INSTALLER'S TAKE

Measure the installed height, not the cabinet height. The box is 7 tall on its own and the feet add 1.75, so plan around 8.75 inches on the 41 by 14 footprint.

Height on this one is set by the motor, not the air. 5.5 inches of mounting depth plus 0.75 of clearance above the motor puts the cabinet at 7 tall, and on 41 by 14 that holds 1.244 net, more than the 1.00 in the standard box. More air, lower Qtc. That is the safe direction.

The extra air helps this driver. At 1.244 net it lands at Qtc 0.785 with F3 38.4 Hz, less punchy than the standard box and closer to flat.

The inserts are in the box, not in the baffle. DD publishes no bolt pattern for the SL712, so set the basket in the recess and press the inserts to its holes. D2 coil: series for 4 ohms is the default answer; parallel gives 1 ohm and that is where amplifiers die.

Measure installed height, not cabinet height: 7 on its own, 8.75 with the 1.75 inch feet on. The standard 30 by 15 is still the pick if you do not have 41 inches of run.

The Down Fire Wide Format

Down Fire Wide is the Performance Optimized answer to a space that is long rather than deep or tall. This cabinet runs 41 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 7 inches tall: 1 inch shallower front to back than our standard 30 by 15 inch Down Fire platform, and 11 inches longer.

Fourteen inches is the practical minimum for a 12 inch driver: a 12 inch frame needs about 13 inches of baffle. The SL712's 12.375 inch frame sits on the 14 inch deep baffle with about 0.81 inch of baffle outside the flange fore and aft. Because the airspace is spread along 41 inches instead of 30, the wide cabinet usually stands lower than the standard box, and it does here: 7 inches against 7.27 inches for the standard 30 by 15 SL712 cabinet.

Height here is set by the driver, not the airspace. The SL712 mounts 5.5 inches deep, and the motor needs 0.75 inch of clear air above it inside the cabinet. That clearance fixes the height at 7 inches, and on a 41 by 14 footprint that height holds 1.244 cubic feet net, more than the 1.00 the standard box was built to. More air lowers Qtc, which is the safe direction.

Which one to choose. The standard 30 by 15 is the pick when length is limited. This one is the pick when height or depth is the limit and you have 41 inches of run: under or behind a rear bench, or along a cargo wall. Measure depth and height first; depth is usually the dimension that decides it.

Performance, Performance Optimized, and Micro

Proline X builds three tiers of Down Fire enclosure. The difference is not finish or materials, it is whether the cabinet was designed for a category or for a driver, and how much of the fitting work is already done for you.

This page is a Performance Optimized enclosure. The cutout, the mounting depth and the chamber volume all come from the DD Audio SL712's own numbers. A Performance box fits your subwoofer. A Performance Optimized box was built for it.

Built Around the DD Audio SL712

The baffle is bored to the SL712's 11.375 inch cutout, and the cabinet height is set by its 5.5 inch mounting depth.

The SL712 is DD's SL700 series 12, a shallow 5.5 inch motor on a 12.375 inch frame rated 1000 watts RMS, with 19 mm of one-way linear travel by DD's own definition against a 40 mm mechanical limit. DD publishes one Thiele-Small block for the driver and applies it to both the D2 and the D4 coil: Fs 29 Hz, Qts 0.54, Qes 0.62, Qms 5.4, Vas 39.2 liters. It publishes no cone area and no sensitivity; the 532.4 square centimeter Sd behind this page is derived from DD's stated 10.25 inch piston diameter.

Net Volume, Not Gross

We build this cabinet at 1.244 cubic feet net from 1.323 gross, after the internal brace and DD Audio's published 0.07 cubic feet of displacement are accounted for.

True net, not marketing net. Internal volume is calculated from the machined cavity dimensions and the driver's displacement, not estimated from external dimensions minus wall thickness.

