cone the right air spring without overdamping the response. 1.0 cu ft net is where the XS-W104ES settles into its intended SQ-oriented sealed alignment — tight, articulate transients on kick drums and bass guitar, controlled low-end extension, and the tonal accuracy Sony engineered the Mobile ES Series cone composition to deliver.

Volume Selection

1.0 cu ft net is the airspace that lets the Sony cone work cleanly without fighting the cabinet. Smaller volumes overdamp the response and dry out the bottom end. Larger volumes loosen Qtc and compromise the Sony's signature controlled presentation. 1.0 cu ft is the SQ-oriented sweet spot for the Mobile ES Series 10.

Mounting Geometry

The baffle is cut to the XS-W104ES's exact direct-fit specification. The 5.382" mounting depth on the Sony leaves comfortable internal clearance behind the magnet structure inside the 9.5" deep cabinet. No interference, no airspace robbed by a deep motor.

Performance Series Construction, Driver-Specific Tuning

Langboard Elite MDF

Premium 3/4" MDF panels milled to documented spec — denser and more dimensionally stable than commodity MDF. Less panel resonance, tighter joints, and a longer service life under daily use at real power levels.

V-Groove and Dado Joinery

CNC-cut V-grooves at every panel intersection let the cabinet fold into shape with maximum glue surface. Dado joints lock the baffle and rear panel into the side walls — no fasteners visible from outside.

8/32 Threaded Inserts

Threaded inserts pressed into the baffle backside accept stainless steel mounting screws. No stripped pilot holes, no MDF damage from drywall screws, no surprises when the next driver upgrade rolls around.

Pre-Wired Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS/carbon fiber composite terminal cup, pre-wired with 12-gauge OFC inside the cabinet, with stainless steel hardware accepting both spade and banana terminations on the input side.

Every panel is cut on ShopSabre CNC routers in our Tullahoma, TN facility. Tolerances that manual fabrication can't hold — joints close cleanly, baffle concentricity stays accurate, and internal volume is consistent unit to unit.

Wiring the XS-W104ES to Your Amplifier

The Sony XS-W104ES is a single 4-ohm voice coil driver — simpler wiring than a dual-coil design, and ideally suited for monoblock subwoofer amplifiers stable at 2 or 4 ohms. The pre-wired terminal cup accepts the XS-W104ES's gold-plated spring terminals via 12-gauge OFC, with stainless hardware on the input side that accepts both spade and banana terminations.

The XS-W104ES is rated for 450 watts RMS. Aim for a clean, well-regulated amplifier delivering 350 to 450 watts at 4 ohms — Sony designed this driver for refined power, not headline numbers. Mobile ES Series amplifiers from Sony's lineup are engineered to pair specifically with this driver, but any quality monoblock with honest 4-ohm output will work.

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF — 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure — because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Internal Bond

200 psi — The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually — the symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE — Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness — resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level — not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge — Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint — where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Named Panel Stock — Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification — it is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.
