Most people pick a car subwoofer backward. They choose a size, buy the driver, then find out the box it needs will not fit. Start with the space you actually have, and the rest of the decision falls out of it.

What does a subwoofer actually do in a car?
A subwoofer reproduces the bottom two octaves, roughly 20 Hz to 80 Hz, that your door speakers physically cannot move enough air to produce. That is the whole job. A 6.5 inch midbass driver in a door runs out of cone area and excursion below about 60 Hz, and pushing it lower just adds distortion.
The payoff is not only more bass. Once the sub takes the bottom end, your car speakers stop trying to do a job they are not built for, and midrange clarity improves at the same volume. That is why an SQ car with a well integrated 10 sounds cleaner than the same car with no sub, even at low listening levels.
How much space does the subwoofer really need?
Measure the usable volume in your vehicle before you look at a single driver. Every subwoofer has a published range of net internal volume, and performance falls off fast outside it. Net internal volume means after you subtract the driver's own displacement, the bracing, and the port if there is one.
Here is what that looks like in practice with drivers we stock. The Arc Audio ARC Series 10 wants 0.65 to 0.90 cubic feet sealed, with 0.75 as the recommended target. The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 runs from 0.65 cubic feet up to 1.8. Those two numbers overlap. A 10 and a 12 can want the same box volume, which is exactly why size is the wrong place to start.
Depth catches people out too. The IDMAX12 V.4 needs 8.15 inches of mounting depth, so plan on 8.5 to 9 inches of clearance behind the baffle. The Arc Audio X2V2 12 needs 6.75 inches. The Audiomobile Encore 4412 fits in 4.9 to 5.9 inches because it is a low-profile design. Same nominal size, three very different install requirements.
Should you choose a sealed or ported enclosure?
Run the driver's EBP number and let it decide. EBP equals Fs divided by Qes, both published by the manufacturer. An EBP of 0 to 50 points to sealed, 50 to 100 works either way, and 100 or higher points to ported. It is a starting point rather than a rule, but it is a better starting point than guessing.

One detail worth knowing when you compare quoted volumes: on a sealed build the number is per chamber, because each driver gets its own sealed space. How do you read Xmax, Fs, and Qts on a spec sheet?
Four numbers tell you most of what a driver will do. Xmax is linear one-way excursion, and it is the figure that separates a sub that plays loud from one that just plays. Read the one-way number. Some manufacturers publish peak-to-peak, which is exactly double and looks twice as impressive.
Fs is the driver's free-air resonance. Lower Fs generally means deeper extension. The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 sits at 26 Hz. The Arc Audio ARC Series 10 D2 sits at 23.8 Hz. The Image Dynamics IDQ10 V.4 sits at 42 Hz, which tells you it is built for impact rather than for the bottom octave.
Qts describes how damped the driver is. Low Qts drivers want more air and produce flatter response. High Qts drivers work in small boxes and lift the midbass. The ARC Series 10 D2 at Qts 0.390 produces a near-Butterworth sealed alignment. The IDQ10 V.4 D2 at Qts 0.797 runs a much higher Qtc and sounds punchier as a result. Neither is better. They are built for different jobs.

The accuracy pick and the output pick
If you want flat sealed response in a moderate box, the Arc Audio ARC Series 10 is the one. Qts 0.390 on the D2 gives Qtc between 0.652 and 0.728 across its whole recommended volume range, which is about as close to textbook as a car install gets. If you want maximum extension and excursion, the Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 gives you a 400 ounce motor, 19mm one-way Xmax, 547.39 square centimeters of cone area, and a field-replaceable cone assembly held by 16 screws.
When depth is the constraint
Trucks and tight cargo areas change the math. The Audiomobile Encore 4412 puts 1000 watts RMS and 19mm of one-way Xmax into a 4.9 to 5.9 inch mounting depth, which is why it ends up in behind-seat builds where an IDMAX12 will not physically fit. How much amplifier power do you need?
Match the amplifier's RMS output, at the impedance your wiring actually presents, to the subwoofer's RMS rating. That last part is where most systems go wrong. A dual 2-ohm driver wired in parallel presents 1 ohm, not 2, and plenty of amplifiers are not rated to run there.
The wiring math is short. Two 2-ohm coils in parallel give 1 ohm. Two 4-ohm coils in parallel give 2 ohms. Two 2-ohm coils in series give 4 ohms. Check the DC resistance too, because real coils rarely sit exactly on their nominal value. The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 D2 measures 1.80 ohms per coil, so wiring it parallel lands near 0.9 ohms.
Underpowering damages more subwoofers than overpowering does. An amplifier that cannot cleanly deliver rated power will clip, and a clipped signal puts sustained heat into the voice coil. Does the enclosure itself change what you hear?
Yes, and more than most people expect. Any energy that flexes a panel is energy that did not reach the cabin. Thin material and loose joints cost output and add resonance that shows up as a smeared, one-note bottom end.
