INSTALLER'S TAKE

The IDMAX15 is 43 pounds. You need two people for installation and a baffle structure engineered to hold the weight. The 10.43 inch mounting depth means the enclosure design has to account for rear clearance behind the baffle, and with 0.26 cubic feet of displacement you are subtracting meaningfully from your gross internal volume. Do the math before cutting wood.

The D2 at 0.7 ohms parallel is a hard no for most amplifiers. Wire series for 4 ohms or use the D4. If you specifically need 1 ohm because your amplifier only makes rated power there, verify the minimum impedance in the specification sheet, not the marketing materials. The D4 at 2 ohms gives you access to 1-ohm stable mono amps at full output without the impedance risk.

The sealed alignments run very high Qtc because the Qts on this driver is just under 1.0 for the D2. That produces strong midbass lift and impact. In a large vehicle cabin this character translates to presence and authority, not boominess, because the room absorbs the midbass lift and what you hear is output. In a small car this driver has no business. In a full-size SUV, a crew cab, a van, or a dedicated audio build, this is the driver that fills the space. The ported Audiophile alignment at 4.0 cubic feet tuned to 27 Hz reaching F3 at 27 Hz is the configuration that earns points at competition.

Image Dynamics IDMAX Series Subwoofers

Image Dynamics IDMAX15 V.4 15 Inch Subwoofer

The largest driver in the Image Dynamics lineup. A 575 ounce motor, 600 watts RMS, 22mm Xmax, 934.82 cm2 of cone area, 2.5 inch voice coil, and field-replaceable cone assembly. Weighing 43 pounds, this is the IDMAX platform at maximum scale, built for large vehicle builds, high-output competition systems, and installations where no other driver will do.

600W RMS 1200W Peak 575 oz Motor 22mm Xmax

575 Ounce Motor and 22mm Xmax

The IDMAX15 steps up from the IDMAX10/12's 400 ounce motor to 575 ounces, and from 19mm to 22mm of one-way Xmax. The voice coil grows to 2.5 inches with 60mm of winding height, providing even more conductor length in the magnetic gap at full excursion. The 934.82 cm2 cone area is more than double the IDMAX10 and over 70 percent more than the IDMAX12. At the same excursion, the IDMAX15 moves significantly more air than either of them.

The power rating increases to 600 watts RMS and 1200 watts peak. The enclosure power handling at the Compact 1.5 cubic foot alignment reaches 1000 watts maximum. These figures reflect what the 575 ounce motor, Aluminum neck joint, and 60mm BASV former can sustain continuously at the rated power level.

D2 impedance warning: The IDMAX15 D2 has Re of 1.4 ohms per coil. Wired in parallel, the combined load is approximately 0.7 ohms, below the 1-ohm stable rating of most amplifiers. Wire the D2 in series for 4 ohms unless your amplifier is explicitly rated for sub-1-ohm operation. The D4 wired in parallel presents 2 ohms, compatible with all 1-ohm stable Class D monoblocks.

Built for Output, Not Flatness

The IDMAX15 has a Qts of 0.952 (D2) and 1.022 (D4), which produces elevated Qtc values in sealed enclosures and a strong midbass lift. This is by design. A 15 inch driver with 934.82 cm2 of cone area and 22mm of Xmax in a large vehicle cabin produces the kind of deep, physical bass presence that fills the space. The sealed alignments do not approach Butterworth; they are tuned for impact and output at scale. For listeners who want flat accuracy at 15 inches, the IDMAX12 D2 in a large sealed box delivers a more controlled alignment. For maximum output and authority in the largest vehicles, the IDMAX15 is the driver.

IDMAX15 vs IDMAX12: Scale and Purpose

The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 and the IDMAX15 share the field-replaceable cone assembly, Glass Fiber/Pulp cone, Aluminum neck joint, and Parabolic Santoprene surround. The IDMAX15 steps up to a 575 ounce motor from 400 ounces, a 2.5 inch voice coil from 2.0 inches, 22mm Xmax from 19mm, 600 watts RMS from 500 watts, and requires a minimum sealed enclosure of 1.5 cubic feet versus 0.65 cubic feet. The IDMAX15 is for large vehicle builds where the IDMAX12 runs out of cone area and output before filling the cabin. In a standard trunk build, the IDMAX12 is the right choice. In a Suburban, Expedition, Sprinter, or dedicated audio build, the IDMAX15 is what the space calls for.

Field-Replaceable Cone Assembly

The IDMAX15 uses the same 16-screw field-replaceable cone assembly as the IDMAX10 and IDMAX12. Remove the screws, position the replacement assembly with alignment shims, reinstall. No adhesive, no curing time, no professional service required. On a 43 pound driver used at high power in competition or daily high-output use, field serviceability is not a luxury, it is a practical necessity.

Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 10.43 inches, cutout 14.75 inches, outside diameter 16.22 inches, driver displacement 0.26 cubic feet, net weight 43 lbs. This driver requires a heavy-duty baffle and enclosure structure capable of supporting its weight. Plan at least 11 inches of rear clearance. Two people for installation is strongly recommended.

Sealed Enclosure Performance: Pre-Calculated Results

Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters and their recommended sealed volumes, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff. Volumes are net internal per the IDMAX Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.

The IDMAX15 has high Qts values (0.952 D2, 1.022 D4), producing elevated Qtc in sealed enclosures. This means a strong midbass lift and impactful character rather than a flat Butterworth response. Despite this, the 30 Hz Fs and large Vas combine to push F3 down to the upper 20s to low 30s across the recommended volume range. The ported Audiophile alignment at 4.0 cu ft reaches F3 at 27 Hz. This is a maximum-output driver with genuine deep extension.

Power handling and ported options: Sealed power handling decreases as volume increases: 1000W at 1.5 cu ft, 900W at 2.0 cu ft, 800W at 3.0 cu ft. The IDMAX15 ported Audiophile alignment at 4.0 cu ft tuned to 27 Hz reaches F3 at 27 Hz. The high sealed Qtc values are normal for this high-Qts driver and produce strong midbass impact and presence in large vehicle cabins. Port dimensions for each ported alignment are in the IDMAX Series V.4 manual. Run your own numbers in the Sealed Box Calculator.

The Enclosures tab above lists enclosures available for large-format drivers. The IDMAX15 requires a custom or purpose-built enclosure in most installations; contact Audio Intensity before ordering for fitment guidance.
