How to read a power rating, match an amplifier to a driver, and tell a thermal limit from a mechanical one.

RMS Is the Only Number That Means Anything

RMS is continuous power: what the driver dissipates all day without the voice coil cooking. Peak and max are marketing figures. On most consumer subwoofers the peak number is roughly twice RMS, and on the worst offenders it is four times. If a listing leads with a big number and buries the small one, the big one is peak.

Match amplifiers to RMS, at the impedance the driver actually presents once it is wired. Nothing else in the spec sheet changes how much power the coil can take.

Matching the Amplifier to the Driver

Aim for amplifier RMS in the range of 75 to 125 percent of the driver's RMS rating at the final wired impedance. Underpowering is not the safe choice people assume: a small amplifier driven into clipping sends a distorted waveform with far more average energy than its rating suggests, and that is what burns coils.

Set gain with a meter, not by ear

Gain is an input sensitivity control, not a volume knob. Set it against the head unit's actual output using an oscilloscope or a DMM and a test tone. Turning it up until it sounds loud is how most burnt drivers happen.

Thermal Limits and Mechanical Limits Are Different

Power handling describes a thermal ceiling. Excursion describes a mechanical one. A driver can sit inside its RMS rating and still bottom out if the enclosure is too large or the signal runs below the box tuning with no high-pass in the way.

This is why enclosure volume belongs in a power conversation. A sealed cabinet raises system Q and restrains cone motion. A ported cabinet unloads sharply below tuning, so a subsonic filter is not optional on a ported build.