That produces Qtc 0.785 with Fc at 42.1 Hz and a predicted F3 of 38.4 Hz, computed from DD Audio's single published parameter set, which applies to both the D2 and the D4.

The SL712 carries a moderately high Qts of 0.54 on a low 29 Hz resonance, so the standard box produced a punchy alignment. The wide box holds more air, which pulls Qtc closer to flat while F3 barely moves; the 1.244 net is inside the 0.7 to 1.5 cubic foot sealed range DD Audio publishes for this driver.

These figures are anechoic. Firing down into the floor, the sealed rolloff meets rising cabin gain below about 60 Hz, so in-car response extends below the published F3.

Down Fire Wide Construction

Cut with V-groove and dado joinery on our ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF, a dense 48.5 lb/ft³ board with a 200 psi internal bond and 410,000 psi MOE. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. Corners are square on Down Fire cabinets.

The cabinet measures 41 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 7 inches tall, measured in the down fire position, excluding the feet. The 1.75 inch standoffs ship with the enclosure but are not installed, so the installed height is 8.75 inches. Plan the space around that figure.

1.5 Inch Double Baffle

Two 3/4 inch layers laminated to 1.5 inches, the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer, with a threaded insert kit and stainless machine screws included, not pre-installed, because DD Audio publishes no bolt pattern.

Round Frame, 14 Inch Baffle

The 11.375 inch cutout sits centred on the 14 inch deep baffle, leaving about 0.81 inch of baffle outside the flange fore and aft. No rotation or special layout is needed for a round frame.

Windowed U-Brace

A windowed U-brace dadoed into the shell stiffens the long 41 inch panels without walling off the airspace. Polyfill is installed as a light wall lining.

Side-Mounted Terminal Cup

Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite cup with stainless hardware and copper ring terminals, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Side mounted so it stays accessible with the baffle facing the floor.

Power and Wiring

The SL712 is rated 1000 watts RMS, so target 700 to 1000 watts RMS at the final wired impedance. The D2 coil gives 4 ohms in series or 1 ohm in parallel; the D4 gives 8 ohms in series or 2 ohms in parallel. The 1 ohm load is one many amplifiers are not stable into, so on a D2 series is the safe default unless your amplifier is explicitly rated for it.

DD Audio does not publish a position on down firing this driver, and this cabinet makes no claim on their behalf. The feet ship uninstalled, so front or up firing is an install-time choice.

Bring your own SL712; the driver is purchased separately. The enclosure carries a 1 year limited warranty.

Cut for the Driver, Not the Catalog

We cut every Down Fire Wide cabinet to one driver's published cutout, mounting depth and airspace, then build it one at a time in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Questions on fitment or amplifier matching, call 931-563-5151.

This enclosure holds 1.244 cu ft net . In it the DD Audio SL712 runs a system Qtc of 0.78 with half power at 38.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 19.0 mm travel limit at 908 W, below the driver’s 1000 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1192 W — +284 W, or 31 percent more power for the same 19.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 46.8
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D2 / D4 46.8
D2 / D4 · EBP 46.8
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The SL712 sits at 46.8, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

1.244 cu ft against a 39.2 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.11  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 42 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.78

D2 / D4 · Qtc 0.78, Fc 42 Hz, F3 38.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 29.0 Hz free-air to 42 Hz and half power lands at 38.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. DD Audio publishes one parameter block for the SL712 and applies it to both the D2 and the D4 coil, so one curve describes both. The cone area behind the excursion math is derived from DD’s published 10.25 inch piston diameter; DD publish no Sd, and no sensitivity, so the 1 W figure is computed from the parameters rather than quoted.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 19.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 908 W unfiltered  →  1192 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 16 20 24 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 19.0 mm 908 W reaches Xmax here
D2 / D4 · 908 W, no filterD2 / D4 · 1192 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 19.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 19.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 908 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 1000 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1192 W before hitting the same 19.0 mm. That is 31 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Built From a Spec Sheet, Not a Sales Sheet

Every Proline X Performance Series enclosure is CNC-cut from Langboard Elite MDF, 3/4" (18mm) panels produced to published mill specifications. Most enclosure manufacturers source generic MDF without published data. We can tell you the internal bond rating, the modulus of elasticity, the modulus of rupture, and the face and edge screw holding strength for every panel in this enclosure, because we chose the material based on those numbers, not on price or availability.

