A car subwoofer exists to reproduce the 20 to 80 Hz band that door speakers physically cannot. Choosing one well comes down to four decisions in order: how much space you have, what enclosure alignment suits the driver, how much power at what impedance, and how the signal gets from your head unit to the amplifier. Get those four right and the brand on the cone matters far less than most buyers assume.

What does a subwoofer actually do that your door speakers can't?
It reproduces the bottom two octaves. A 6.5 inch midbass driver mounted in a factory door has perhaps 6 to 8 mm of usable excursion and is loading into a plastic door card full of holes. Output starts falling off around 80 Hz and by 50 Hz there is very little left. The content is not quiet down there, it is absent.
This is why the 80 Hz crossover point became a convention in the first place. As SVS Sound puts it, the most common recommended crossover frequency, and the THX standard, is 80 Hz. The reasoning carries straight over to a car: most small drivers give up right about there, and a dedicated low frequency driver takes over cleanly (SVS Sound).
The part people underestimate is what a subwoofer does for the rest of the system. Once bass is handled elsewhere, you can high-pass the door speakers at 80 Hz and stop asking them to attempt frequencies they were never going to produce. Those drivers stop wasting excursion on content they cannot reproduce, which lowers distortion in the midrange. In our shop the most common reaction after a subwoofer install is not "the bass is better." It is that vocals got clearer. That is the high-pass filter, not the subwoofer.

Do you actually need one?
If the only bass sources in your car are the factory door speakers, then yes. If you have already replaced the door speakers with a good component set and you listen mostly to acoustic material at moderate volume, the answer gets closer. Here is the honest version.
You want a subwoofer if any of these are true. You listen to anything with synthesized low end, hip hop, electronic, or modern pop production. You notice the bass line disappearing when you turn the volume down. You have already upgraded speakers and something still sounds thin. You are running a factory system in a truck, where the door speaker situation is usually worse than in a sedan.
You can skip it if you genuinely listen at low volume to sparse acoustic recordings and the factory system already satisfies you. That is a real listener profile and there is nothing wrong with it. But it is rarer than the people who tell themselves they fit it.
One thing worth saying plainly: a subwoofer is not a volume knob for bass. Installed and tuned correctly it should be nearly invisible on most tracks and only announce itself when the recording actually contains low content. If you can localize the subwoofer as a separate sound source behind you, something is wrong with the crossover, the phase, or the level, not with the driver.
Component, powered, or loaded enclosure: which one fits your install?
Three formats, and the right one depends far more on your install constraints than on sound quality. Powered units are not automatically worse, they are just less flexible.

The loaded enclosure is the format we sell the most of, and the reason is not margin. It is that box volume is where most self-installed systems go wrong, and a loaded enclosure removes that variable entirely. Every Proline X enclosure is cut from 3/4" Langboard Elite MDF on ShopSabre routers to a 0.005" tolerance, with the internal volume set to the specific driver's published parameters rather than to a round number that fit the sheet.
What size subwoofer should you run?
Wrong question, and it is the single most expensive mistake in car audio. Diameter tells you almost nothing about output. What produces low frequency output is displaced air volume, which is cone area multiplied by excursion. A driver with twice the excursion and 70% of the cone area moves more air than the bigger one.
Concrete example. The Image Dynamics IDMAX 10 has 39 mm of peak to peak excursion, which is 19.5 mm in one direction. Plenty of 12 inch drivers in the same price bracket offer 9 to 12 mm one-way. The 10 has roughly 64% of the cone area of the 12 and close to double the stroke. In a properly sized sealed box it will out-move the 12 and it will do it in about half the enclosure volume.
So the order of operations is: measure the space you actually have, decide how much of it you are willing to give up, and then choose a driver whose parameters suit that volume. Not the reverse. A 12 shoehorned into 0.6 cubic feet because that is what fit behind the seat will sound worse than a 10 that had its correct 0.8 cubic feet.
Where diameter does matter is mounting depth and cutout. Shallow-mount drivers exist specifically for behind-seat and under-seat applications where you have surface area but no depth. How much power does a subwoofer need, and at what impedance?
More than your head unit has. A typical factory or aftermarket head unit produces somewhere around 15 to 22 watts RMS per channel into 4 ohms. A subwoofer wants hundreds. This is why a dedicated amplifier is not optional unless the amp is already built into a powered unit.
Match the amplifier's RMS rating to the driver's RMS rating at the impedance you will actually wire, and then read that last clause again, because it is where people get caught. A mono amplifier advertised at 1000 watts is almost always quoting 1 ohm. Wire it into 4 ohms and you may see closer to 300.

