INSTALLER'S TAKE

The ID10 V.4 is the right call when you have 0.40 to 0.80 cubic feet of sealed enclosure space and want more than an 8 inch driver can provide. The 2.0 inch BASV former and the 127 ounce motor are what separate this from a budget 10: the thermal headroom is real, and Image Dynamics' 250 watt RMS rating reflects that.

The sealed alignments run high Qtc across all three volumes, which is the ID Series character. Punchy, impactful bass with a midbass lift. At the Universal 0.60 cubic foot alignment the D2 lands around Qtc 1.13, which is a prominent midbass character that works well in most daily listening systems and fills a cabin without needing a large box. The D4 at the same volume runs Qtc 1.31, noticeably fuller. If your amp prefers 2 ohms and that is why you are considering the D4, understand you are also getting a different sonic character, not just a different impedance.

For people who want to go ported, the ID10 earns it. F3 in the upper 20s from a 10 inch driver in 1.37 to 1.62 cubic feet is the kind of number you see in drivers that cost three times as much. Image Dynamics publishes the port dimensions by alignment in the manual, so there is no guesswork. Ported requires more box and lower power handling, but the output capability is genuinely impressive.

Image Dynamics ID Series Subwoofers

Image Dynamics ID10 V.4 10 Inch Subwoofer

More cone area, more output. The ID10 V.4 brings the full ID Series construction to a 10 inch platform: 250 watts RMS, 13.95mm Xmax, Parabolic Santoprene surround, BASV former, and sealed volumes down to 0.40 cubic feet for installations where a 12 inch box will not fit.

250W RMS 500W Peak Hand-Built in the USA Dual 2 or Dual 4 Ohm

The Step Up from the ID8

The Image Dynamics ID10 V.4 scales the ID Series platform to a 10 inch driver: 250 watts RMS versus 150 watts on the ID8, 363 cm2 of cone area versus 240.6 cm2, and a 2.0 inch voice coil on a 127 ounce motor versus the ID8's 1.5 inch coil on a 90 ounce motor. Every material and construction choice carries over: Parabolic Santoprene surround, Poly/Mica cone, Hybrid Progressive Nomex spider, Polycarbonate neck joint, BASV voice coil former.

The enclosure requirement steps up proportionally. The ID10 sealed range starts at 0.40 cubic feet and tops out at 0.80 cubic feet. If your installation can accommodate that minimum volume, the ID10 gives you meaningfully more output and deeper extension than the ID8, with ported alignments extending F3 down to 26 Hz at the largest recommended volume.

ID Series Construction at 10 Inches

The Parabolic Santoprene surround on the ID10 serves the same purpose as on the ID8: UV resistance, temperature stability, and long-term compliance retention in automotive environments. The parabolic profile allows the 10 inch cone to maintain linearity at the higher excursion levels a 250 watt driver produces. At 13.95mm of one-way Xmax, the ID10 has real excursion reserve for both sealed and ported applications.

The 2.0 inch voice coil with BASV former is the thermal management upgrade from the ID8's 1.5 inch coil. More copper wire in the gap, more surface area for heat dissipation, better sustained power handling. Image Dynamics rates the ID10 at 250 watts RMS continuous and means it in the same way they mean the ID8's 150 watt figure: engineered to that number, not inflated to it.

The Extended Y-35 motor at 127 ounces provides strong motor force relative to the 10 inch cone, which contributes to the punchy, impactful sealed alignment that ID Series drivers are known for. The enclosure performance section below shows the Qtc and F3 data for both D2 and D4 variants across all three recommended sealed volumes.

Ported Potential

Image Dynamics recommends sealed for optimal sound quality but publishes full ported specifications for the ID10. The ported range runs from 1.14 cubic feet tuned to 32 Hz (Compact, F3 29 Hz) through 1.62 cubic feet tuned to 28 Hz (Audiophile, F3 26 Hz). Those F3 numbers are exceptional for a 10 inch driver and the reason the ID Series has been used in both daily listening builds and sound quality competition for over thirty years. Port dimensions for each alignment are in the ID Series V.4 owner's manual.

Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 5.12 inches, cutout 9.125 inches, outside diameter 10.125 inches, driver displacement 0.0832 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures are net internal volumes per Image Dynamics specifications. Ported enclosure volumes include port volume per the manual.

D2 or D4

The D2 wires to 1 ohm or 4 ohms; the D4 wires to 2 ohms or 8 ohms. Unlike the ID8, where the D2 and D4 have markedly different Vas values, the ID10 D2 and D4 are closer in character (Vas 31.56 L vs 37.31 L), though the D4 still runs higher Qtc at the same sealed volume. Pick the coil that suits your amplifier's preferred impedance. The enclosure performance section below shows both variants.

Sealed Enclosure Performance: Pre-Calculated Results

Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff for each sealed volume. Volumes are net internal (including driver displacement), per the ID Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.

The ID10 is a high-Qts driver. Qtc values above 1.0 across the recommended sealed range are by design, producing punchy, impactful bass with a midbass lift. The F3 values in the low-to-mid 40s are strong performance from a 10 inch driver in compact sealed enclosures. The D4 runs higher Qtc than D2 at the same volume due to its larger Vas, producing a fuller, more prominent midbass character.

Power handling and ported options: As with all ID Series drivers, sealed enclosure power handling decreases as volume increases: 450W at 0.40 cu ft, 350W at 0.60 cu ft, 250W at 0.80 cu ft. For ported applications, the ID10 extends F3 down to 26 Hz in the Audiophile 1.62 cu ft alignment tuned to 28 Hz. Ported power handling follows the same de-rating. Match your amplifier to the enclosure you plan to build. Run your own numbers in the Sealed Box Calculator.
