What You Are Buying

A two-way 5.25 inch coaxial pair from the 1000 Series, which is the tier below the 2000 Series wool pulp drivers. Coated paper cone, rubber surround, dampened steel frame, tweeter at the centre.

What makes this listing unusual is that Audio Dynamics published a complete Thiele-Small set for a door coaxial, which almost nobody does. That is worth something, and it is in the Specifications tab.

Read the power rating before you set your gains

The 80W RMS figure is conditional. It is rated with an electronic high-pass filter in circuit at 80Hz at 24dB/octave, 100Hz at 18dB/octave, or 120Hz at 12dB/octave. The passive crossover inside the speaker protects the tweeter only. The woofer still needs the channel high-passed.

The T/S Set, and What It Tells You

We ran the published numbers against each other before printing them. Fs derived from Cms and Mms comes out at 105.5Hz, which matches the published Fs. Qes derived from Fs, Mms, Re and Bl comes out at 1.518 against a published 1.517. Qts from Qes and Qms comes out at 1.202, matching. The set is internally consistent, which is more than can be said for a lot of published parameters.

Qts 1.202

Very high, and correct for what this is. A high-Qts driver is a driver with a weak motor relative to its moving mass, and in a door, on effectively infinite baffle, that is what you want. It gives you a gentle rolloff into the midbass instead of a sharp knee. It also means this driver has no business in a box.

Fs 105.5Hz, Vas 2.567 litres

The resonance is high and the equivalent volume is tiny, both normal for a 5.25 inch driver with a stiff suspension. Practically: nothing useful happens below about 100Hz, which is exactly why the recommended high-pass points start at 80Hz.

84.97dB sensitivity

Modest. These want an amplifier. 20 to 80W RMS per channel is the workable band and the upper half of it is where they come alive.

Bl 3.333 Tm, Re 3.245 Ohm

A small motor and a low DC resistance, which is where the high Qts comes from. Note the 3.245 Ohm Re on a nominal 4 Ohm driver. That is normal, but if you are running two pairs off one channel, do the arithmetic on the real number, not the nominal one.

Fitment

  • 112mm / 4 7/16 inch mounting hole. Check this against your cutout.
  • 133mm / 5 1/4 inch frame diameter.
  • 55mm / 2 3/16 inch mounting depth. Shallow enough for most factory doors and rear decks.
  • 81mm motor diameter is what sets the depth behind the baffle.
  • 9mm tweeter protrusion. Check grille clearance.
  • 4 Ohm nominal.

Pick the steepest slope you have

80Hz at 24dB/octave protects the driver as well as 120Hz at 12dB/octave and gives you 40Hz more usable midbass. If your amplifier or DSP will do 24dB/octave, use it.

Who This Suits

Buy these if

  • Your car takes 5.25 inch and you have an amplifier and a high-pass filter.
  • You want a paper cone rather than a synthetic one.
  • You are replacing tired factory speakers and want a drop-in.
  • You accept a final sale on closeout stock.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are on head unit power. 84.97dB is not enough to carry it.
  • You cannot high-pass the channel.
  • You want to put these in a box. Qts 1.202 says no.
  • You want a separate tweeter at ear height.

Installation

  • Set the high-pass first, then set the gain.
  • Test-fit dry with the window up and down before wiring.
  • Wire straight from the amplifier. No external crossover needed.
  • Seal the inner door skin. On a driver with this little cone area, a leaky door is the whole difference in midbass.

Condition and sale terms

Closeout stock, sold as a final sale with no returns and no exchanges. Packaging may show shelf wear from storage. Specifications and Thiele-Small parameters are as published by Audio Dynamics; we checked them for internal consistency and did not alter them. Once remaining stock is gone this listing will be removed.

The 80W RMS rating is measured with an electronic high-pass filter in circuit at 80Hz / 24dB per octave, 100Hz / 18dB per octave, or 120Hz / 12dB per octave. Thiele-Small parameters are as published by Audio Dynamics; we verified them for internal consistency and did not alter them.