Langboard Elite is produced in the United States. The specifications below are pulled directly from Langboard's published mill data and are verifiable. This is the same panel stock used in our full Proline X lineup.

Specifications

Langboard Elite MDF: Published Mill Data

Property Value Why It Matters
Panel Stock Langboard Elite MDF Named, verifiable panel source, not generic "high-density MDF"
Thickness 3/4" (18mm) Industry standard for subwoofer enclosures; panels below this flex under pressure
Density 48.5 lbs/ft³ Higher density = less porosity, better screw retention, reduced resonance
Internal Bond 200 psi Measures resistance to delamination under sustained internal pressure. The most enclosure-relevant spec on this sheet
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 4,200 psi Bending strength before the panel breaks, relevant for larger unsupported baffle spans
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 410,000 psi Stiffness under load; higher MOE means less panel flex under bass pressure, less resonance
Face Screw Holding 325 lbs How firmly the panel surface holds a screw; critical for baffle joint integrity over time
Edge Screw Holding 250 lbs Panel edge retention, relevant for every joint that isn't face-to-face
Internal Bond

200 psi: The Number That Actually Matters for Enclosures

The internal bond rating measures how well the MDF panel resists delamination under sustained pressure applied perpendicular to the face. In a subwoofer enclosure, every bass transient generates a pressure pulse that pushes outward on every panel simultaneously. A panel that begins to delaminate internally loses stiffness gradually. The symptoms are slow: a box that starts to sound softer, less defined, less punchy over months of use. 200 psi internal bond is the spec that determines how long this enclosure holds its acoustic integrity under daily use at real power levels.

Stiffness

410,000 psi MOE: Less Flex, Less Resonance

The modulus of elasticity measures panel stiffness, its resistance to bending under load. A stiffer panel flexes less under the pressure generated by a high-excursion driver at volume. Panel flex is a source of acoustic coloration: the panel itself begins to radiate sound at its own resonant frequency, adding distortion to the output. 410,000 psi stiffness combined with V-groove and dado joinery means the panels stay rigid and the bracing controls resonance at the structure level, not the panel level. The bass you hear comes from the driver, not the box.

Screw Holding

325 lb Face / 250 lb Edge: Joints That Stay Locked

Screw holding strength determines how firmly the panel grips a fastener at the face and at the edge. This matters most at the baffle joint, where the front panel meets the side panels and where the driver is mounted. A panel with low screw holding strength allows fasteners to loosen over time under vibration, leading to air gaps at the joint and loss of acoustic seal. 325 lb face screw holding strength means the baffle hardware stays put. Combined with dado joinery and adhesive, the front panel on a Proline X Performance Series enclosure is not going anywhere.

Sourcing

Named Panel Stock: Not "Premium MDF"

The phrase "premium MDF" or "high-density MDF" appears on marketing copy for enclosures across every price point, from $40 to $400. It is not a specification. It is a description with no defined standard. Langboard Elite is a named, sourced, mill-documented product with published data. We name it in our copy because naming it holds us accountable to the spec. You can look up Langboard Elite independently, verify the numbers on this page, and confirm you are getting what we say you are getting. That is the point.

Why Proline X?

Most enclosures are built to a price point. Proline X is built to a spec. Every box starts with published-data MDF, gets CNC-cut to exact internal volume, and is assembled by hand in our Tennessee facility. The difference shows up in the measurements, and in how the box holds up two years into daily use.

CNC-Cut to Spec
