Image Dynamics IDQ Series Subwoofers
The flagship of the IDQ Series. A 280 ounce motor, 375 watts RMS, 510.72 cm2 of cone area, field-replaceable cone assembly, and the same American-made aluminum flat-wound extended voice coil that defines the IDQ platform. This is the IDQ driver that competes in large vehicle builds and serious sound quality events.
The IDQ12 V.4 uses a 280 ounce Extended Y-35 motor, up from 180 ounces on the IDQ8 and IDQ10. The additional motor mass provides more magnetic flux density in the voice coil gap, stronger motor force relative to the moving mass of the 12 inch cone, and more thermal mass to absorb heat during sustained high-power operation. The result is 375 watts RMS continuous power handling from a driver that also has to control a 510.72 cm2 cone with 14.5mm of one-way Xmax.
The IDQ12 is 20.3 pounds. That weight is the 280 ounce motor. Budget 12 inch drivers weigh 7 to 10 pounds. The mass difference is the difference between a motor that is sized for the cone it drives and one that is not.
D2 impedance warning: The IDQ12 D2 has a DC resistance of 1.4 ohms per coil. Wired in parallel, the combined load is approximately 0.7 ohms, which is below the 1-ohm stable rating of most amplifiers. Wire the D2 in series to present 4 ohms unless your amplifier is explicitly rated for sub-1-ohm loads. The D4 wired in parallel presents 2 ohms, compatible with virtually all Class D monoblocks.
Every IDQ construction feature scales to the 12 inch platform: Parabolic Santoprene surround for long-term compliance retention and linearity at 14.5mm excursion, Poly/Mica cone for stiffness-to-weight ratio and controlled damping, Nomex spider for thermal stability during sustained 375 watt use, Polycarbonate neck joint to isolate voice coil heat from the cone, and the BASV former with 38.3mm of voice coil winding height keeping substantial coil length in the magnetic gap across the full excursion range.
The field-replaceable cone assembly is the same 16-screw design as the IDQ8 and IDQ10. Remove the screws, position the replacement with alignment shims, reinstall. No adhesive, no specialized tools, no professional service. The 280 ounce motor structure that represents the largest portion of the driver's cost and manufacturing complexity stays in service. Only the cone assembly is replaced.
The Image Dynamics ID12 V.4 uses a 127 ounce motor, copper voice coil wire, and a fixed cone assembly. The IDQ12 uses a 280 ounce motor, aluminum flat-wound extended voice coil, and a field-replaceable cone assembly. The IDQ12 handles 375 watts RMS versus 250 watts on the ID12. These are fundamentally different drivers built to different standards for different use cases.
The IDQ12 sealed range runs from 0.65 cubic feet (Compact, 650W max) through 1.8 cubic feet (Audiophile, 375W max). The ported range extends from 1.0 cubic feet at 40 Hz through 2.0 cubic feet at 30 Hz, reaching F3 at 32 Hz in the Audiophile configuration. These are the published specifications for listeners who want the maximum deep bass extension the IDQ12 can produce in a properly built ported enclosure. Port dimensions for each alignment are in the IDQ Series V.4 manual.
Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 5.91 inches, cutout 10.937 inches, outside diameter 12.46 inches, driver displacement 0.10 cubic feet, net weight 20.3 lbs. Confirm mounting location can support the driver weight before installation.
Hand-built in Ontario, California. The Image Dynamics IDQ12 V.4 carries a 1-year limited warranty through authorized dealers. Every unit sold by Audio Intensity is brand new with full warranty coverage.
Audio Intensity ships the Image Dynamics IDQ12 V.4 fast from Tullahoma, Tennessee. This is a serious driver that rewards careful system matching. Tell us your amplifier, your enclosure space, and your application and we will help you build the right system around it.
Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters and their recommended sealed volumes, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff. Volumes are net internal per the IDQ Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.
D2 impedance note: The IDQ12 D2 has a DC resistance of 1.4 ohms per coil. Wired in parallel, the combined load is approximately 0.7 ohms, which is below the 1-ohm stable rating of most Class D amplifiers. Wire the D2 in series (4 ohms) unless your amplifier is rated for sub-1-ohm loads. The D4 wired in parallel presents 2 ohms, which is broadly compatible.

Power handling and ported options: Sealed enclosure power handling decreases as volume increases: 650W at 0.65 cu ft, 550W at 1.0 cu ft, 375W at 1.8 cu ft. The IDQ12 ported alignments extend F3 down to 32 Hz in the Audiophile 2.0 cu ft configuration tuned to 30 Hz. Port dimensions for each alignment are in the IDQ Series V.4 manual. Run your own numbers in the Sealed Box Calculator.
