Q: What size enclosure does the Alpine R2-W12D2 need?

Alpine gives a sealed range of 0.55 to 1.0 cubic feet net, with 0.75 cubic feet recommended for Qtc 0.65 and an F3 of 43 Hz. Vented, the range is 1.0 to 1.5 cubic feet tuned 33 to 37 Hz, and Alpine's recommended 1.45 cubic foot box tuned to 36 Hz reaches an F3 of 29 Hz.

Q: Sealed or ported for the R2-W12D2?

Both work. Its Qts of 0.41 suits a ported box, which gives more output and deeper extension, while a sealed box is smaller and tighter. Choose ported if you have the space and want the low end, sealed if space is limited or you want the most accurate bass.

Q: How much power does the R2-W12D2 handle?

Alpine rates it at 750 watts RMS and 2250 watts peak, to the CTA-2031 standard, with a recommended amplifier range of 300 to 750 watts RMS.

Q: How do I wire the dual 2 ohm voice coils?

Use the two jumper wires in the box. Coils in parallel give a 1 ohm load and in series give 4 ohms. For two woofers, wire each in series to 4 ohms and parallel the pair for 2 ohms. Confirm your amplifier is stable at the load you choose.

Q: What are the mounting depth and cutout?

Mounting depth is 6-1/2 inches and the cutout is 10-7/8 inches. Alpine's product page lists the metric equivalents as 152 mm and 231 mm, but those do not match the inch figures; 6-1/2 inches is about 165 mm and 10-7/8 inches about 276 mm.

Q: Does Audio Intensity build an enclosure for the R2-W12D2?

Yes. We cut a sealed 12 inch wedge at 0.75 cubic feet net, a sealed dual 12 inch wedge for a pair, and a ported 12 inch wedge at 1.56 cubic feet tuned to 35.5 Hz. All three are built in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Q: What is the difference between the R2-W12D2 and the R2-W12D4?

Only the voice coils. The D2 has dual 2 ohm coils (1 or 4 ohm loads) and the D4 has dual 4 ohm coils (2 or 8 ohm loads). The D2's Qts is slightly lower, 0.41 against 0.51. Power, cutout and depth are the same. We currently stock the D2.

Q: Is a grille included?

No. A cosmetic trim ring comes in the box, and the woofer accepts Alpine's optional KTE-12G grille on its twist-lock mount, sold separately.

INSTALLER'S TAKE

The R2-W12D2 is a lot of motor for the money. 750 watts, 20 mm of Xmax and a Qts of 0.41 mean it does not care much whether you build sealed or ported, which is rare, and the 144 ounce double-stacked magnet keeps it controlled at volume.

Sealed at 0.75 cubic feet it is tight and punchy. If you have the trunk space, port it: tuned in the mid 30s it digs to about 29 Hz. It needs 6-1/2 inches of depth, so for truck cabs and thin floor boxes look at the RS-W12D2 instead.

Alpine R2-W12D2 12 Inch Subwoofer

750 watts RMS and 20 mm of Xmax from Alpine's second-generation R-Series 12. Larger double-stacked magnets, 144 ounces of them, give the R2-W12D2 more motor force than the previous R-Series, and its low Qts makes it equally at home sealed or ported. Dual 2 ohm coils with configuration jumpers.

A Bigger Motor for the R-Series

The 2nd-gen R2 uses larger, double-stacked magnets for more motor force, with an integrated Faraday ring to cut distortion. The cone is Kevlar-reinforced pulp, the dust cap is a polypropylene and ceramic composite that is stiff but well damped, and Alpine's High Amplitude Multi-Roll (HAMR) rubber surround allows 20 mm of linear excursion and 72 mm of total mechanical travel while staying cool. It carries a 65.5 mm (2.6 inch) voice coil and push-type terminals that take up to 8 AWG wire.

A cosmetic trim ring comes in the box, and Alpine's EZ-Change twist-lock mount takes the optional KTE-12G grille without screws.

Wiring the Dual 2 Ohm Coils

One woofer: coils in parallel give a 1 ohm load, coils in series give 4 ohms. Alpine includes two jumper wires for either setup.

Two woofers: wire each in series to 4 ohms and parallel the pair for a 2 ohm load.

Alpine rates the R2-W12D2 at 750 watts RMS and 2250 watts peak, with a recommended amplifier range of 300 to 750 watts RMS.
