Arc Audio SW Series Subwoofers
A genuinely new shallow-mount engineering approach from Arc Audio. The SW10 puts the N42UH neodymium motor on the outside of the enclosure, uses a CNC-machined vented iron motor cap optimized for front-loaded cavity behavior, and delivers 14.7mm of one-way linear Xmax from 2.4 inches of mounting depth. Built for the installations where Arc Audio's ARC and A-Series depth requirements are too much.
Standard subwoofer motors sit behind the cone, which means the motor is inside the enclosure when the driver is installed. In a sealed enclosure the motor is surrounded by compressed air and trapped heat with no airflow. Thermal management then depends entirely on the basket geometry and whatever conduction path the frame provides to the external mounting surface.
The SW10 reverses this. The N42UH neodymium motor is positioned at the front of the driver, outside the enclosure once the subwoofer is installed. The motor sits in free air, exposed directly to ambient air circulation rather than confined inside a sealed cavity. Arc Audio designed the CNC-machined vented iron motor cap specifically to work in this front-loaded configuration, managing the acoustic relationship between the motor structure and the loading surface directly in front of it. This is not a minor construction variation: it is a different thermal and acoustic architecture from the ground up.
N42UH is a specific grade of neodymium magnet material, where N42 denotes magnetic energy density (approximately 42 MGOe) and UH denotes ultra-high temperature resistance. Standard neodymium magnets lose flux density at elevated temperatures: this is called thermal demagnetization and it is why cheap neodymium motor designs fail under sustained high-power use. N42UH material maintains its magnetic properties at temperatures up to approximately 180 degrees Celsius, substantially higher than standard or even high-temperature grades. This is the material grade choice that allows the SW10's compact motor structure to sustain real-world power handling without progressive performance degradation.
The SW10 uses a raised-cup cone profile constructed from reinforced cellulose fiber with a composite hydrophobic coating. The raised-cup geometry, where the cone's apex is elevated forward rather than sitting at the plane of the basket, is an excursion management approach that allows the voice coil to travel further while maintaining mechanical stability. The cellulose fiber base provides natural acoustic damping combined with the hydrophobic coating to resist moisture in automotive environments. The low-shore butyl rubber surround has high compliance and long-term durability advantages over foam surrounds, which degrade under UV and temperature cycling.
The 2.5 inch aluminum voice coil former is wound with high-temperature wire and processed through a stage-baked tempering cycle before assembly. Stage-baking drives off residual moisture, drives adhesives to full cure strength, and pre-stresses the voice coil assembly to improve thermal stability under sustained power. Arc Audio specifies this process specifically to address the failure mode where adhesives in the voice coil assembly soften and migrate under high power, causing imbalance and ultimately voice coil failure. The aluminum former conducts heat away from the winding and toward the ventilated motor structure more efficiently than Nomex or Kapton formers of equivalent wall thickness.
The SW10 uses high-tension spring-loaded push terminals rather than threaded set screws. Arc Audio's stated rationale is installation reliability in compact enclosures where a tool cannot always reach the terminal: push-in connections with high retention force provide consistent contact without requiring a hex key or terminal wrench. In down-fire and front-fire installations where the motor faces the baffle, tool access to rear terminals is often restricted.
The Arc Audio A10 is a standard shallow-mount driver at 3.85 inches of mounting depth. The Arc Audio ARC 10 is a standard-depth sound quality driver. The SW10 is the first Arc Audio subwoofer at sub-3-inch mounting depth, with a front-motor architecture that does not appear on any previous Arc Audio subwoofer design. Choose the SW10 when the available depth is under 3 inches and sound quality matters. Choose the A10 when the installation allows 3.85 inches and the price delta matters. Choose the ARC 10 when depth is not a constraint and maximum sound quality is the priority.
Fitment note: The SW10 is optimized for front-loaded enclosure applications: under-seat truck enclosures, seat-back loaded systems, stealth installations, and close-coupled down-fire designs where the motor faces the loading surface. The external motor position is part of this design intent. At 2.4 inches of mounting depth, the SW10 fits installations that no other Arc Audio driver accommodates. Full cutout diameter, overall diameter, and physical dimensions are pending Arc Audio's official spec sheet release.