Dual voice coil drivers give you more wiring options from the same pair of subs, which is why they dominate the category. The video below walks the 2 ohm dual voice coil case specifically, showing how the same driver lands on either 1 ohm or 4 ohms depending only on how you land the leads.
One more electrical point that gets skipped. Adding 500 or more watts of amplification puts real load on a charging system that was specified for a factory stereo. If your headlights dim on bass hits, that is not a subwoofer problem, that is a current delivery problem, and the fix is upgraded wiring and possibly the battery rather than a different sub.
Sealed or ported: how does the box change the sound?
The enclosure is not packaging. It is an acoustic component that determines the low frequency response as much as the driver does. And the driver itself tells you which type it wants, through a number called EBP.
EBP is efficiency bandwidth product, and it is simply the driver's resonant frequency divided by its electrical Q: EBP = Fs ÷ Qes. Both figures are on any legitimate manufacturer spec sheet. In a car the choice is complicated by cabin gain, which is the natural low frequency reinforcement a small sealed space provides. Cabin gain rises as frequency drops, which is why a sealed alignment that would sound thin in a living room often measures close to flat in a vehicle. It is also why the ported box that impressed you in someone's demo van may be too much in your sedan. Material matters more than most buyers think. We build on 3/4" Langboard Elite MDF at 48.5 lbs/ft³ with a 200 psi internal bond, and the internal bond figure is the one that counts. It measures how well the panel resists delaminating under pressure, and a subwoofer enclosure is a pressure vessel. Performance and Loaded Series boxes use V-groove and dado joinery, sealed variants ship with polyfill already installed, and every enclosure carries a 2 year warranty.
How do you install a subwoofer in a car?
Seven steps, in this order. Skipping the order is what causes most of the problems we get asked to fix.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Not optional. You are about to run a live cable the length of the car.
- Run the power cable from the battery, with a fuse within 18 inches of the positive terminal. That fuse protects the cable, not the amplifier. As Car Audio Help puts it, the only function of the main power fuse is to protect the main power wire, which in turn protects the vehicle. Eighteen inches is the working convention and shorter is better (BestCarAudio.com). - Run signal and remote turn-on down the opposite side of the vehicle from the power cable. Running RCAs alongside a power cable is the most common source of alternator whine.
- Establish a ground. Short as practical, to bare chassis metal, paint sanded off, star washer under the ring terminal. A bad ground causes more noise complaints than any other single install error.
- Get signal to the amplifier. Aftermarket head unit means RCA preouts. Factory head unit means a line output converter, or an amplifier with speaker-level inputs. Tap a full-range source if the factory system applies its own EQ curve.
- Mount and secure the enclosure. An unsecured box is a projectile in a collision, and it will also rattle. Strap it or bracket it.
- Set gain last, with a test tone and the head unit at about 75% volume. Gain is an input sensitivity control, not a volume knob. Turn it up until you hear distortion, then back it down.
On step 7, the reason gain gets set last is that everything upstream affects it. Set gain, then change the head unit, and you have to set it again. This step is also where a DSP earns its keep, because it lets you set crossover slope, phase, and time alignment properly instead of relying on the amplifier's basic filter. What goes wrong in the first month
Four failure modes account for most of what comes back through the shop door, and none of them are manufacturing defects.
Gain set by ear at full volume. The amplifier clips, the clipped signal heats the voice coil, and the coil eventually fails. Thermal failure from clipping is far more common than mechanical failure from over-excursion. If a subwoofer smells hot, that is a gain problem.
Bass boost left engaged. Most amplifiers have a bass boost circuit centered around 45 Hz. Combined with cabin gain, it produces a large peak exactly where the driver is already working hardest. Leave it at zero unless you have measured a reason not to.
No subsonic filter on a ported box. Below the port tuning frequency the enclosure stops loading the cone and excursion climbs sharply on content the driver cannot use. A subsonic filter set roughly 5 Hz below tuning prevents that. Sealed boxes are more forgiving here, which is part of why we recommend them for first builds.
Rattles blamed on the subwoofer. A new subwoofer will find every loose trim panel, license plate, and unsecured object in the vehicle. That buzz is almost never the driver. Sound deadening on the trunk lid and rear deck usually solves more than swapping equipment does.
Judging a brand by its spec sheet
We are not going to rank brands here. Rankings age badly and they depend heavily on what you are trying to do. What holds up is knowing how to read what a manufacturer publishes, because that tells you more about a company than any list does.
Look for these four things. First, full T/S parameters: Fs, Qts, Qes, Qms, Vas, Xmax, Sd, and Re. A manufacturer that will not publish Vas and Qts is a manufacturer whose driver you cannot design an enclosure for. Second, excursion stated one-way, or clearly labeled as peak to peak. Quoting 39 mm without saying it is peak to peak makes a driver look twice as capable as it is. Third, RMS power at a stated impedance, not a peak or "max" figure. Fourth, recommended enclosure volumes for both alignments.
One spec-table detail worth knowing because it catches people ordering enclosures: bolt circle diameter is always larger than cutout diameter. If a listing shows them the other way round, the listing is wrong, and you should verify before you cut anything.
