Qes is the electrical Q factor of a subwoofer — one of the core Thiele-Small parameters that describes how a driver's own motor (its magnet and voice coil) controls cone movement at the driver's resonant frequency (Fs). It is a dimensionless number: a lower Qes means a stronger motor with tighter electrical damping, while a higher Qes means a weaker motor and looser control over the cone.

In one line: Qes measures how much the motor's electrical side damps the cone at resonance. Lower Qes = stronger, more controlled motor.

Why Qes matters

Qes rarely gets used on its own — its value is in what it feeds. It combines with the mechanical Q factor (Qms) to produce the total Q of the driver (Qts), the single number most often used to judge how a subwoofer behaves. Qes is also half of the EBP (Efficiency Bandwidth Product) calculation, which divides Fs by Qes to indicate whether a driver suits a sealed or ported enclosure.
